sepp blatter says

Sepp Blatter slammed the standard of refereeing at the finals.

He said: “When a coach complains to me shirt-pulling earned his player a yellow card one night and nothing for his team’s group rivals the next, how am I supposed to respond?

“There are tackles from behind I’ve seen go unpunished and violent conduct that has escaped sanction, not to mention serious errors in applying the rules.

“If we want better matches, we need better referees as well.”

yet he kicks out the Russian who totally followed FIFAs guidelines in Holland v Portugal , he booked every bookable offence just as FIFA state the refs should do, yet due to the players of both teams being rather silly on the day, the ref gets sent home for probably following the FIFA guidelines better than any other ref in the tournament.

have to wonder does Sepp really know what hes on about????

yer i didn't think the russian ref was that bad, all the players were messing about and some of the tackles were awful. If he's leniant with some it's said he got them wrong and his whole performance is slated. Booking figo when he didn't see it was wrong tho. Nice to see big head poll get his marching orders. He is rubbish.

You are never going to please everyone but I think refereeing should get stricter. The players all complain when someone else time wastes, dives or puts in a cynical tackle but when they do it the referee should 'show his discretion'. Its bollocks.
Players are used to getting away with flaunting the rules which is why when referees start enforcing them so many of them get in trouble and then whine about it. I think it is the right way forward, let it settle down for 6 months and once players realise they are not going to get away with it we will start seeing better , free flowing games, with more players left on the pitch.
Saying that , am I the only one who actually enjoys seeing loads of players booked and sent off?

It's the World cup, it's to be expected, ther's always loads of sendings off and booking because the style of play is different as it's a knockout competition! As the tournament progresses there's always more cards (i.e last group game and knockout stages) The Portugal V Holland game wouldn't have been so crazy if it was the 1st group game, the reason it was so bad is because they both knew it would be difficult as either team could have won it and both sides (Portugal mainly) lost their heads bigtime.

And I can't excuse Poll for not giving pens and booking Simunic 3 times but again, the players made it a nightmare of a game to referee. This is why we need pro refs, who know how to handle these situations. And no Yiddo, the sendings off are great. I love them. :)

Sepp Blater is an absolute ****, he knows nothing about football and has done nothing to help the progression of the game and clamp down on important things in the game i.e. the racism in spain etc. it doesnt help the refereeing situation when FIFA get ref's from all over the world to represent the footballing world when it clearly doesnt work as the standard of football in some parts of the world are far worse as is the standard of the ref's. the CL final was proof of this. get more refs from the better league's. what happened top common sense refereeing

Make refs pro. simple. Make it a job where they train for it everyday and learn how to deal with the new problems in football (these days it's diving and disallowed goals) whatever they may be, referees should be as appropriatey prepared as possible for every signle game, there is too much at stake these days due to the obscene amounts of money being pumped ionto football that every decision made has to be the correct one.

But doesn't that take away from the fun...? Part of football is that the refs sometimes get it wrong. When that Mendes 'goal' went in, I knew it was a goal. But in those seconds afterward when I realised he didn't give it my heart sank. These are the emotions that football gives out, I believe that ref's getting things wrong, despite being pissed off with them sometimes, is part of the enjoyment of football.

I look back at that Mendes moment and laugh nowadays.

Yes, I'm not sayin that the amount of money in footy is a good thing, I totally agree with you, money is what will kill football.

be nice if more ex players became refs, like cricket with umpires and rugby too, thing is the players dont respect the refs at all and get away with it. Until that stops theres not much future , if a player swears at a ref (badlly as in agressive personal) they should be red carded , theyve gotta learn respect even if the ref gets it wrong, does the ref rip the piss out of a player who misses a penalty, no yet a ref gets a decision wrong and the players give him both barrels.
Collina was the only one who had any respect so why dont they all model the refs on him

The problem with being a ref is that every decision they make 50% of the players think it's wrong, and it does not help when ******s like Wenger and Ferguson disagree with every decision against their teams.

But as one can't be certain about what to get from Poll, if he's given the Final, he might just get everything right.

cant stand sepp blatter , complete cockshandy , he gives these refs mandates to follow and then doesnt back them up .
the sooner he is thrown out (along with most of his piss taking cronies ) the cleaner and the better world football will be .
even if he is not involved (i doubt )he surely cannot be unaware of all the corruption at the top echelons of the game .

sorry to deviate from the refs but it and him are really two of the main things that piss me off in football .

There too many people involved in football that don't have the game's best interests in their actions. Blatter is more concerned with getting the audiences in rather than making sure the tournament is played fairly and correctly...Imagine the viewing figures for the Portugal/Holland and Croatia/Aussie matches....job done there mate, two matches they've succeeded in royally ****ing up.
