Never expected to have to start this thread...

However, if we finish outside the top 7 does anyone know if we have entered the Inter toto.......

Would anyone want us playing in this to get back in to Europe??

Maybe would sound better if we qualify through league position, however, it would also be great to enter via Intertoto and win the UEFA cup.

If it means us getting into europe I don't see the problem?

It shows complete desperation and greatly extends the season and games for the players. I expect the club plan to charge category A prices once again. If so, I hope the fans show that they're not just blind cash cows waiting to be milked by ol' farmer Levy.

'greatly' extends the season....it's a single two legged tie, introducing competitive football in the season early, which possibly could have helped save us the embarrassment of winning a friendly against inter last year, then losing immediately to Bolton, Everton et al... Setting up the hot-cold season we've had. Spurs must be in Europe, and if this is what it takes then this is what it takes. BTW if pompey finish 8th we only have to finish 9th to intertoto it, as I know for a fact they haven't registered for the competition...

pretty ****ing bad if we have to rely on this to get in to europe. The last i saw we were top of the fair play league which would enter us in to some draw.

not good is it.....

Yeh but no offence to the teams we're playing but it's a whole other kettle of fish to the likes of United, Chelsea etc

No, mate, that's qualifying direct with a 2 legged tie to qualify for the league format. Inter-Toto means playing 2 x 2 leg ties starting in the middle of July, an extra month in the season.

Interesting to note that currently we're exactly 17 points from both 3rd and 18th.

Iaong, how do you know for a fact Portsmouth haven't? I was under the impression every Club from 5th to 11th had entered for it.

Er guys, don't mean to talk out of turn, but before last season when did we last qualify for Europe via a league position?

We certainly should be setting our sights a little higher than Intertoto qaualification, but let's cement that place in the top six before we start considering anything else a disgrace...

I highlighted the operative word :)

yes intertoto would be embarressing , but some competative games pre season , helping to blend in any new signings could be a plus .

(trying desperatly to find a positive about the whole thing )

In the end you'd take what you can get in order to be Europe, it just means we'd be shagged come the final third of the season.

agree with Gregzy, only once have we qualified on league position recently , so what do we now get it by right?? we've gone backwards this season consistency wise, others have gone forwards and thats why this threads here.
one swallow doesnt make a summer, tho it can brighten up an otherwise dull day and is always better than a spitter!!!

Exactly, I started this thread more to highlight what are season is in danger of becoming. We had all the potential in the world to get to 2 cup finals and still have a good league run. Never thought with 4 games to go i would be talking about the inter toto.

For what it is worth i still think we will qualify via the league, however it is always best to have a plan B or even C

This thread has really riled me.

Look, let's face facts. At the moment, Tottenham Hotspur stand as the 9th best team in England. Doesn't matter how you look at it, the table doesn't lie. Now, as we all know, 9th position does NOT get you European football.

As AssaTM said, and I agree, we should win all of the remaining fixtures (a draw at riverside at least) but, however, we won't.

If we can manage to avoid any defeats in the last four and win the home games we will be fine. Even 5th could happen then. The other sides around us (Everton, Bolton, Pompey) have to play each other and top 4 sides.

What we do have is a very good chance of cementing our official status from last season as 5th best. But what we don't have is a divine right and some people seem to think that we're too good for the Intertoto. Maybe, on paper, but football is played on grass and if you ask me, I'd rather add 4 or 5 games on at the start of the season than go 9 months without European football.

Intertoto, Inter Two Bob, who ****ing cares, it's better than watching teams who aren't as good as us playing in Europe next season. Yes, I am referring to Bolton, Everton, Reading and Pompey.

**** the excuses of the lads being tired these ****s get 20 grand + to do what they love so they better pull their fingers out:mad:

lets just enter everyone in europe....it's getting stupid..I want us to g o on and win something but surely no team should be rewarded for finishing mid table in their league...it is just another way of milking the fans...and gives managers and players a cop out for being average...

And if the table doesn't lie then as it stands..everton and reading are better than us?...

Gino Ginelli

Yeah mate, they are. Everton have a proper midfield, and Reading actually play like they give a shit.

Welsh Spur
24th April 2007, 01:22 PM
As it stands, like i said, we are the 9th best team in England.

I don't agree with the sentiment that you're being rewarded for a mid table finish at all. How is starting the season early and having to play a bunch of shite European teams a reward? That would be a punishment in my eyes...the players would normally get the summer off but wouldn't if we had to go through Intertoto.

If Everton Reading etc do beat us to the positions, then yes, it would mean they've been better than us over the course of a 38 game season, excluding cup exploits.

But are you really telling me you think that Everton and Reading are better than Spurs? If so then I really think the people who think this would be wanting Jol sacked, as that would represent a SERIOUS regression on last year.

Well said, that's exactly what it is. If fans can't bear the thought of watching Bolton etc in Europe, then don't. But you have to earn a place in these competitions by finishing in the higher places and mid-table doesn't cut it.

Are Reading and Everton better than us? There's hardly anything in it. Reading have been more consistent over the season and throughout games whilst Everton took 4 points off both Arsenal and Liverpool and only conceded a goal in the 4 games. Spur conceded 11 and got a point over both games.

2 seasons ago we needed just a point at Boro and win at home against Blackburn to guarantee Europe. Strangely enough we're in a not dissimilar position now. We should do it but when you see the capitulation and dissaray against Arsenal in the second half, who'd put their house on it?

Me i reckon we'll get 8 points out the last 4 games!! maybe even scrape a flukey win at boro but won be holding my breathe!!
