I might support Derby if our midfield two are Jenas and Zokora.
In fact I might support Derby is either of them play.
How much am I looking forward to this game!?!?!
Two home defeats in a row. Three defeats in a row.
Losing will result in Jol's head. Time to bring in Ramos if this occurs. In fact I think i'd accept Sven or Stevie Mac if we lose to Derby, and make it three in a row.
He's really pissed me off lately Jol. The way he sends us out. The players he plays. The set-piece problem. The left-wing problem. The my mates taking the piss out of me problem. And the thing's he says. Like the way we play to Jenas' beat! What a knob.
2-0 Derby. And a walk in the park.
Team to look like this:
---------Robbo-------
Chim-Rocha-Gardner-Stalts
Jenas-Zokora-THudd-Steed
------Bent---Keane
Shocking.

well guys and girls, we're only two points behind Man U and theyre still gonna be challenging for the title at the end of the season and have looked clueless too in the first couple of games in relation to their normal performances.
Cerny (how many more chances is i cant dominate my box Robbo gonna get)
Chimbo, Stalts, Gardiner ,Rocha (much better left back than Stalts)
JJ Tainio Hudd Taarbaat
Bent Defoe
not sure if KPB is fit yet????? but hed be first sub if so , Robbo, Keane, Zokora, any fit defender we have .
Hudds in cos hes the only player who plays it into Defoes feet as Defoe likes it best.

My old man said play Stalteri and Gardner in the middle together as well! It's just absolutely crazy! Two players who are shocking with the ball at their feet. One can't even header whilst both can't actually mark! I can imagine it now - "to me, to you, to me, to you, ah shit we've lost it, damn they've scored."
I think i'd rather acually play the chuckle brothers.

MATE I love tottenham, went to my 1st match in the 70s, wat realy makes me hurt is they have all had a pre season and none of them look fit and ready, you know chomping to get goin, at kick off, look at sunderland and everton, how do u think derby are gona be, surely not casual like our lads, preperation is everything. and we begining to look like we cant cope in this league, we stil got the big 4 teams to play, plus the fighting teams, plus the teams with europe on their minds, AGAINST DERBY ID HAVE TO PLAY THE HUDD, and i dont know why we havent adressed his mobility problems in preseason, bet if he went to everton when they tried to buy him he wud be starting and looking match trim,

Well chaps i'm off to soak up some florida sun for a couple of weeks. Get away from what has been a dreadful summer and more importantly a dreadful start to our season. I was so looking forward to proudly wearing my spurs related apparel. I think i'll wait till we pick up a bit... and i'm certainly not showing my colours at manc airport (I'm bound to run into some cockahoop M.shitty/Everton fans somewhere).
Obviously gonna keep tabs on what the boys are doing and keep telling myself that it's can only get better. If its just as bad when i get back i might take up watching either Northampton or Rushden.:o Both are not far from me. If it's that bad i may opt just to stay in florida

That's not quite right about Ghaly. What he said was that he didn't want to do running as he was carrying an injury. The the quote 'we didn't do this at Tottenham' came from Ghaly being made to take part in the second of a double session.

Hudd's a very big, broad player and you can't change his physique. If he was carrying excess fat he could tone up and lose it, and you can give him a programme to improve reflexes etc, but what you're suggesting is akin to starving him, which is how you lose muscle tissue.

Not really i mean im no personal fitness assistant in weight training but he's probably doing more weights and less reps when it should be less weight and more reps (i think) then he'd be more toned and less bulky

It is vital, that Jol's wiling to experiment with the midfield (logical experimenting, that doesn't mean putting Keano on the wing), and give some of our younger players a start like Big Tome and Tarrabat.
Also he must start with 2 proper wingers, drop Gardener ( a reserve could do a better job even), Staltieri just can't defend so you might as well replace him with Iffil, he can't do a worse job.
As long as he does this, we should beat Derby by 1 or 2 goals.
Our player stamina and work rate is poor, on top that we have players getting injured easily.
So i'd sack the ****ing nutritionists, trainers and physios, and get some decent ones in. Without a good backroom staff, a club can go nowhere.

