It's rumoured that Spurs are going after SWP. If this is true, imagine how dangerous of a squad we would be. SWP on the left and Lennon on the right. SWP can play either position while Lennon mostly right but with more experience, Lennon will be able to play both. The question remains if SWP would want to join Spurs, since all the big sharks will want him too. What do you guys think?

I can't see it happening but you never know. I think we need a left footed LW like Downing or someone similar

I know it sounds too good to be true. However it's good to Know Spurs are going after some quality players this summer.

Another session of us being linked with everyone who looks available' and even those who dont. It seems to be a press conspiracy to undermine the club and makes us a laughing stock. Our only target this summer is Ronaldiniho!

he's a great player but i'm not sure we'd get much benefit out of him. Surely routledge isn't much different. Ok swp has proven he can score goals but routy has only had one season on a relegated side so he deserves his chance. I don't think swp is worth say 7m more than routy.
It could be that we haven't been able to find a good enough lefty and will settle for a right footed player in lennon. Most of the dutch wingers that have been linked to us have been right footed so why spend the money. Lennon may also be used in the hole as jol said so maybe we could accomodate another winger. Could probably get downing for 10m anyway.

I'd welcome him...Imagine that, Lennon/Carrick/Jenas/SWP, shit hot midfield.

lol bit of both to be honest,, not being horrid to you, but theyd be great going forwards but maybe lacking a bit in the ball winning stakes me thinks.

Yeah, I know what you're sayin...There's no 'Vieira or Keane' type player there, but I think Jenas or Carrick could become that kind of player, Makelele and Lampard at Chelsea compliment each other perfectly, maybe we could see Carrick acting as the ball winner and supplier and Jenas as the box-to-box player.

SWP is a quality player and i dont think he'd turn down a move to spurs but id rather have Duff, or just a left footer down the left.
Welsh Spur
16th May 2006, 02:21 PM
Yeah, I would like to see Duff and Keane playing for Spurs together but with SWP we would have the potential to supply Englands entire future midfield! And Duff is too injury prone, while SWP looked electric in 04/05...

Neither of them has the muscle of Makelele. Jenas and Carrick are essentially hustlers rather than tackler.
One reason why we tend to lose late goals is that apart when Davids is on top form, our midfield do not win enough of the ball with one tackle. We tend to double or treble team the opponent on the ball resulting in our midfielders doing much more running that way. So in the last 15 minutes or so, they're found wanting when they can't continue to double team or they can't make good use of the ball when in possession and thus subjecting the defense to continuous pressure.

Of the Chelsea contingent of SWP, Robben, Duff and Joe Cole, my preference would be Robben. Stick him on the left and leave Lennon where he is best, on the right. If we get SWP, we'll have to switch Lennon onto his weaker foot. Alternatively, get Cole and give him a free advance role and to drift out left when needed.

Robben is without a doubt one of the world's top performers on his day, but I can't condone the way he plays, he'd be a disgrace to the Spurs shirt.

The way a player plays is a reflection of the manager. As Moo Rhino is a cheat, most of his players cheat to please him. And I'm suspicious whethet he encourages cheating in his players.
Diving is an art in Germany, and Klinsmann was a star diver before he came, but he was all gentleman while at Spurs. So I have hopes for Robben to mend his ways should he come over.
Welsh Spur
16th May 2006, 02:58 PM
Mourinho uses these 'cheating' tactics largely due to where he's from, Portugal and Spain even teach players how to dive, like a part of their weekly training schedule. 2PM How to dive - advanced level. :D

I would welcome Robben in a heartbeat, however he coming to WHL will be impossible. I think SWP is more realistic or even Duff but Robben i can't see it happening.

