Just read about Benni McCarthy going to Blackburn.

Disappointed about that one mates. I'd have liked him here as back-up to Berbs, but maybe he wouldn't want to be warming the bench most of the time.

Good player though, very good signing for Blackburn.

That's the trouble with getting a good back-up striker I guess. We'll probably have to buy a young player or perhaps Barney is good enough. I've seen scant of him play to be honest. Looks good, but would he be good enough to fill in if Berb gets injured?

Or does think he's got the Keane Defoe partnership licked, if it is called upon to really deliver, with Barney as back-up if two strikers are injured?

Pekhart is a big lad and could probably fill in for Berbs if it was needed. We also got Dixon who's been playing really well in preseason for the stiffs I think he's played 90 minutes of football altogether and scored 3 goals. Then there's Barnard who looked really lively at the end of last season in the few appearances he made.

All in all I think them 3 younguns can hold down fourth spot, Dawkins and Barcham have both also looked good for the stiffs so I wouldn't worry about our stikers especially when you add Berbatov, Keane, & Defoe to all them youngsters. We need a LW or 2 and competition at RB plus maybe an old hand at CB to fill the Naybet/Bungy role in training.

we've had plenty of time to fill in the fourth striker role, i'm not sure we've seen enough of barney in matches to know he can make the grade. with possibly our biggest season in years, we can't afford to take chances. it concerns me that barney never did well out on loan. hopefully we can have a look at martins today. i would expect another big striker to come in if we're going to get one, seeing as we bought rasiak and nearly carlton cole.

Very good point. I forgot about the Czech and Dixon. Between them and Barney one at least should be good cover this season. They reckon those two youngsters could be superstars. Jol said that Pekhart could do a Rooney, even this year, and Dixon (at 16) was in the last Ireland squad. Staunton basically saw him play and thought he was so good he named him in the senior squad!

had a look on the uefa site and pekhart wasn't mentioned in the czech squad, i guess as he's so young he didn't make the team.

have to agree with this. I think we suffered in the run in last season not having suitable cover for mido when he got injured. don't think we should make the same mistake this season. it's probably a hard roll to fill as any half decent striker is going to want to figure in the starting 11 quite often.
