Showing your true intelligence there mate, our best players were injured, that means they were hurt, not able to continue playing etc etc.
Keep your mouth up and you'll be aiming for **** of the year, congratulations on that. Shows how clever Charlton fans are, by the way, how comes your fans are so shit?

Hehehe. What a ****.
Back to the game, I will be there. It's possibly true that we had our chance and blew it, and they have Terry back now, but we have Robbo and Keane back and if we can play as we have been playing, then we CAN do it, but whether we WILL or not is dependant on Chelsea. If they don't lay down, then it could be bad. Whatever happens, it'll be a great game.

Bring em on! We're firing on all cylinders, Berbatov & Lennon are flying, and the morale is excellent. Unfortunately Chelsea are on form in the league as well, and Schevchenko in particular is starting to look like the lethal finisher he was at Milan all those years.

Zokora and Tainio (if fit) in the centre obviouly Lennon, but on the left right ot middle?? and who would make the other place?? Malbranque, Huddlestone, Ghaly or Jenas??

No surprises in the line-up with Saturday's 3 subs and Zokora back in. No Mido on the bench which also isn't much of a surprise.
However no Makele or Essien for Chelsea with Diarra at right-back and SWP and Mikel starting. Surely a great chance for Spurs to take advantage.

Too much respect I believe, or I really cant pin point what was so wrong, 2 moments of "brilliance" undone us, that was it, chelsea never ONCE looked like getting behind our defence or scoring, lets be honest, neither did we much, but it was even, and Chelsea like always got the lucky break, we should have showed more heart in this match, more determination, for sure, Chelseas midfield won more balls in the second half, but Chelsea never looked threatening, never ever in my eyes, thats whats so disappointing, it was up for grabs...

Well that was marvellous. That Tottenham team was reminiscent of the Tottenham team of 2 or 3 months back. How good is it that the Club have pissed me off twice in two days. No drive, no passion, no enthusiasm. In your big games you want your big players to turn up. I'm struggling to think of one decent player tonight.

19th March 2007, 11:24 PM
Yeh peterc I agree, if you guys are expecting the team to be world class now then you're sadly mistaken, Jol never said he'd deliver glory in the short term, and you guys WILL have to accept that, we're a top 5 side, but we're not world beaters yet, we threw away the Stamford Bridge tie yes, but this tie was never in our control (we never took the lead and scored 2 etc I mean), keep the players we have now, just selling the ones we dont need, bring in good players in positions we NEED them in, and then the team will improve yet again, it's a gradual process, guys :p

One can't accept 'it wasn't to be' for a game of football. For a game of Lotto maybe, a game of football - there is almost always someone at blame, this, once again, is the players for being lazy ****s. 2-0 down and we didn't show nothing.

Hmmmmmmmm
I spent much of the game tonight glaring at the little Russell Brand look-a-like down my local who had a Chelsea shirt on and his mouth open. You'll be pleased to know he ****ed off early. However, I am very unsure of what to feel about the football I witnessed. Part of me thinks we were just muscled out by a Chelsea side who seem to have a magical formula for getting results. The other part thinks we lacked confidence, gave the ball away far too much in midfield and were completely unsure of what to do when we got into a decent position.
I really don't know. What I do know is we COULD have won this tie, and that really ****ing hurts.
jrio
19th March 2007, 11:42 PM
There was a lot of commitment and discipline from the team but Chelsea, as expected, concentrated on denying Lennon and Berbatov time, and on the flanks forced us into touch. Too often our touch let us down, something imperative in a game like this. In the second half we had to score when we'd moved up a gear to put pressure on Chelsea who'd rarely threatened to get behind us. Their main threat had been from corners. What can you say about the goals? Shevchenko from nowhere, SWP from the right on his left! The crucial difference is that reversed Chelsea would have shown even more fight, determination and threat. We were all at sea for 20 minutes and Shevchenko could have got a third.
The Chelsea gamesmanship in the second half was appalling. The aggro at the penalty to intimidate Keane, the pushing of Jenas at the same time, Drogba feigning injury to waste time and Mourinho, exactly 4 minutes into injury time, after he's made a sub in that period, demanding the game end then!
Part of me thinks the Spurs hierarchy deserves this, treating supporters with contempt and demanding premium prices for second rate achievement.

It's not laziness - it's lack of belief and mental strength, an accusation that has often been labelled at us. You can say that at 3-1 at half-time in the first game we needed to win otherwise the tie had swung in Chelsea's favour but the clubs we aspire to compete with wouldn't accept that.

