For those of you on here who do remember the Glory days - the days of Greaves and Gilzean etc - do you think today's team have similarities to the team of the 60's I think Berba is so much in style like Gilzean and Kean is a good playmaker for himmuch like Greavesie was, that the similarity is there for the 2 G's - Also Lennon is he as fast or faster than Cliff Jones or John White? - Does Dawson have the same quality as Mike England had - what about King and Zokora - are these a Mullery or Roberts equivalent? Not Mackay there's no one of that stature yet ; but I believe the signs are there for the renaissance that is Tottenham, as they say on the web site there is only only one Hotspur - and these players epitomise that tradition in my opinion. What do the rest of you think and who do you think in today's squad matches those of the Glory Years.........

Who's Jenas remind you of then?

Me old man always mentions Berba being like Gilzean so you must be onto a winner there.

Although I too never saw that side I can see the comparrisons completely. I also see comparrisons to the early 80's sides, up-front Crooks and Archibald, at the back Perryman, Roberts. Midfield Lennon is a notch up from Galvin, we just need the Hoddle/Ardiles/Villa replacements and we'd be there. There are also comparrisons to the '87 side, the team that could of been all glorious.
Up-front Allen, Waddle on the wing, Mabbut and Gough at the back, Clemence in goal.

Gilly & Berb is there for sure,Keane & Greaves no,Greaves was unique, truly there was only one!Daws,a bit of Mo Norman or Mike England ,Davie Mac I wish we had someone fit to tie his boots!Lennon & Cliff Jones, both terrifying running at people, difference(at present) Cliff Jones generally made it count!John White could put the ball in a teacup from 40yds,skill & guile beyond belief, the only Spur who faintly reminds was his predecessor Tommy Harmer!Danny B,again unique,Bobby Smith, that style is long gone,Terry Dyson-Steed err Nah!Finally MJ ain't SIR BILL!

I agree greaves was untouchable, what pisses me off is that he is never mentioned up there with pele or maradona. I read in George best's book that in his first full season in the chelsea youth side he scored 114 goals. Know wonder why they called him "greaves the goal".

I think it's unfair to compare keane with such a legend like greaves, the only person that comes close to him is linekar.

Gentlemen, No way would I compare Robbie to Jimmy - Greavesie was my boy hood idol and always will be, I have met the great man twice now and both times he was as friendly as when he comes across on TV, but as footballer he was untouchable just ask the defenders he left in his wake. So please accept this correction I was trying to intimate that Keane and Berbatov are a similar combination to that of Gilly and Greavesie - in that they play off and for each other. As for the others White was an enigma true and I only saw him a couple of times once for Scotland and for Spurs - before he was taken. The analogies I think go on but the style and flair of those great teams has passsed into legend now - but I love the idea of the new shirts carrying a watermark of these great players; maybe this is something Puma should consider on these shirts, and on a separate issue why does the logo have to be so bloody big from Mansion we all know who they are and what they do its platered around the ground? A little more subtlelty wouldn't go amiss the puma logo or any other makers logo is only on the shirt as a symbol. Couldn't. Mansion do this instead of chest billboard - in the old days they never needed that on the legends shirts how times and teams have changed.

Great thread Ronsey ,

if the 07-08 lads do half as well as the glory days we'll all be well happy.

i think a winning belief is what is really missing from this squad, they/ we /everyone knows theyre good on their day/s but they dont seem to believe they can have their days against top sides or on too many consecutive occasions.

I dont know if Sir Bill was a winner before he joined Spurs?? But he clearly knew how to bring that winning belief to The Lane. MJ a bit lacking there , in fact we havent got any winners in our squad or did Berbs win title with Bayer?
Self belief and team belief is lacking on a consistent basis.
You heard the Liverpool fans on Tuesday 150% behind their team, a mistake is made and theres no groaning, only applause for what was attempted, different im afraid to the groans at The Lane especially, when the balls lost by Spurs or a chance is missed. Maybe if the fans there applauded the efforts more than groaned about the errors the players would be more motivated to attempt more things and so some of them would come off, confidence would soar and so on and so on. If you really believe that wont make a difference then at least try it .
How do you feel at work if your efforts arent appreciated but your errors are noted ?? hardly motivational is it?

Agree with Robbie not being like Greavse. I have seen plenty of footage of Greaves and his strike rate was insane compared to Robbie's. He didn't actually use skills or dribble around the defence, he simply decided to run past them then score. His finishing was unneringly accurate and efficient. He never blasted it if he didn't have to, he just placed it in the net from wherever he was. Incredible! A young Owen might be more comparable to him.

Thanks MJB - I agree with your sentiments what the crowd does, can influence the team that is sure, we do tend to take the groan approach more than most, perhaps because we have been spoiled in the past by the greats. But then some of those greats had bad days and they moaned them I remember what they used to say about Jennings - until he got his act together and he was the best of them all. As for Greaves and Owen, yes a good analogy only not a Spurs player - so not quite the same - the thing is with Jimmy he would do nothing for 88 minutes then win the game in two. No there was no one like him, or probably ever will be.

As quick as he was would he have succeeded in todays fast games I wonder?