If we did have Lennon and Taarabt playing... That would certainly make the game exciting, they're stamina is brilliant... but Lennons injured... and I've got a positive feeling he's gonna play Taarabt...

i'd put cerny in goal and ghaly in midfield i don't think he would get a good reception but it should be character building for him if he wants to stay.Quite honestly i couldn't care less about him throwing his shirt away after going on as sub and then being subbed i may have done the same i think its time we got on with it and moved forward cos he's a better option in midfield than i've seen so far
jrio
17th August 2007, 02:09 PM
i'd put...ghaly in midfield
There might be a time to do that but tomorrow isn't it because the crowd would immediately target him. If Jol selects a midfield of Tainio/Zokora/JJ/Mal he's almost putting a noose around his head. He needs to be bold right from the start to ensure he's got maximum crowd backing. Thus Taraabt and Routledge on the wings would state our intentions right from the start and give us some momentum.
cal
17th August 2007, 02:28 PM
you could be right, but i think the game against man u was instrumental for ypl because the crowd were on his back for in effect conceding a goal albeit momentarily, then the more tolerant of us in the stands started to cheer his every touch,he,in my opinion, came back stronger and better from that moment on.I am kind of hoping the same would be applicable to ghaly and maybe some fans that boo might actually try and encourage him after seeing the negativity they are trying to promote is not helpful and not entertained by their peers.pack-mentality may prevail of course but i would like to think in favour of ghaly rather against him
jrio
17th August 2007, 02:40 PM
You're referring to Lee's gift to Park 2 seasons ago? I think I was mentally booing him for nearly a year after that. Lee didn't show any substantial improvement until last February when he looked stronger, less easy to shrug off the ball and stopped dollying in crosses with his right foot.
Ghaly's situation is very different. Lee didn't really look up to coping with the Prem whilst Ghaly always looked to be capable, if a bit erratic, but the shirt throwing is the issue. If Jol picks him at this stage it looks like potentially snubbing the fans, many of whom see the shirt incident as a red rag to a bull. We need the whole crowd "on message" on Saturday, especially with Gardner in the centre yet again(!)
cal
17th August 2007, 02:46 PM
yeah i was refering to that which qualifies my point that he doesn't go down as easily now
i don't see the problem with ghaly's shirt throwing incident perhaps i have more understanding of his frustration than most .Ghaly can do a job for us in midfield and i believe he should be allowed to show his mettle
jrio
17th August 2007, 03:00 PM
I'm totally with you on Ghaly, but many fans regard it as heresy, including some on this board, and they wouldn't be advocating the use of the comfy chairs. He's still available for transfer and I'm not sure Jol wants him to figure in his plans for this season, short of almost every other option on the right being injured. Still, potentially could be the biggest comeback since Elvis in '68.
proto
17th August 2007, 03:01 PM
i too think ghaly can still provide somthing for us, shirt toss Vs teeth loss makes him about even in my book. i mean who the **** isn't gonna get angry and more to the point, embarressed, coming on as a sub and being subbed off 15 min later. it would been nice if he'd been all "Oh sorry guys, i'm having an absolute shocker! please take me off for the sake of the team quick!" but thats that. he didn't think in the moment and made about the dumbest jesture he could have. thats how i see it and if he can come back and provide some of the asists he did last season and get a bit better too. bring him back....
but not on saturday and not at WHL, Jrio is absolutly right. you have to remember Lee has a completely different mentality to ghaly. i don't think ghaly could win the haters over, the hate would crush any game hes got, we already know these egyptians are sensitive flowers without the love the expect. if hes still needed like hes needed now, bring him back away, everyone loves the idea of being a hero, Jol could dangle that carrot for him in an away game, he could do the biz, play a blinder or score some goals. then he could turn it around at home, he'd still have to do it there too i think, but he'd be given the chance at least i think.
... holy shit, that sounds like a fooking movie script or storyline. but theres gonna be more swearing than in most fairy tales LOL.