WASN'T TO BE, meaning the luck was not there as much, luck does help in football, I personally cannot point fingers at any particular Spurs player nor management, their first goal was class, no goalkeeper would have saved that goal. The second one maybe Dawson should have tried to close up Wright Phillips, however he did have an outstanding match. We were at times muscled out in the midfield, however we must also remember we finished our last game 48 hours ago. Chelsea do have stronger reserves to rely on than us.

Agreed on all points there, jrio. Chelsea's gamesmanship knows no bounds but sadly, it is never the nice guys who win things. As I had feared, Chelsea worked out how to play Lennon and Berbatov and did it with some verve. It is gutting, but I really don't think we can blame anyone.

All very valid points and nothing that I disagree with. However, you cannot say it wasn't to be when the team, in my opinion, just didn't even bother trying.
Answer me this, that team you watched out there tonight, was that the team against Arsenal in the Carlin Cup Semi Final second leg? Or the team that battled all game to come back from behind 3 times against West Ham?
It was the Arsenal team, that says it all. For the first half of the second half we couldn't even pass to another player in white. How can you explain that as it wasn't to be? We was let down big time tonight. We could have won this game, we could have actually attempted to win this game, but we didn't on either count.

West Ham? Surely you can tell the difference in several areas between West Ham and Chelsea? Didn't you think that in the second half we moved up a gear and needed to score? The first goal from nothing rocked us and you can look at 2 of their players being second-rate all season scoring wonder goals. The big difference is Chelsea never believe they've been beaten whereas Spurs think it's on the cards. I did but then I've seen similar for nearly 30 years.

It was the Arsenal team, that says it all. For the first half of the second half we couldn't even pass to another player in white. How can you explain that as it wasn't to be? We was let down big time tonight. We could have won this game, we could have actually attempted to win this game, but we didn't on either count.
No, we were not the same team that lost to the scum 3-0. Today we had passion and determination, but as I mentioned we do not have a stronger side than Chelsea, their reserves are much stronger than ours and that can make quite a difference especially when one needs to change tactics.

Yea fair enough, but it's not the other team i'm talking about. I'm talking about our one.
I don't know. From what I saw, from what the people saw who were sitting next to me, we weren't giving it our all. It wasn't a display of the past month. The let us down tonight. You can point out Lennon and Berbatov and say they got marked out of it. But you can't say the same about Jenas and Steed, Keane and Defoe. They all played shit. They all looked lazy and disinterested. Going forward we had nothing. Chelsea were tight at the back but no-one did anything to break them down save two or three moments during a whole 90 minutes.

20th March 2007, 12:30 AM
Lazy just isn't the word. Mal broke forward well, sometimes lacked control; Keane had the odd flick that sometimes wasn't accurate or exploited to any extent. Defoe couldn't get a sight on goal - witness the ball Stalteri crossed that fell between him and Keane. Lennon had some great openings yet showed the futility of coming in on your right from the left against a side that can easily close you down. This is the quality difference between West Ham and Braga, and Chelsea and Liverpool.
Jenas? On the one hand the great vision and athleticism that took him past Cole on the left in the second half, the other the corner he hit a few feet into touch.

well for what its worth , i thought we at least matched them in the 1st half , without either team breaking down the defence , second half i thought we started the stronger and then we were rocked by a class goal by schevchenko against the run of play .
didt really recover from that before wright-philips goal . dawson was slighly out of position for that but it was because he was just returning from a crunching tackle on the half way line .
after that we were always going to be chasing , and didnt show enough composure on the ball .
berby was obviously seen as our danger man and was surrounded and crowded out of the game , we didnt use the space this provided wisely enough . i thought lennon had a poor game , it just wasnt working for him when he moved to the left , i dont like seeing him there and he should have been switched over .
someone posted that they thought rocha was shit , but i thought our defence was pretty solid and apart from the goals they didnt really trouble us .
sum up , i dont think we were embarressed or outclassed ,just didnt get the break in what was a tight game , we lost the tie last week not last night .

Chelsea simply had the measure of us tonight. They soaked up all our pressure in the first half and picked us off in the second.
Boring? Yes.
Methodical? Yes.
The right thing to do? Without doubt.
They go through and we go out, and we have no-one to blame but ourselves. Resting the trio of stars actually did more harm then good as it blocked thier momentum going into this game, a couple of goals for Berby V Watford would have primed him for today, but instead, he just looked off the pace, and I'm not having Terry as an excuse cos we beat Chelsea with Terry last Nov. Berb had an off-day, Keane also. Steed really did give it his all, but his stamina is not of the level of Chelsea, and in the end, we fizzled out. No shortage of effort from the boys, but the better team prevailed tonight.

