The debate will rage on as to why with the quality england players we have we always do poorly in major tournaments..but lets face it although the prem is arguably the most exciting league the top clubs..top 3..never play more than 2 or 3 english players..the rest are foreign imports so an english team isnt competing in top euro competitions.I hope spurs stick to their young english policy ,not just for our future but for englands to.The top sides like argentina, brazil, holland, spain, portugal etc do ok and look more cohesive cos their players play in the top leagues and domestically..playing different tempos and styles...our top players play in the prem..which is always high tempo but doesn't give em the skill to challenge at international level..

That is the root of the problem. Spot on mate. It's an unfortunate situation but I don't see it changing. Thing is, the players who make the England squad are held in such high regard by the footballing public and the media that their prices are staggering, causing the top clubs to pay lower fees for foreign players of equal (not always) quality.

Well Lescott joining Everton for 5mil says it all, far far too much for a player of that calibre.
Cameron Jerome for 3mil...
Andy Reid for 4mil some might say.
Dawson at 4mil was a snip, as was Lennon at 1mil - great pieces of business.

Part of the answer to the inflated prices for home country players is the dearth of local talent. If talented players are as many as in say Brazil, they would have cost less. Simply supply and demand.

i think its a good idea that the FA impose this core of english players, where clubs must have at least a certain amount (dont know how many) home-grown players in their squad. the problem has arrised from doemstic football becoming too rich. it means they donw want to spend money so go for foreign players who may not be better than the english players, but as they are cheaper, the top clubs (excluding us) wont spend the money on developing young english players. and the players themselves will go to where the money is rather than where they want to play. this is why scottish football has become so terrible and the national team rarely make it to the big tournaments.

I think Uefa is imposing this but will be phased in.

I also think that the introduction of having 7 players on the bench like the rest of the world would help out national team.
If your winning with twenty minutes to go you can afford to give a young English prospect a go, the one you put on the bench for such a situation.