I'm paying to see that movie! Get started on the script, proto. Everyone loves a tale of redemption. From what Jol said I think Boateng is pencilled in as back-up for Lennon on the right, and we've already seen Tainio, Keane and Routledge there. One thing that particularly impressed me about Ghaly was how he always looked to, and mostly did, find Berb with a telling pass. Even when taken off against Blackburn he never stopped wanting the ball and trying to make an incisive pass, albeit failing badly.

Disagree on Elvis, as Lennon said (John not Aaron) "Elvis died when he joined the army", to paraphrase the Times today, befoe the army Elvis was a symbol of the true rock n' roll spirit, the establishment wanted him to crash and burn, after the army he was a spangly lounge suit wearing, drug taking, Las Vegas basedentertainer, rather than the cutting edge symbol he previosuly was. Right, pretty munted as I write this so it may not all make sense.
Clearly we've got to win this one; so MJ to start with five at the back and one up front!:p
Obviously the ususal 4-4-2, (even though we don't have the players available to play it) with Robbo in gaol (you read that right) and a back four of Chimb, Gard, Rocha and Rolly Polly Lee. Naturally Jenas will start in midfield, he's very good off the ball you see:confused: , with his mate Didier backing him up......oh bollocks who cares as long as we win, surely we'll win against Derby??!! **Thinks back to last Saturday and worries**

He wont go anywhere, but you cant expect him to be dancing around after just one result, he'll need to win a few more before he's completely clear again, but to the fans he is completely clear after that performance, no doubt about it, we're back on form and he just has to prove to all the board now that we're back on form, after a few more matches, starting with a result against United! but hey I could be completely wrong and maybe he just didnt wanna smile because of the last few matches? lets wait and see when he gives the post match interviews and stuff, i'm pretty sure he's 99/100% safe now though, we just had a little blip at the start of the season and now we're back on form, the players love Jol and so do the fans, so he'll stay as long as he keeps doing well, and hey maybe we'll even beat United at old trafford!, what a dream result that would be huh ;) :D
But anyway it was a great performance, 3-0 up after 14 mins, not much more you can ask for than that :D, and Taarabt does look pure class, and he's only 18! so it's scary to think how good he'll be in a year or two's time, scary for the opposition that is, haha :D

I know Derby are one of the smaller teams in the Prem, but you can only beat what's infront of you.
Excellent performace by the boys, everyone in the team was working hard for once and our passing and movement was too much for Derby to handle, and the goals were excellent.
Big Tom was pulling the strings in midfield, which was good to see and Tarrabat showed why we've been raving on about him, running rings around the Derby players.
A much needed 3 points gained, a big confidence boost and a much better goal difference now.
Jenas had a great game but that still doesn't change my opinion of him, statistically out of thirty something games your bound to have a few goood games.

He cant win can he! He has a good game and its "statistically bound to happen" and he has a bad game and he's the worst player ever, not worthy of pulling on a spurs shirt. Why cant u leave it at "Jenas had a great game" Its a new season and a new year dont be so pessimistic.....

For those who wanted Martin Jol sacked need their head examined, listening to Talksport now and one stupid Spurs fan wanted him to be sacked despite our win 2day!!
He just needed to improve his tactics (which he did today), the meeting with the chairman seemed to motivate him, and for the first time this season the players were willing to work hard and actually do some running.

i think we can conclude from that derby will finish bottom this year. they really seemed to have no plan or cohesion, and we totally bossed the midfield.
thought hudds was the real difference in our performance today, giving us time and changes in play rather than static passes to nearest players. wonder whether zokora was dropped/rested or injured??
i know i'll get panned for dissing jol today but he's realised we need some width, and this is exactly how we should have played at sunderland.
the second thing is, why did we drop off and take it easy. we don't have another game for a week, it's the perfect opportunity to try and progress our attacking and link up play. In a week when everybody can see parts of our play failing, he still doesn't show a positive or forward thinking attitude. i really have a problem with jol sometimes. what is he trying to achieve if he's not committed to improving us in every way possible.