We weren't good enough, simple as that. Jenas and Mal are decent but we need better players. We cannot rely only on Lennon to unlock the opposition defence. Berbatov was awfully isolated most of the game.

I'll start by asking... would Mido, Defoe and Ghaly have done better starting this? Lennon was shit, Berbatov didn't touch the ball, and Keane essentially just flapped his arms around a lot. Controversial? Hmm...
Oh, and Jenas can't pass for shit. He may get the odd goal, but his distribution is diabolical. Fact.
Everyone else was terrific tonight and played some fantastic football. Very organised, we covered, tracked back in numbers and closed them down. Great stuff. Unfortunatley Chelsea did the exact same, and they are simply better at it. I'm fast starting to think that Chimbonda may be my player of the season. He's been sensational. Get's forward, but busts a gut to mark a run, or block a shot or make a tackle.
The only flaw I saw in Jol's tactics was Lennon in the middle. We were too narrow, especially when chelsea were the same. Lennon, as we saw glimpses of, belongs on that right wing. There was acres of space there, he did Cole a couple of times there. The knock on effect of this was that there was a lack of steel in the middle, Lennon isn't that player. So we saw Dawson charging out to break up play a number of times, leaving a gap at the back for Drogba to cushion the header to SWP. Jol should have spotted that, I know I did after 20 mins, and put him on the right and Jenas back in the middle (even though he was there anyway!)
Other than that, they were simply better than us. We played great, but no one could have seen the Schvchenko goal coming. That quite literally knocked the stuffing out of us, and stunned me into 20 mins of silence.
Anyway, we've had another good cup run, we've made a good account of ourselves again, and now we've got more time to get that UEFA cup and 6th place.

I completely agree GS, and didn't you say yesterday that Jenas would probably not realise he was in an important game. At times he just seems to be in his own game, I really don't think Zokora can play with him. When he is playing alongside Hudds or Tainio the midfield looks a much better unit.
Ghaly should of played instead of Jenas. For all his faults at times at least Ghaly plays with a passion and gets himself about the pitch.
Last night from the start Keane and Berbie seemed really off the boil, especially Keane. You are right about resting Berbie and Keane on Saturday, the should've at least played the second half against Watford to keep up the momentum.
Now the dust has settled I feel after the great run we've had we going to come unstuck at some point and have a below par performance. After about 20 minutes last night I knew it was going to be tight and something either unbelievably lucky or spectacular was going to settle the tie.
One positive, Mourinho set up tactics to stop us playing. That is very rare, usually he goes out tells them just to play their game and doesn't worry too much about the opposition.
The big negative, we are still suffering from the Frank Bruno syndrome (not going mad and appearing in pantomimes). We haven't got the killer instinct against the big guns and get the confidence knocked out of us at the sign of losing a game. There are only three teams that can do that Manchester Rowdies, Chelski and The Scum (and sometimes Liverpool). I think the minute the first goal went in the side had the first tie playing on their mind and were kicking themselves for finishing it off then. At times like that you have forrget about all that and just get on with it.

And Carvahlio should have been sent off for the penalty.
Anyway, semis in the Carling, Quarters in the FA Cup, at least the Quarters in the UEFA and we should consolidate 5th or 6th in the League. All in all a decent season, an improvement on last year and the momentum I firmly believe will keep up.
A lot better than how the season was shaping up 6-7 weeks ago.

I have to say that for possibly the first time ever I disagree with Spur. Up until the Shevchenko 'goal' we were great. Looked way the better side and the reason we got beat last night was two wonder goals and the fact that Chelsea came to stop us playin and have a squad that know their jobs inside out. I saw a lot of our players out-of-position last night (Dawson, Lee) and also once that 'SHOT' from the £30mill flop went in our players heads went down.
The midfield went shite for a good 15mins before they woke up and started to realise if we didnt score two we'd be out.
Anyway no complaints apart from the mentality after conceding. Good performance overall, lets remember this is Chelsea and we've gone out 4-5 over two legs. We're getting closer to matching the 'top 4'.
Lennon was completely crap last night. Their defence took Berba and Keane out of the game. Dawson was immense as usual and Zokora is getting better all the time. Needs a bit of shooting practice though!

dead balls were poor i admit but how many passes of JJs went to the opposition?? probably 4 . he had a good run beating Cole and put in a great cross to which Berbs bottled it even tho he'd have been going in against a keeper with a dodgy fragile skull . to be honest did we EVER challenge Cech in the air or were we looking after him too much, get in there, elbows up and scare the ****. ffs we even stopped playing when Carvalho was on the floor even tho his own teammates were carrying on playing.
Keane and Berbs gave the ball away too much and we should still have kept Berbs and Lennon on the pitch longer in the first match , use the excuse is to rest them but then bring Lennon on second half V Watford when were already 2-0 up  o and Lennon belongs on the right wing end of!!!
ahh well it was pretty much the same as the two legged Carling semi done well ,threw it away then lost the second match
onwards and upwards
Is it me or did Chimbo seem the only one who cared esp towards the end would have been nice to see one or other of the other monkeys get booted about the park a bit (by a player rather than a fan tho!!!)

