View Full Version : Darren Bent - yes or no?

So it looks like at long last Darren Bent is going to be signing for us.
As I am sure a lot of you have read, and also have your own views, that a lot of people are unhappy with us paying what seems to be around £17M for him.
So here are some points...
* If we were buying Darren Bent from any of the top 4 clubs at £17M would it not be such a problem. Maybe it is because Charlton are relegated that we just think they are trying to be bigger than they are.
* The media were saying we were paying £10M for Gareth Bale when we actually only paid £5M with addon bonuses. I'm sure we would have done something similar with Bent and perhaps player exchanges
* When was the last time you saw a player turn down £75K a week because he really wanted to sign for us? Ok, ok, it was West Ham but still.....:p
* FACT: Bent scores goals and I am sure in the side we have now he will score more. There will be some matches where Berbs and Bent should work well together (Blackburn away etc)
* What if Berbs got injured and was out for 6 months. Defoe and Keane? Mido and Defoe/Keane or........Bent and Keane/Defoe?
* Bent wants to be an England regular (and boy do we need it) so he will be giving his all and right now Tottenham are the team with all the up and coming England players so this is another great addition to the squad.
Final thoughts...
How much did Chelsea pay for Andriy Shevchenko? over £30M
Remember his strike partner? Sergei Rebrov? £11M.....

I have pondered over this for weeks now and have reached the conclusion that it is a good signing (when it happens). My main reason for this is Bents ability to play with any of the strikers we have at the club. It doesn't matter if he plays with berba, Keane or Defoe (???) he stills brings more pace to the side and can play the target man role.
Yes the money is big, however he is 23 and entering the prime of his career. If you sold Owen in 4 years time he would be 31/32 and you would be lucky to get 3/4 mill for him. However Bents fee (if successful) would certainly be higher than we have paid. Therefore it does financial sense to me.
Did you know that 50% of his goals have between 70 and 90 mins.
In conclusion i think it is a good move. Would like to see Defoe stay, however if we can recoup the majority of the bent fee (10 mill +) then overall i will be happy.

Personally I think it's money wasted on an over-rated player.

Jol has a habbit of taking players such as berbatov, lennon, exc... and turns them into World class players... Hope this happens to bent... I like Bent... But I don't want Defoe to go?

Well I think it's 13-16m down the pan for no reason. There's nothing wrong with the forward line we've got TBH, it was the creativity behind them in midfield that sucked. Wrong priorities, wrong move. If Defoe goes for 10m then it's only a 5m outlay I suppose, but it all just seems so unnessecary.

I disagree, he's different gravy to Defoe and he can play with anyone.
He also gives us penetration, which is something we don't have. And he scores 50% of his goals in the last twenty minutes, which will help another area we need to improve.
I agree he is overpriced, but almost all english players are.
We will sign midfielders, you can put your house on it. It just happens that this went through first.

i'm not over joyed by this. We NEED a quality LM! Our strikers are more than capable, however, i feel somewhere in the course of the season he will score some important goals. I just hope we have some money left to sort out the midfield because that's our weakest part and we're sorting out everywhere else but that!
I really hope gardener is part of the deal! That would take the sting out nicely. 1 down (davenport), one to go.

this man scored goals for fun in a very poor side, if he gets the service from the mid and the right and left side of the pitch (which i'm sure he will) then he will be a great asset to the squad, so i think it's a bit harsh to say he's over-rated, only time will tell if you or i am wrong!

gotta to agree with choda on this one. he will be a good signing for spurs as hopefully he will be able to play with berbatov or keane. the amount he will learn from both these players will only help him become a better player. the prob with defoe was that really jol would only play him with berbatov or mido, now it seems if either keane or berb got injured bent could replace either assuming he's on the bench. going to be interesting though that if he is sitting on the judy for the start of the season will he become unhappy and seek a move again, assuming defoe goes then that would only leave us two recognized strikers. jol is going to have his work cut out again to keep them all happy.

He is overpriced, but for those also thinking it you best get used to it because for the next ten years at least the price of any player will be hugely inflated.

Still aghast that Liverpool paid 27m for Torres. If you reason Bent is about half the player Henry is, then at roughly 8 and 4 years respectively left at the top level, the fees are equivalent.

So am I. That's incredible. And I reckon it could be more of the same as regards Rafa and his inabilty to get strikers to perform.
He may not adapt either. Remember Morientes? And Shevchenko. It's a huge risk, that may not come off at all.

Like I keep saying, get used to the ridiculous fees, next year 27mil will seem small!