Good solid performance against a very poor team that will finish bottom. Really happy to see Lee back in at LB, Hudd starting, and a very good performance from Rocha (who has impressed me greatly.) Also good to finally let Taarabt run wild on the left!!! My only worry, is that it has taken 250 minutes of football for any of our strikers to score?
EDIT: I forgot to mention Jenas... fantastic goal, that had it been scored by Fabregas et al, it would be in the papers tomorrow as the greatest goal ever in the world. Ever.

**** sake we won 4-0 and it coulda been 10-0 with the chances we created and the 3 penalty shouts we had. He got Taarabt on for 25 minutes and got the tactics spot on. We were still all over them in the 2nd half we just slowed the tempo down abit because we were winning 3-0 the last thing we needed was to pick up another key injury because we're bombing up and down the field when we don't need to be.

good points well made, i didnt notice Rocha and that for me shows how good he was and i always like him anyway.
JJ well that was his best for us to date, more to come next week too if he lines up in that midfield or better . Keane was left on for too long, not his fault but it just wasnt happening for him today and he should have been subbed for JD maybe even at halftime but thats not a gripe . Adel yep start him v Man U for sure, hell keep there right side busy and Scholes is bound to foul him at least enough for one red card.
Well done Mal too done great then faded but job done by then .
In truth we could have had a pen and Waynes goal WAS good so 6-0 wouldnt have flattered us at all

I only saw the highlights today, even thought the match was on Irish tv.
As soon as I saw the team I had a better feeling. A geniune winger on the pitch, one on the bench and a passer in the centre in Hudd. Bent and Keane up top, it sounded much better.
Yes, I thought my favourite Berba was pathetic against Everton, even for the ball he got. At least you know these two will give their all. Berba needs to be dropped when a rocket in the ass is required. We can do that now with Bent.
I don't care what anyone says, getting our tactics correct feeds it's way down to your team spirit and ethic too. The players knew they would win today, it must have looked right to them too. And of course they had the setup to make it happen.
So fair play to Mj, but you have to wonder why he didn't see this in the first two games.
As for Jenas, please, please play like this every week. Last week was the single worst performance I've ever seen from central midfielder that cost more than 5 million. Quite a turn around, but he has to deliver most of the time.
I must say Cl probably depends on this guy being what he could be. Apparently a nice lad but I still feel he could well be the death of Martin Jol. He's putting so much faith and responsibility on the shoulders of a lad that has so far failed.
Yes, last year he scored 7 goals and impressed the hell out of me at times with his pace and stamina, but the rest of his game was abject and mostly pathetic. How do you quantify his lack of presence, lethargy on the ball, poor delivery and passing. It must have cost us close to 20 team goals indirectly.
But here's to how he played today and hopefully he will finally be the player we all know he can be.
As for the front two, they looked mightily impressive. Can you imagine being a centre half and knowing you are going to face Bent and Keane? Nightmare.
Bent will never stop running and he will drag you all over the place, and he's so quick and powerful he must be so hard to live with. And Keane will test your wits all day. He will pick your pocket, show you one way and go in behind you or go short, drag you out, and he just seems to know where to go where the ball will arrive. He's a terrific player, he really is. Today his link play and movement was sensational. He was finding positions all day. It's just a pity he was having a day where he couldn't finish his dinner. If he was off the mark he'd have probably gotten 3 or 4 today.
JD deserved to come on, because it wasn't happening for Keano.
I'm not a total Defoe hater, you know, I just feel that like Jenas even though he scores goals over the past years (although not as many for spurs as Keane and not as many as Bent or Berba for their last clubs) his team play (link play, decisions and movement) has been so poor that it has cost us many goals (and I don't just mean up top) when he played. It is also about quality possession and parterships.
That's not to say he doesn't deserve chances as a fourth man, he is top finisher and mid to bottom teams in the prem would rightfully love to have him.
Phew, I couldn't even think about spurs all week, it was that bad. I would have gotten depressed if I had, but it's much better now, isn't it?
I still feel the season will hinge on MJ's tactics (not putting out teams with no wingers, dropping Jenas if he isn't good enough etc.), Jenas himself, possibly Boeteng and wingers. There are no hiding places for Martin Jol anymore, as he found out this week. He has had time and money to develop this team, and he got A LOT of money this summer. He has to deliver now.
I think the signings were all excellent ones, but as we said at the time: yes, they are great signings, but only if he gets the midfield to be what it needs to be too. I still think another big winger is possibly needed, even this year, and he needs to be less reluctant to give the youngsters their head.
And I fear if he doesn't get it right that we could drop down places, because the other teams below us are better this year. Newcastle, Man City, Everton are all looking strong.