Keane and Berbs gave the ball away too much
They didn't give the ball away too much for the simple reason that they played too little with the ball. And they played too little with the ball for the simple reason that our midfielders gave the ball away too much.
With midfielders like Mal, Jenas, Tainio, Ghaly, Murphy, etc we'll never be a top 4 club. No one of these would start for Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

Jenas did not give it his all, but he wasn’t the worst offender, I thought Chimbonda’s attitude stunk at times which shocked me, he just seemed to be resigned to defeat from the start of the second half, and was making sloppy passes, even backheeling the ball off the pitch which brought about much anger from us in the crowd.
Last night from the start Keane and Berbie seemed really off the boil, especially Keane. You are right about resting Berbie and Keane on Saturday, the should've at least played the second half against Watford to keep up the momentum.
Definitely. In a sense, we were right to rest them in case of injury, but at the same time, they were touted so obviously as our big three players, which would not only alienate the rest of the team, but tell Chelsea just who the dangermen were, Jose would obviously know this, but it was the whole team that was 3-1 up against Chelsea, not just those 3.
Now the dust has settled I feel after the great run we've had we going to come unstuck at some point and have a below par performance. After about 20 minutes last night I knew it was going to be tight and something either unbelievably lucky or spectacular was going to settle the tie.
Well, we do still have Chelsea and Scum in the league, and I fear the worst, especially in the latter, but I think we can get results from all our other games, along with throwing everything into the UEFA cup. Not many sides still have a cup to play for outside ‘the big four’. We are one of 3.
One positive, Mourinho set up tactics to stop us playing. That is very rare, usually he goes out tells them just to play their game and doesn't worry too much about the opposition.
Yep. Jose was all blasé after the game, but I know he feared us, you could tell they cranked it up a gear. They are a quality side though Chelsea, no amount of London angst can change that.
The big negative, we are still suffering from the Frank Bruno syndrome (not going mad and appearing in pantomimes). Heads immediately went down, it was as if, that’s it, game over. Forgetting that we came back from 1-0 down last game, and that’s 1000’s of fans are willing you on. I can’t understand it. But that’s Spurs for you. I’m not gonna be too hard on them, Chelsea had a game plan and it worked.

.............and another thing, why the fuff wasn't Carvalho sent off for the penalty, it was a blatant red card offence and had the shoe been on the other foot I have little doubt Dawson would have received an offer for an early bath. And the FA wonder why the refs are held in such contempt by all and sundry, fat middle aged incompotents the lot of them.

Welshie your right.
Now i've had time to think about it and got out of the awful mood those bastards put me in I have to say we didn't play all that badly - until the goal went in - then it was heads down and we knew it was over. I think the penalty did little to change the fact our heads were down.
The first half was, give or take, completely even. The second was all us until Sheva's cross. Everyone else thinking it's a cross? I hope so. I'm actually split on whether it was a cross or a shot, but siding with cross. I haven't seen it again though.
I also haven't seen anything about the fans running on, I was told a Chelsea fan ran on as well as a yid, anyone care to explain exactly what's being said?

I thought we were ok until shev scored, what was after all a great goal (that hurt).
What i dont understand is why after we'd bought JD on and were pushing them back by having 3/4 up front. Why didn't we go 3 at the back when Rocha went off and have Ghaly on instead of staltari. He's been playing well and would have been a better replacement for steed who'd been replaced by JD earlier.
As for Lennon. 1 of 4 things spring to mind.
1: chelski handled him well
2: he just had a bad game
3: He's starting to get a little jaded.
4: He's got 'Teddy' syndrome. (I'm in the england squad and dont want to get hurt,so stop giving me the ball)
If it's 4 i'm gonna be really p!ssed if he's running around like a 2 year old again 4 england

I think at the end of the day it was just a match too far after what has been an extroadinary few weeks. I think we just have to accept that Chelsea are a better team than us, and at the end of the day they probably just about deserved to win. But hopefully Glasgow and a top 6 finish still beckons.
