I was just wondering what my fellow yids think truthfully about defoe,i think he will be banging goals in all over the place this season if hes given the chance, this could be his best season for us COYS

We had a long debate about this on my thread 'what I think Jol should do...'. You might find it interesting.

yeah i think this season will be the Defoe show. however i wouldnt say he's my favourite spurs player, he's very lazy and greedy which the greed partly makes him the goalscorer he is but id hate to in a team with him as he's not a team player but still an excellent goalscorer when given the opportunity

He's a little ****ing machine!!!! I like to examine different attackers' styles, and his is dynamic.

highlander
27th July 2006, 04:06 PM
yes he is dynamic when he has the ball but otherwise he rarely chases it or gets back to try and win the ball a la keane for example

That's another good point I never even mentioned in my post. I've already said all I'm going to say on what I think about him. However, if he stays I really hope he plays a blinder this season.

In terms of strikers Defoe is young. His best years are before him.

He's a player who's game is entirely down to his state of mind. He seems focussed and excited about his future at Tottenham at the moment, and his pre-season form reflects that. I see this being a massive season for him.

Sorry bud cant agree with that, he (JD) set up a good many chances last season thru chasing lost causes to the touchlines and winning challenges , then breaking free and either having a crack himself or setting up someone else.

hes the dogs bollox., i love him and his attitude, id want him to be pissed off if hes not playing, this season he'll channel that attitude to huge success. If he'd have been in all last season wed have 4th place

he's a good player but him and Mido didn't click like Keane and Mido did so I very much doubt we would've got 4th or even 5th place if we had of dropped Keane

highlander
27th July 2006, 07:33 PM
last season was keano's, he was imply undropable, i think this season will be Defoe's but Keane will still chip in with his usual 15ish goal haul. from the pre-seaon stuff it appears the Defoe-Berbie duo is looking very productive.

Keanoldinho
27th July 2006, 07:36 PM
:D It was either drop Keane or drop Defoe as Mido was a shoe in. Keane and Defoe upfront blows hot and cold so I wasn't putting words in your post just reading between the lines.

I think Defoe has looked class this pre-season though and hope he has a big season this year I also like him alot and think he's got bags of potential.

In regards to my name I made it up after he scored that Ronaldinho-esque goal against Blackburn were he flicked the ball up over a couple of players heads like the great Brazilian does alot. It in no way implies that I like Keano more than Defoe, they're actually evenly adorded by me and both fan bloody tastic in their own right.

Actually I take back my agreement with that. You're right about that, he did some good chasing last year. But I stand by everything else I've said about him.

And in my view if we played all of last season with Defoe and Mido (who were not working at all) and Keano on the bench we'd have struggled to get Uefa cup and we'd now be facing the disaster of losing Keano.

I disagree with you there JJ. In my opinion it's not that simple, I wish it was. That would be easy to fix... one would just have to tell him to buck up or ship out. Unfortunetely, I think it's a lot more complicated than that.

Why don't we quit debating about what we SHOULD have done last season, can you really complain with BMJ's selections given our current position (i.e. we're in fu**ing Europe for the first time in donkeys!)

Defoe does seem to have bucked up his ideas (though it's only pre-season) and so should be given a chance alongside Berby to start the season. Personally I don't think we should start games with those two and Keane. It's a hard choice and it must surely be tough to keep so many good players happy if they're not playing but a strong squad is essential. Fingers crossed we can keep them all happy!

i agree with this guy. i want to see defoe in the starting line up. yes i know keane had a blinder last season, yes he tracks back and picks the ball up blahdy blahdy blah but havent we got midfielders for that? we want a player who sticks em in left right and centre and defoe is more than capable of that. keane is not

Are you sure it's not your blatant dislike for Defoe that's preventing you from seeing the obvious? That he's shit hot, and going to rip defences apart this season. During this pre-season no player has impressed me more, ont only through his scoring but his attitude and the interviews he has given.

with defoe its all about man management..he's got the ability to be a top notch finisher..and line between success and failure as a striker is thin one.everyone said he'd leave us if he didn't play..well he's still here and looking sharp pre season..martin jol is a good manager he could go down as one of the best..lets hope so...defoe needs to feel wanted and an arm round his shoulder now and again..but also a firm one...jol knows this..jd will have a good year this year

I don't have a blatent dislike for Defoe, it's nothing personal if that's what you mean. I'm not blinded, I've been watching for a year and a half hoping I'd see what I think he is lacking and it never came.