^^^ That was well said my friend and a excellent thread to read !

Just a special mention for Lee who when he 1st arrived i totally thought was shit in fact up to half way through last season BUT something happened to him last season and i thought he was one of our best players and yesterday he was fantastic considering how little footie he's played VERY IMPRESSED and im not afraid to say i was wrong.
Rocha has done the same as Lee and im glad we've got him a player who can play well across the back is valuable!
Finally Taarabt will be our Ginola if not better when finally tuned because he got a bit excited when a easy pass was on BUT he's what spurs fans love and i love him too he's gonna be a monster this season for us i feel it.

So far i've only seen the goals.
All you can say is its yet more proof that Jenas has the talent, and yet more proof he doesn't use it enough. Great goal. Didn't like that arrogant celebration though.
Can someone clear something up too, when Steed scored his first did he run over to MJ or over to Zokora?
And well done to DB23, not the greatest of goals but he's off the mark at least!

Zokora dived off the bench and all the players ran to Jol and the players on the bench, Zokora was ahead of Jol so malbranque ran to him to celebrate, then they all went to Jol and celebrated some more and Jol gave some of them a pat on the back and stuff, and a word in some of there ears etc :D , and Jenas's celebration wasnt really arrogant, it was classy, he knew what he just did was good haha :D

It was Mal running to Zokora and pointing, followed by the others who wanted to celebrate the goal. Jol is standing on the touchline nearby and nearer to the players as you can see Mal continuing on past him and pointing at Zokora, who gets up with a beaming smile on his face. Somebody suggested that the free-kick might have been his idea, or it's a private joke, or perhaps Mal had told Zokora he was going to score today. As they're both French speakers, probably one of the latter 2.

Might be going OTT but have a gut feeling that we will win 4-0 today, hopefully without "shirt thrower" Ghaly, the sooner we get rid of him the better. COYS............
Congratulations on a good prediction mate lol

I was going to do my usual review of th egame, but I just read Choda's novella of a post and honestly can't think of much else to add without repeating it. Other than I was impressed with Routledge, he grew into the game and I think he should start every game until lennon returns. In fact, I'd start Routledge on the left when Lennon returns, I really think he can be a key player for us at last.
I'll also say that I think Defoe has earned a start. For all Keano's running and finding of space, he had a bad day & his finishing was abysmal for some odd reason ( maybe the pressure got to him). But JD just looked a sharper to me. So for Man U (dare I say it?) start JD with Bent.
And am I the only one who found Taarabts debut both hysterical & embarrasing. Okay the guy had boundless energy and was skinning everyone left right and centre, but he just seemed to be running around like a loony and then blasting the ball into the stratosphere! I thought Keane/Bent/Routledge were going to strangle him at one point! Although JJ looked relieved; "at last, someone more wasteful than me." Let's hope he just calms down and plays with some composure & judgement next time cos he looks like he has talent.
Anyway, 4-0 is a massive morale booster, I hope the rumours about Jol are untrue, as I still feel he's got what it takes. He's learning along with the players and he should be given a season. Okay we were playing Derby, who are clearly the worst team in the league, and I feel JJ's game may have been so good because there was no real competition for him. Let's see how he fares against his old buddies Carrick and Hargreaves on Saturday, then I'll really judge him. But nice goal!

No, you weren't the only one. He'll have to stop the ridiculous showboating if he wants a career with us.
I was happy with the performance. Routledge was excellent, and his attitude pleased me as he'd have every right to not give a shit about us. I'm all for him starting from now on until Lennon's return.
Jenas had one of them games where you just love him, he needs to perform like that every week. Tommy was very good, he's a much better starter than a sub. Rocha was commanding in defence and Gardner was acceptable.
BUT Derby were truly dire, the rest of the league now only have to worry about two relegation places as Derby will go down.

