wouldnt suprise me if it happened, id like him to stay but at the moment i wouldnt be too bothered if he left as long as we got a good price for him

So Barney would be the reserve with Hammy, Pekart and Dixon all lining up as the 4th man?

if defoe did go we would need to invest in a replacement, probably an older striker who's experience can rub off on barney, hammy and all the youngsters. someone like John Carew or Flippo Inzaghi

Yes mate indeed it is.

I don't want John Carew's clumsiness rubbing off our precious youngsters. Inzaghi's awareness around goal would be nice, but don't think it will come to pass.

having heard jol say that lennon could play in the hole behind the strikers, i wondered if that meant defoe would go, as that's pretty much where he's picking the ball up for us. I think he's a fantastic striker, the goal against west ham for example, but he's just too small to lead the line. I think his intelligence and all round play is great, and he's one of the few strikers that scares the crap out of defenders. I think with a left winger he'll get his goals next year no problem. On the other hand maybe he wants to go, he has after all missed out on the world cup squad. The bad news is i think he'll do brilliantly at liverpool as they play a kind of breaking style, and as their other strikers are totally shit, he'll play most weeks.
So if we are selling it's because he's not the style we want, so we could be getting a bruiser like martins or zigic, carew, even kuyt who i don't rate for the money. If not that then pace like anelka or bent. Then there's ruud lol. Defoe is likely to be the most linked player in the uk this window. Hope he stays personally.

Not sure how long is left on JD's contract but if its more than 12 months we gotta stick out for £15m minimum in todays crazy top players market.
Then why dont we go all out for Tevez and take a gamble on Freddie Eastwood before he gets going in the championship and his price rises accordingly, or am i dreaming ................................................
highlander
16th May 2006, 07:04 PM
defoe has either 3 or 4 years left on his contract. tevez is a no, i dont rate him at all but the south american game is bloody slow and terrible to watch. Eastwood would be a gamble, possibly too much of a gamble, i think id rather take a gamble on lee trundle even though he's older hes very strong and looks like he could easily adapt. possibly Prestons Dave Nuggent??

What Jol said about Lennon playing in the hole was simply a praise to him, saying he was a great talent and that he could play either wings and in the future he would be able to play in the hole as well...

do you guys think this has been on the cards since Benitez' comments regarding JD in January?
it did seem to me that defoe seemed somewhat disinterested during the run in?

He did look that way.

I don't think he was disinterested .... he just didn't want it once jol benched him.
Everything i read seems to say berbatov is as good as signed and from what i've seen he'll do!!! Personally I can't wait to see the back of defoe ever since the match when he came on fell over in the box , didn't get a penalty , huffed a bit , then did a harry kewell and got off as quick as he could.( can't remember the oppositon).
Besides anyone who can't score alongside robbie keane , carrick , lennon and jenas isn't good enough if we want to progress.

when talking about players in the hole i'm just thinking that that's pretty much what chelsea do, so it works. defoe could do it as well, so it comes down to whether we want the money to rebuild other areas of the squad.

defoe is lazy at the best of times but when he's not even interested it makes it even worse but i think if he stays he'll have a great season next season.

It bugs me because Robbie Keane was such a model proffesional and Jol was as fair as he could have been. He basically said to both if you want to play show me some results which is how it should be with a deep squad of players. I think Robbie shamed Defoe into not bitching about not starting but must have been resentfull nonetheless. I do not understand why JD didn't pull out all the stops when he got to start during the run in. Especially as it's a world cup year. He did nobody including himself any favours.
I would still like to see him play for England this summer though and Spurs next season.

We are not a selling club. We don't need to sell. Common sense tells me that Defoe going will get us quite a bit of cash - cash that will be spent to improve the squad greatly.
Besides this, I see no point in Defoe going to Liverpool because they play a style most definately not suited to his own.

 Big mistake if we let Defoe go he will come back and make us pay, he is a 20 goal a season player he just has to get back to playing his natural game. He is a goalscorer and should be left to play to his strenghts.

i think its more a question of if the player wants to stay rather than needing cash. He is going to have to deal with being a squad player where ever he is.
I hope he realizes that and wants to stay.

someone just said that he is a qualit goalscorer and were not a selling club so dont need to sell him and if we do he will make us pay. i totally agree, even though we'd get a good price and he may want to leave, liverpool are the only club who would buy him but i dont think he'll want to go there. he should definately stay

I agree we don't need to sell, but if he wants to go, there's very little Jol can do about it.

I was watching a rerun of the Inter vs Cagliari match that took place this weekend and Cagliari have this 26yr old Honduras player called Suazo who has scored 26 goals in the Seria A this season in their shity little team that is a big accomplishment in fact in any team it is.
The guy is fast as hell and strong plus he's not a midget like Defoe and could probably be bought for a good price seeing as Cagliari are not the richest of clubs. He would be a great replacement for Defoe.

Have to say, I'm bordering on indifference when it comes to Defoe. I think he's a great asset to any team, but if he has made up his mind that he wants to pursue his game elsewhere then fair enough. He's a classa ct, but we only want players who want to play for us.
I have a feeling that Keano and Berbatov are going to be devestating next season, with or without JD breathing down their necks.
However, if he is moving to get games he is making a foolish move. Liverpool have a rotation system like any other top five club. if you want to be a striker playing week in, week out with no threats, you have to drop down a standard. Quality strikers accept that this is the way it is... With a bit of luck, so will Jermaine and stay and fight for a place...

agreed down to the player if he wants to fight for his place and tbh it will be the same at any top side
except maybe liverpool in my opinion. outside fowler who i dont think will be a regular , i dont see them with an out and out goal poacher yet , i see the others there all as guys to produce for someone like defoe . morientes was meant to be that finisher but he has been a let down .

no thanks, glad we didn't shell out mega mills for him the seaosn before, he looks well outpaced by it all. Considering the money we spent on berby i think that will be it for strikers this window. We have 3 quality with 2 back up, and if we play 2 proper wingers we could play one in the hole rather than two up front, a position that could also be filled by a midfielder. Why didn't they say how long the berby deal was for??

yeah but they said the same about keano, they obviously have some set up that allows options for every eventuality, and if it's looking iffy after 2 years we'll flog him. Could be the new lineker.

The way Levy strikes deals, I think we're not yet offering him mega wages. So it is likely that his wages will be reviewed and after a year. If he comes good, then perhaps he'll be offered an enhanced 4-year deal.

that'd make sense, if he doesn't work out i wouldn't want him lingering on the books, how long was rebrov left going mouldy?
bah i'm not trying to sound negative, i've got a really good feeling about the new dude but it'd be good if we're learning from the past too.