Mourinho said today, when he was confroted with Chelski linked with Simao, that one of there 4 wingers were to leave... Wonder which one of them it could be? and whether they were to join us..

i have a feeling it could be Joe Cole, even though he is their best winger and their best player behind terry & lampard, i dont think Mourinho likes him as he's always dropping him when he's in top form and publicly criticising him so we could be in with a shout as it would mean he would stay in London and if we get Bridge as well it would attract him even more to help swell the spurs ranks with british players.

How much would you pay to bring Joe Cole in? I'd pay up to 9 million.

Although I would love to see duff, robben, downing or swp.
There is still andy reid - the guy has ability in bag fulls . I will be interested to see him in pre-season if can shed a few pounds/stones . He looked fantastic in the peace cup last year. When we bought him he was the most talked about player outside the PL( more than dawson). There is no doubting what he CAN do if he's up for it!!
I would prefer to see two full-backs!

even though we've bought a lot of players and come along way theres still alot to do. we need a left and right back, 2 left wingers and possibly a utility man but i think huddlestone can fill that role.

I think SWP could very much be a potential signing over the summer . As was it not wrote in the contract when Frank Arnesen went to Chelsea that , Spurs get first crack at any Chelsea players that become surplus to requirements at the bridge ? Also i agree that SWP may not be the greatest buy as we do need another hard tackler in midfield .

That's a fair price. But if we get a knocked down price, it could be around 8 million, which would be good to have him for.

Joe Cole is one of those players that fits into the 'can change a game' category, and one we could well accomodate into our already blossoming team.

Well it said in The Times today that we have asked to loan SWP with a view to buying him, don;t know the truth in this, but would be great if it was true!!
Spurs have asked to take Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips, a surprise omission from the England squad, on loan next season, with a view to a permanent switch in 12 months’ time. (The Times)

no to cole - we dont want too much ex west ham players. no to SWP - whats the point? we have lennon and routledge

Can't see the sense in buying him if Lennon continues to develop at his blistering pace. Would rather but a genuine left winger and keep Lennon on the right.

I wouldn't complain, would be good for us, more competion for Lennon can only be a good thing!
It would be good for SWP, playing more regularly and all that, and it would be good for England too!
Everyones a winner!

His presence would only hinder Lennon's progress. Ideally Lennon should play in about 65% of all our matches next season with Routledge getting the majority of the rest. There may be the odd occasions when we have to opt for a very defensive line-up that we 'll have to sacrifice natural wingers.
I don't want to see SWP coming into the side and playing reasonably well and keeping Lennon out, and thus affecting his confidence. We'll only be providing grooming of SWP for Chelsea so they could sell him at a higher price. I can't see us say spending 10-12 million on him shile having Lennon.
AndyHarker
22nd May 2006, 06:44 PM
I don't see it like that, however do agree with the grooming point, but competion for places is a must and im not 100% convinced that Routledge is upto the job... there is also talk about him staying at pompey!
Chinaman
22nd May 2006, 06:48 PM
Routledge was going great guns pre-season and only lost his place due to injury. Can't really see him at Pompey as Redknapp also said that Spurs would want to keep him.
AndyHarker
22nd May 2006, 07:09 PM
I didn't hear that Redknapp quote, and i agree he looked good at the peace cup, but i've not been totally convinced by some of his pompy games!
To be honest, i don't think we would get SWP anyway, i think he is more likely to go back to man city!

again the problem with both players is having a team capable of competing to afford their lightweight status. There must be doubts about routledge in some way, as for a start we loaned him out, and also he was only coming on as a sub for pompey. he was still a nightmare to play against and he beat his man more often than not, but is that too much of a luxury?? Harry thinks so. I don't see SWP being any different tho, and he's not 6-10m better than routy. If we take him on loan, it'll just be for the loan i'm sure. He's bound to go to the goons anyway.

23rd May 2006, 08:10 AM
If SWP can play with Lennon then I'd welcome him. He's better than Routledge anyway. I read yesterday though, an interview with Mourinho in which he stated that he thought SWP would establish himself in the Chelsea 1st team next season.