That was my thinking. I can just see players like Gerrard/Essien flattening him for that.
he's only 18 though. Plenty of time to calm himself & learn some teamplay.

He's just eager to impress, dont be so boring and hard on the guy, he's 18 and he wants to look and play amazing, i'm sure everyone who plays football felt like that at one point ;) :p

Its even more boring to see a player that doesn't know how to pass.
Didn't matter when 4 up...would matter if we were chasing a game.

No contest, he'll absolutely dominate the pitch. Mainly because Carrick and Hargreaves won't be on it as it's a Sunday game. ;)

Are we on the telly again? Blimey, you can tell we're top 5 now, because Sky are trying to kiss our arse by putting us on the telly all the time. That or they just want to keep putting Man U on until they win. (Better not be against us:confused: )
I can just see Jenas running around an empty pitch pretending he's playing and going "Yay, I'm ace!" :D

JJ was so good against Derby because he wasn't having to drop back and do all Zokora's work for him. JJ is the one that gets constantly slated but seriously for all Zokoras running about has anyone ever seen him make a decent tackle, decent pass, set up a goal, hit a shot on target??!?!!?
Jenas is capable of being a bit sloppy at times, but the guy clearly also has alot of talent and i have no doubt he will be our top scoring midfielder again this season.

Err... yeah, ton's of tackles, blocks, 50/50's etc. He plays as a DM, and he does a great job there. He's not a creative player, but then that's what Jenas is supposedly for.

Never said he wasn't. He has bags of ability. Just uses them all too fleetingly.

A key factor was that, much to my surprise, Derby allowed us so much time and space. Under those conditions we never fail to impress. That won't be happening next Sunday.
Huddlestone has many similarities to Carrick and that's a set of qualities that works fairly well with JJ. Zokora looks impressive running the ball out of our half, pretty much like Gardner from defence, but what does he actually contribute? I'm alarmed that his shooting is so dismal and that he still goes down so easily.

Just wanted to echo Wayne's post about Lee.
He was sensational on Saturday, I just can't get over the vast improvement in his performances, from catastrophic to faultless in a few months. And it looks like he passed on whatever he has been taking to Jenas on Saturday. On this showing we need to give thought to playing Lee at left back and pushing Bale into midfield (I know it's been said before but it does now look viable).
I honestly believe that the improvement we saw in the side was down to the inclusion of Big Tom. His visioon and peerless passing ability and the fact he sits deeper than Zokora allowed Jenas and Steed to push on and also provided an insurance policy for the marauding Chimbonda. He is also the only player other than Keane who can pick out Bents' runs diown the chanels and into the box, some of his dink balls on Saturday were nothing short of outstanding.
Am I the only one who thinks that Routledge jsut isn't ggod enough? He improved the balance of the side immesurable but his general play was poor and lacking in intelligence, I don't recall a single decent cross into the box despite being one one one with the full back on a number of occasions. That said, until Lennon is fit he has to play merely to give balance to the side.

I think Routledge did put some decent balls in, and he looked threatening down the flanks.

I saw one, if a bit overhit, but his threat of pace made a difference. Amazingly I saw him rated at 9 in one analysis, possibly in the Mirror.

He was good, but sensational might be pushing it a little, Derby posed very little threat especially down their right side. if he does the same at OT then maybe we'll call him sensational!!

Ahh, we're back to the old chestnut of beating what is in front of you!
One other thing I noticed about Tom was his improved mobility, he looks far better bale to get around the pitch and looks like he's lost some bulk. Of course it might be that wearing all white makes you look slimmer!

Quite possibly yes, you are. I thought he started gingerly, as anyone would having been essentially treated as an unwanted commodity this last two years, but really grew into the game and his role. I thought he provided us with drive, pace and crossing, which wasn't bad at all actually, something we have lacked so far. I'd like him to start in lennon's absence.

No, 8 or 9 would be about right, most of the press singled out Jenas as the outstanding perfromer but would he have the same freedom without Tom sitting behind him, I don't think so.