Pre-season is pre-season, it's the land of getting fit and not getting injured. It doesn't mean much to anyone except that.

I wanna see if he's becoming a top man in the prem, which Keano already is. To drop him, in my view, would be a mistake. Keano is part of the package, to me, that can take us up a level.

I've been watching Keane since he made his debut for Ireland against Argentina at the age of 17, where he was sensational. He has a very similar international scoring record to Owen, which many seem to forget.

This guy is the real deal, he's finally starting to really realise his huge potential, and all you can talk about is ****ing Defoe. So sorry if I pipe on about it quite a bit, but I feel strongly on this issue, and its importance to the spurs progression.

Not that that has anything to do with it!!!

I don't dislike Keane, if I could select Berbatov Keane and Defoe every game then I sure as hell would!!! Keane is one of my favourite players, you really get the sense he loves this club, and the skill he possess is ****ing brilliant to watch. Remember that goal against Blackburn last season???

Yes, I am Irish, but that's nothing to do with it. I completely disregard passport when assessing players. The same thing I do when assessing spurs players with regard to non-spurs players.

I once said to my mates, 'Even if Ireland won the world cup, and cam home and did an open top bus parade, I'd still throw bottles at Gary Breen'.

Why McCarthy insisted on continuing to pick him I'll never know.

I reckon they're about even now. It's taken more time for Keane's talent to emerge than Duff. A lot of us over here were grunting about Duff until he turned 22 and burst into life, because Duff was unreal as a youngster but then kinda lost it for a while. He wasn't in the Irish team for a few years, and it was in the balance, a lot of people felt, whether he'd fulfil his early promise at all.

Keane has always been a special talent (and always got goals), but it wasn't focused or something. He was a bit of a diamond in the rough. I always said if he got a top class manager day in day out and regular first team football he'd tidy up the loose ends and fulfil his enormous potential. He was progressing nicely with Strachen, but after that he went backwards a bit.

Now, in my opinion, we are belatedly seeing a player turning into world class. And I want it to continue!

Hmmm, never heard that analogy before, like it. Anyone who doesn't watch Robbie week in week out would think we were either mad or incredibly biased to draw such comparisons, we know better.

choda
28th July 2006, 04:44 PM
Yes. I agree.

When I watch players, I always look to see how they do at the higher levels or in big games. When a very good player plays really well or even raises his game to the occasion in one of those games, I always think, 'Ya he's special'.
To me that's the acid test, 'the how good are you really test'.

Recent ones I can remember are Messi at Chelsea, and Rooney taking to international football like he had been playing it all his life.

Back in 2002, Keano was being derided somewhat going into the world cup. He'd been incredibly on the bench at Leeds all season, and people were wondering if had been overated as a youngster. I was a keen observer of how he'd take to the big stage because I saw that something in him as a player. But it was a big test.

We know what happened: Somehow despite match fitness he was raising his game to that level. I remember one particular moment when he solo'd the ball up against Camaroon and crashed it against the post, I thought to myself, 'Yup this boy has got it'. He and Duff were a night of mary for anyone they came up against.

Defoe is very much a confidence striker (as are a lot of forwards) I don't think he will consistently score 20 a season. He may score 30 one year and 8 the next, whereas I think you can just about bank on Keane to knock in 15 plus every season. When Defoe is "on", there's none more dealy in front of goal. I think Keano being named captain of Ireland has done him the world of good. Having both these guys in our squad is fantastic for our club & I hope than can push each other to goals aplenty, consequently (with the help of Berbs etc ) pushing THFC into the Champions League.
