View Full Version : Why did you start supporting Spurs

I was 9 or so.
I was just about to walk infront of a car.
This bloke in a Holsten classic shirt grabbed my jacket shoulder and pulled me back.....he said "steady on there lad you nearly got yourself killed"
I felt a bit embarressed and my mates were watching from the other side so I just said ..."Yeah whatever" ...or something ungratefull like that.
Shortly afterwards we (our class) were given a box full of car window wagglers (not sure what they were called really) Plastic shirts with numbers and players names ...that had a sucker on the back so you could stick em on a car window and they would rock back and forth.
By the time I got to the box there were not many liverpool and the other top teams left. Loads of spurs tho.....as spurs were relegated the previous season.
I picked spurs as soon as I saw the same design on the plastic shirt ......as the guy who stopped me from running infront of the car.
When I look back ........even tho at the time I didnt thank him.
He was quite right ...that car was going at some speed .....it prob would have killed me tbh.
Had a special bond with spurs......and to this day Ive still never seen the bloke again.

I had no choice. i was born into a family of mad Spurs fans. And I'm glad to say my two sons have followed in the family tradition.

It's been in my family for exactly 5 generations. My nan told me that in the days of her grandad you either supported Tottenham or Arsenal if you lived in London. Luckily He chose Tottenham and continued it through the family. I was not forced to support Spurs, as a kid around 6-8, whenever people asked me what team I supported, I naturally just said Tottenham.
Thats quite a sweet little story gusintheuk2

When I was say 9 ?
I went along to some football trials that my mates dad was doing for his team , and my mates dad had convinced me that at my for my age I seemed like a decent height for a goalkeeper , but we were playing on astro and I only had short sleeve shirt and he said
"If you wanna be a real keeper you gotta be mad , dive and jump to get the ball , I aint having you go home to your mum and dad with astro cuts all over your body , here stick this on " and handed me a tottenham goalkeeper shirt with the old style padding and extra thick long sleeves , so I stuck it on and went inbetween the sticks. Needless to say I did quite well in goal , even though I was a chubby bastard.
I saved a penalty and did quite well according to my mates dad . So ever since then I've supported Spurs and bought their shirts and for every year I could ALWAYS bought a Goalkeeper kit if I liked the design to continue the theme.
Cheesy as **** eh?

I was about 8 and everyone in my town of 4000 people supported either man utd or liverpool, throw in a few gay scum fans.(this was before chelsea got taken over and finally got a fan base outside of london:001_rolleyes:
So anyway i said fvck it and put in the 6 next best teams other than the sky four. Spurs, villa, leeds, cant remember the rest, and out popped spurs. To this day i am one of only two spurs fans in the town. I got really into football then and loved the spurs style of play and stuck with them ever since! Top that:001_smile:

My parents were members of a religous cult in the 60s, the cult only believed in the old testament and the Jewish version of god. The cult followed all Jewish feasts and teachings, eg. no eating of pig, only animals with a cloven hoof and those that chewed the cud, only fishes that had fins and scales were permitted to be eaten. They went to church on Saturday, no Christmas or birthdays were allowed to be celebrated. We were told the church was the only true church in the world and at the second coming (1972 to be exact) we would be taken off to Petra and saved from the end of the world. The church had a hand in all aspects of our lives, including which football teams were acceptable to support.
Yes, you guessed it, Tottenham were the chosen team, probably, and I never had this confirmed, because of the Yid Connection. I was five years old. Though the connection with the church is long gone in our family, we are, and always will be Yids. As the old saying goes, you can change your wife (or religion) but not your football team. Naturally this formative stage sees me now as a religion hating atheist.
A strange but true story.

My dad wasnt a footy fan at all so.....
Everyone was a LFC or Manc fan where i grew up...and i wasnt interested in either of them...My next door neighbour was a Spurs fan and had tons of Spurs vid's.
I was about 8 at the time. So it was 1980.
I watched the fcuking lot of them........most had Jennings, Hoddle, Perryman, Ardiles,Villa, Gilzean and Chivers in them.
And i was hooked forever.

