This has to be a wind-up?! I'm not doubting that Bent is a good player but he's only played one season in the top league and he's not proven himself. To those who say he scored a fair few last season and was called up to the national side I would point out that so was Michael Ricketts.

There is no denying that Bent has the potential to be a good player and goalscorer but to part with over £10 mil for a player who has only spent one season in the top flight and only cost £2.5 mil a year ago seems a bit wasteful to me. Berbatov is a proven European goalscorer therefore his price tag is justified, in what way is Bent a £10 mil footballer?

that's the british market for you. you have to look beyond and wonder where the next young british striker is coming from. there is nothing left in the u-21's so bent might be a good buy for the future, especially if it helps both him and defoe get in the england squad. Charlton will fleece us tho but we might have carricks money to use. I think if you're going to spend that kind of money he's got to be more than fourth striker. Would still like us to go for lua lua who can play wide also and would be much cheaper.

i doubt that story is true.

£16 Million, not in this lifetime.

spurs61
12th July 2006, 10:21 AM
i doubt that story is true.

Don't be so sure. I understand that we have been talking to Bent/Charlton for sometime and that Bent does n't want to stay now that Curbs has left, he feels Dowie isn't the man to further his career.

WelshSpur82
12th July 2006, 10:37 AM
But can you honestly see us paying anywhere near £16 Million for him. I was not saying that we are not after him, i just dont see us paying anywhere near double figures for him, as he is not going to be first choice for us.

shoot_ffs

maybe we are just fishing and hoping to farm murphy and maybe routy out for a reduced fee. charlton chairman saying he'll def be playing for them next year.

spurs61
12th July 2006, 10:54 AM
I totally agree, it would be insane to pay any more that £7-8 mil for Bent. I just don't see the justification , especially as Johnson has been signed for £8 mil and he is very similar in style and goalscoring potential, if anything he is a better player as he brings his team mates into the game.

Welsh Spur

**** that....Bent hasn't even played for a big team.....£10Million is twice what I'd pay for him!!!!

I've seen £16M quoted.....are people ****ing stupid or something?!?!?

shoot_ffs
12th July 2006, 12:42 PM
it's no worse than us asking 20m for carrick. besides with newcastle on the look out for a big striker they may get close to 16m for him.

suBerb

David Villia who was bought by Valencia for £6Million scored 24 goals in Primera Division...

For £16Million we can buy a world class striker!

WelshSpur82

i agree, for what is being quoted we could get far better than Darren Bent FFS

David Villa, for example. Awesome.

Welsh Spur

It's because of teams like Newcastle that the market is crazy....they continually waste millions every summer, and obviously teams are doing their best to take them to the cleaners...

Absolutely crazy money, 6-7mill possibly, it also depends what formation MJ plays next season......4-4-2......4-5-1......4-3-3?

He's not worth half what's being quoted..

WelshSpur82
12th July 2006, 02:23 PM
cant blame them. but yes i agree Villa or for that money why not wait and see what happens with the italian teams, could get a bargain. Ibrahimovic / gillardino / Trezeuget / Toni etc. what do you think ?

shoot_ffs
12th July 2006, 02:24 PM
i think we'll get another big striker, that was why we bought rasaik in case mido got injured, so if that was his thinking then, expect somebody big to come in.

i'd be happy with roaming fourth striker or someone who can play wide. It's important that jol recognised how much better we played, or perhaps how much more offensive we were, towards the end of last season without mido. We have a good passing team and are probably harder to play against when using them. another wide man will really help. but one big man in the squad is a bit light.

Of those I wouldn't mind Trezeguet, always rated him, and superb at club level.

Also Toni had a decent WC, only heard of him few months before due to how prolific he was last season. So I wouldn't be gutted about that.

£16million for bent is crazy. i dont rate him at all and wouldnt pay more than £4million for him. we dont even need him. it wont happen

SurreySpur

He proved last season that he could score goals in the prem, even though he was playing for charlton. He's be a good addition to our squad but not for the money being mentioned, £8 - £9million would be reasonable.

England's No.1

I rate Darren Bent, and definately think he should have been at the World Cup but...

If we keep Defoe (which I hope we do) AND sign Bent, then we are going to have 4 top quality strikers, how hard is it going to be for Jol to keep them all happy, I'd rather see Barnard have the 4th striker role, and save our money for a quality left-winger (PLEASE be Duff!)

Bent and Nolan that is..

If him comin means Jermain going, then he can stay put.

According to Marca, Real M. will sign RVN for 10 mill pounds.

Bent is much younger than RVN but also by far not the same class.

Defoe is superb, one of my favourite current players.

Also read that United will demand at least £15M for RVN as Shevchenko went for £30M and is older.

Confirmation:

But according to Spanish daily Marca, a move to La Liga now looks likely for the out-of-favour Manchester United hitman.

The paper says van Nistelrooy has almost agreed personal terms with Real and says the transfer fee - if United agree to the deal - could be 15million Euros (around £11million).

Chinaman
13th July 2006, 01:47 PM
I really don't think Bent is worth any more than 10million. But would rather Defoe stays. If he wants to go, we'll have to sell him at more than whatever we have to pay for Bent for he is a better player.

You put it nice and simple, yet very true. It's a pity Iain Dowie probably isn't reading. He's probably hiding from Simon Jordan's lawyers.
