Very funny and painfully true.

This guy is just being a bit of a cynical tw*t for the vast majority of the article, which I find is a frustratingly common trait in people who write about football for the Times.
Electronic advertising boards? What a ridiculous thing to get annoyed about. Technical areas? Squad bloody numbers? Club shops? Club websites? Slow news day apparently.

I am not going to cast assumption about your age, but you may not remember the days or watched football when these were non-existent. A lot of the points are more asking what the hell they add to the game.
Numbers about SSN and numbers 1 & 2 are spot on. The article is also clearly tongue in cheek and not cynacism. I do not find the writers on the Times cynical especially Samuels and Gabriele Marcotti, who is a very interesting read.

ive only read the intro and that was absolutely spot on, these youngsters dont know what they missed
"Football is one of the greatest things in the world but it’s not perfect. It used to be perfect. Before money and television and the Bosman ruling and Baby Bentleys and roastings and tattoos and takeovers and no standing and agents and prawn sandwiches and rotation. "
bring back the 70s and 80s, toss out SKY and the EPL, make it where players had loyalty to the club and shirt and you couldnt go out on a Saturday night during season cos youd be a) hoarse and b) a bit battered and bruised and c) lost somewhere in an away town!

You will appreciate then.....
35. Sky Sports News
The television station that thinks John Carew’s ingrowing toenail responding to treatment is breaking news. Is Sky Sports News the greatest invention known to man or a drug more addictive than crack? We’ll be back after the break.
30. Match Of The Day
Used to be the best programme on TV. Now, it’s the best football highlights show on TV on Saturday nights.
11. Kick-off times
Football used to be played at three o’clock on a Saturday afternoon. Now it’s played when it suits Sky and Setanta.

yeh read it all now, hes spot on.
football now days sucks big time, so does going to a game (home and away) and watching it on TV.
Id like TV to offer the option of just the atmosphere with no commentary (tho at Arsenal and Man U that would be dull!)

But don't you think he's complained about some truly ridiculous things? The one that really got me was "Opinions" F*cking hell. A journalist telling us the 50 worst things about modern football includes opinions while he tells us what he thinks? If it wasn't for opinions he wouldn't have a job! Did people not have opinions twenty years ago when football was perfect and mindless thugs were allowed to kick the most skilful players all across the park?

And I think Martin Samuel has gone to the Daily Mail, and thank god. I was pretty sick of his incessant Wenger/Arsenal bumming, his sarcasm and cynicism towards Spurs, and his vendetta against Platini.
(Clearly I don't choose what paper gets bought in my house, I just read the back 5 or 6 pages of whatever is on the table  )

I think so eventually. Because the number of games shown rises every year, eventually there will be nowhere to go but to show 100% of games. The eyes of the Scudamore and chairmen (except maybe Gibson, Whelan and Lerner) would light up with $$$$$$$$$. I reckon they'll be shown in 3D too.

The revenue would not be worth it. How many millions of world-wide viewers do you think are going to watch Bolton vs Wigan?
There would not be anything in it for the EPL and Sky/Sentanta airing every match. The diehard fans would be delighted by why make them happy?

As I said a few posts back some of it was written firmly with his tongue in cheek. I do agree with the sentiment though. We are fortunate here that we have a group of people, with opposing views at times, but are articulate and knowledgeable about football.
These last 15 years or so everyone has an opinion on football. Then you have the people who jumped on the bandwagon who had never followed who now have opinions. The example he gave of the radio phone-in was a perfect example.