I was 8 yrs old and my elder half irish brothers brought my other bro a spurs top and he didnt really want it. instead i started wearing it as i knew i didnt wanna support manu or liverpool! Spurs seemed an exciting team that had their ups and downs so i was in!
since then ive never looked back. being from Preston and everyone supporting mancs and scousers i've lived with constant abuse through schooling but stuck by them.
No1 has a right to ever call me a glory supporter or an untrue fan! Im spurs through and through even though ive lived in preston most my life :001_smile:

Because Spurs runs deep in my family, my Dad was a huge Spurs fan, and my Uncle actually played for the Youth side around the time Chris Hughton was playing for them.
My Dad started taking my to games when i was 7, i think the first one was Tottenham v Everton in 91 and it finished 3-3. Still remember walking out and seeing the pitch for the first time and thinking wow!

too young too remember, but probably just because my dad supports them, my brother was man utd (although he no longer watches football or any sport really) and he tried to convert me but i stood strong and true to the spurs.
my mum tried giving me his utd 'hand me down' shirts aswell but i always refused to wear them  my dad didnt like her doing it either. lol.
he never pushed us just let us do wat we want really, my other brother liked blackburn for a bit, when they won the league sad ****, but he was still a spurs supporter.
i stayed true though, never liked anyother team always loved spurs and allways will

I was originally a Palace fan (coming from Croydon, what do you expect?) up untill the age of around 8 or 9.
Me Dad (who is also a Spurs fan) and I watched a random Spurs match on the telly (cant remember what game though) and I was hooked. Fell in love with the team, the fans, the atmosphere and the style of play. Even though we were the medeocre dull drab team of the mid 90's, for some reason I just loved um.
Plus it was a good reason to spend some time with my Dad shouting at the telly/ at WHL so quite frankly I was set for life!!!!!

Born in Finchley... born into the blue + lillywhite side of the family... my grandad had 2 brother's, one was Arse... the other was QPR...they all had 5 kids or more... mainly boys... the family get togethers used to be interesting as once the beer started flowing so did the verbals... luckily.. my Grandad was 6ft 8 and had hands the size of buckets, and his brothers were both 5ft'rs.... as you can imagine it was normally the Yid side of the family that won any aggressive stand offs !!!

I had to think about this for a while......
I suppose it started when i was 6 going 7 in 66 when everyone got a TV to watch the world cup. From then on i would be glued to the TV watch MoD and the Big Match but as yet did not have a fav team.
The following may the old man was talking to the guy next door over the fence. The neighbour was a staunch chavski fan and he asked me who would win the Cup final. Spurs or Chelsea. I didn't like him much so i said Spurs and had great fun taunting him after the game.
Then at school we had a friday afternoon quiz in class. There were 4 teams Man U Arse Spurs & Leeds. I was in the Leeds team & on saturday afternoons i noticed that they were there or there abouts in the League so i adopted them as my team.
Very early 70's i tried to get to as many games in London as i could.I went to Goonville ( which i hated from the moment i stepped inside the place), Stamford Bridge, Upton Park and a very very long bus ride to Selhurst park. Some how i missed WHL :crying: .
Having the right accent meant that i could mingle with the home fans and provided i didn't cheer when Leeds scored (a lesson i learned very quickly) i could get to see my hero's.
But it didn't feel right. I dont know why. It just didn't. I wanted to go more often and not just London games but my parents were having none of me going to Leeds every other saturday.
We'd moved house by then and the new neighbours were Spurs fans and one day i overheard them talking about going to Spurs the next day and i asked them if i could go as well. They said yes and after i'd cleared it with my parents ( it was a midweek game and i had school) i was all set.
We got the bus to the Angel Edmonton and walked to the ground from there. Once inside WHL i spent the 1st half standing in the Paxton just looking round the ground. The atmosphere was nothing i'd experienced before. I was awe struck. It felt right.
I dont remember much about the game. I know it was against Vitoria Sutebul in the UEFA cup and i think spurs won 1-0. ( i'll have to look it up)
I wanted to go again and the next Spurs game i could get to was against Norwich. I wanted to see what WHL looked like in the daylight and would it be the same experience.
It was and i was hooked. I was home.
