it seems od everyone went for the story, and nobody has denied a bid, not even duff has said i want to stay. Sounds like the stories of a bid are true but i wouldn't pay over 10m.

if he comes then obviously i will support him but at this point we are talking about a chelsea cast off - an injury prone player a la anderton - a john hartson/david platt in transfer fees etc etc. if we want to sign a chelsea player and make waves go for robben.

There's a report saying that we put in a cheeky bid of 5 million which was rejected and that we are doubling our bid to 10 million. There's a breaking news item saying that Duff, after arriving at Stamford Bridge was called away in a hurry and did not train. So there could be something about to happen.

Duff will shine at spurs if we sign him. He stymied at Chelsea (so are Robben and SWP). Players like him are allowed to flourish at the lane. Wingers need your team to open out and play football, we always do that. Watch him rediscover his world class best at the lane. Born to play for spurs. Duff and Lennon would terrorise opposing defences. It'd be magic.

I agree with Choda. Let's not forget the final season Duff had at Blackburn, when he was white hot every week, and had Ferguson sniffing round him like a puppy on heat. I think he would be a great signing, and entirely in keeping with Spurs' reputation for tricky wingers and attacking football. My only question is Duff's willingness to leave and Chelsea's to let him go - I suspect this all might be a little flirt before contract renegotiation, with Spurs being played like the proverbial cheap guitar......hope I am wrong

True, but at least he's not saying he can be happy or rot in the reserves. I think this is a great statement for us. It means now that nothing is standing in our way. We have to be major favourites now to land him as chelsea won't sell to Man U and the Duff, I doubt, will want to go abroad.

i cant believe duff would choose newcastle over spurs unless he wasnt happy in london so i hope this is bollox. i wasnt initially in favour of having him but the idea has really started to grow on me now .
also following supposed comments from mourinhio that robben was going nowhere he was 100% a chelsea player and wouldnt listen to offers , this has got to signal to duff that he is always going to be second string at chelsea

just because Duff has been linked to other clubs doesnt mean he will eject spurs for more money or CL football, look at Zokora & Berbie.
Duff just wants to play and we can promise him that, we pay decent wages, we have a MASSIVE irish connection and it means Duff will be able to stay in London

Really this could be a blessing in disguise as I really do not think we should risk 10 or 11 million on an injury-prone player whose approching 28. 6 million seems to be more reasonable if we see him giving us 2-3 years service. The money is best invested in a younger player.

Duff is apparently talking to Liverpool as well as us and the Barcodes. As far as I am concerned he will only demonstrate his ambition by joining us.
A move to Liverpool would grant him Champions League football, however he would face stiff competition for his place as Liverpool already have as many left sided players as we have central midfielders. Clearly any move to the Toon would be purely motivated by finance.
So to conclude (despite being ever so slightly biased ;)) if we do sign him then Duff will have demonstrated a willingness to make sacrifices in order to futher his career. should he sign for either of the other team one would have to seriously question his motives.

Houlier has said that he does not want to sell him. I'm not sure he's the right man for us anyway. For a start he's more a support striker than anything else and secondly Lyon want in excess of £4 million for him. He has played roughly 15 first team games and has only scored two goals for them, lightweight!
If we are going for a player like Ben Arfa then Babel of Ajax or Farfan of PSV would be a much better acquisition and both are more than capable of playing wide left or up front.
Billywhizz
21st July 2006, 03:36 PM
Barca have been sniffing around Babel along with AC milan, Fiorentina. anyway Ajax say they are not intrested in selling him but i do agree with you on babel. so if Babel ain't available and Houlier not looking to offload Ben Arfa
leaves Farfan who recently turned down Portsmouth, could do a job on the left we would be a different proposition than Portsmouth, how much would you bid for him.
spurs61
21st July 2006, 03:45 PM
That's an interesting question. For me Farfan is one of the brightest young talents in world football but I don't think anyone quite knows where his best position is. I've seen him play up front, left wing, right wing, support striker etc. I think we would have to offer at least £7.5 million to be in with a chance of getting him however I think £10 milion would be over-priced.
I can't see Babel going anywhere other than England or Germany though, he' not going to get into Barca's team, Fiori gave been relegated and Milan can't offer European football. Surely worth a punt?
England's No.1
21st July 2006, 03:49 PM
Milan can't offer European football.
Last I heard Milan were gonna be allowed into the UEFA cup as the other Italian team that were entitiled to it after the Italian judgement did not have a UEFA license (because they had been fighting relegation all season, so did not think they would need one) and it is now to late for them to get one.
And I'm fuming at the thought of Milan being allowed into the UEFA Cup, how much do you wanna bet we draw them in the first round.
Chinaman
21st July 2006, 03:51 PM
I also like Babel as he'll also solve the 4th striker problem. I can't see us playing 2 out and out wingers all the time, so 2 1/2 wingers in Lennon, Routledge and Babel, and 3 1/2 strikers in Barbie, Keano, Defoe and Babel should see everybody getting enough games to keep sharp. In real emergency, we can still use Ziegler up the left wing and Jenas on the right.

Quote from Commoli: "We know what we want, but I also know Martin feels it is key to only bring in players who really want to be part of what he is building here.”
Could this be a hidden message about Duff???
Shuggie13
21st July 2006, 04:35 PM
The way I see it, as pointed out in other posts, if Duff goes to Newcastle then it's going to be purely for the money. On that basis it will be a blessing in disguise as Danishspurs pointed out with Commoli's quote:
Quote from Commoli: "We know what we want, but I also know Martin feels it is key to only bring in players who really want to be part of what he is building here.”
I couldn't agree more. Join us because we have a young exciting team going places, if you don't get that principle join perrenial underchievers Newcastle.
I also read an interesting interview with Frank Sinatra Mourinho today in the Evening Standard. He was backtracking on his '2 men for every position principle' and looking to cut the squad using players that could excel at multiple positions. Using this principle Babel or Farfan would both be astute signings judging from others posts about their capabilities.

yer i'm glad about duff. i liked him as a player but the value was questionable. if he goes to newcastle it's great because he'll get injured and miss half the season. I wouldn't have paid more than 7m for him. It's a lousy move for newcastle as they have a good left winger, and only two strikers and i'm including luque in that.

I may be biased on this, but why would anyone take Newcastle over Spurs. He could stay in London, play along side an international teamate and play for one of the most promising sides in the premiership. Some footballers are idiotic. No one should be guaranteed a starting roll, that has to be earned. Thank god those days seem to be over at Spurs when we had to put up with under achievers playing week in - week out.

His move to Newcastle is ALL about the money. Money and sitting on bench (with one year left) or money (long new contract) and playing every week were the options between Newcastle and Chelsea. The footballing choice was clearly spurs or possibly liverpool, for a slight wage cut, because most players at Chelsea are on inflated wages. But he went to Newcastle because they would give him the inflated wages for another four years (or whatever he's signed for).
He'd have played at spurs too, we don't have a left winger. We've only got fatty and a youngster. Hell, even if he moved up to Liverpool he'd probably played ahead of Kewell, Zenden and Gonzalez. But there would be a LOT of competition and moving city. That's why it all pointed to spurs as the footballing choice!
But we have to wait to see if it was his decision, if so then it was all about the money.

To be honest I'm not really bothered if we do not sign him, I said weeks ago when people were asking who we should sign as a left-winger that I did not want him, In my eyes he is injury prone and a selfish player and if he does go to N/castle good riddance.
