Martin Petrov was the best LW in the Bundesliga. The Wolfsburg fans dubbed him "The Football God". He scored some of the most brilliant goals in the Bundesliga, once he scored 4 in one match. 2005 he moved to Athletico Madrid for 6 mill pounds. He did not live to the expectations, since Athletico bosses thought that he was like Hristo Stoichkov. Although there are some striking similarities between them (outstanding pace, great aggressivity, spectacular runs), they are very different players: Stoichkov was a great goalscorer, whereas Petrov is great at making assists. His last season was bad in terms of a goalscorer (only 1), but he made more assists than Ronaldinho - 10. By the way, Athl. M. beat Barca twice; 2:1 H and 3:1 A. Both times Petrov was the man of the match.

He is among the best friends of Berbie and nearly half of the latter's international goals are due to Petrov's assists...

I rate Petrov too and it would be a good solution as he both play left wing and striker(I think)... He's got plenty of pace and got a wonderfull left foot... But does anyone know if he's available?? I don't see us paying more then 3-5mill. for him...

think that we can buy him for 4 mill. Fiorentina's 3 mill bid was rejected. (The bid was made before their relegation)

The only problem is that the new manager of Athl. M. wants Petrov to stay, insisting that he is among the best LW in Europe...So, I'm not pretty sure about his actual transfer price...

Yup I am so dissapointed we should have offered more, for the guys that dont know here is the news so far.

Damien Duff was tonight on the brink of a transfer from Chelsea to Newcastle.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland winger was undergoing a medical, after which the transfer will be completed.

A statement on the club website, nufc.co.uk, declared: "The board of Newcastle United PLC are pleased to announce that contracts have been exchanged with Chelsea Football Club for the transfer of Damien Duff.

"The player, having agreed terms, is currently undergoing a medical."

Newcastle will be delighted to have won the race for Duff, who was also wanted by Tottenham.

A left-sided player, he came to prominence at Blackburn and was a £17million signing by Chelsea in 2003.

However, Chelsea's squad strengthening meant Duff's place could come under threat next season - with Michael Ballack's signing adding to the competition for places.

Chelsea were unwilling to sell Duff to Tottenham for £7million but declared themselves ready to offload the wide man at the right price.

I can't wait to hear Duffs reasons for signing for the comedy club, because there is nothing he can say, in footballing terms, to justify it.

Personally I think he was in it for the money, pfffft and that's lame imo, he would have been more succesful at white hart lane.

maybe he'll fail the medical and we'll all have a good laugh.

Is the world going mad? What the **** is going on? Duff to Newcastle... hmm... okay.

All I can say is there are three possible explanations: Spurs wouldn't match the Chelsea fee, Chelsea wouldn't accept any spurs or liverpool bid (especially when Newcastle came in), or Duff's a little greedy ****.

If it's spurs fault I'm a bit pissed at them, that they wouldn't spend 10 million. He's worth it.

If Duffs making this crazy decision (I outlined all the reasons that make spurs the choice for him before) because he won't accept the same wages as his bet mate Keano (and equal in ability), then he's a greedy ****ing git and I've lost a lot of respect for him.

i dont know why he went there, he has probably been promised 1st team football but they have Emre, Dyer, Milner and N'Zogbia who can play wide left. he will probably play more centrally. i very much doubt it was over money, if it was why would he leave the club owned by the richest man in the land

ALL about the money mate. Money and sitting on bench (with one year left) or money (long new contract) and playing every week were the options between Newcastle and Chelsea. The footballing choice was clearly spurs or liverpool, for a slight wage cut, because most players at Chelsea are on inflated wages. But he went to Newcastle because they would give him the inflated wages for another four years (or whatever he's signed for).

But we have to wait to see if it was his decision, if so then it was all about the money.

perhaps Duff fears that here he would be in the shadow of Keano???

That's it in the nut shell. He went to newcastle because they'd pay his crazy wages and even though Spurs are a better team and he'd fit in alot better he decided to chase the money and I'm not mad at him. Truth be told I'm glad he didn't come now because we don't need players who jump ship to the highest bidder.

I say the same about Carrick if he wants more money he can go to manure because we've got a wage structure here and it's helped us become very secure financially.

Remember The Great Bill Nic

"Any player coming to Spurs whether he's a big signing or just a ground staff boy must be dedicated to the game and to the club. He must be prepared to work at his game. He must never be satisfied with his last performance, and he must hate losing."

You know what, to be blunt '**** him'. We are a different club now, if people don't want to play for us, we don't need them.

Gone are the days where we were languishing mid-table and I would get frustrated when players wouldn't join us.

He is forgotten, and I look forward to enjoying a season watching him fail.
