Talk about the game in here before, during and after

Spur

Oh no - we're away!!!

*sound of teeth chattering and knees knocking*

The Fulham game will no doubt boost our confidence so high we'll think it's a walkover, i'm going for a home win Gerry (who's Gerry?!?!).

That's not even how you spell Gerry (Jerry aha!). Something's not right in my head, I must still be drunk.

Lose 2-1. Spurs' cup form usually no resemblance to league form. Everything will now go on the cup games.

i think that we will win 2-1,the fulham game would have boosted the players confidence so much that it will bring out a good performance.berby and keane to score.

All depends who he starts..does he field the same 11..or will he try and freshen things up...I hope he starts more or less the same side..

We need mido to play away from home as he's more physical than the ledge that is berba!!!

olly27
19th February 2007, 01:02 PM
I agree - yesterday BMJ brought on Berba at the right time as well..to hold the ball up - as we saw he did more than that...but yes I agree against more physical sides away from home...mido should start

SurreySpur
19th February 2007, 01:20 PM
I'd be inclined to start with the same front two again, and the same two in central midfield. Robbie keane has a great record against everton and mido certainly has the beating of stubbs and yobo.

Andy Gray made a good point yesterday, Jol hasn't been consistent at all with his selection this season. He must put out the same starting 11 against Everton (injury and suspension permitting).

Yep totally agree :)

Johnson is a doubt with Cahill, Alessandro Pistone, Nuno Valente, Tony Hibbert, McFadden all missing the game. We have to go all out for the three points.

20th February 2007, 08:39 PM
yep agreed, same XI has to start that did against Fulham. i hope we will get all 3 points and thinkwe will. this is the time of year when lesser clubs with smaller clubs begin to patter out and hopefully Everton will decline in form

Gino Ginelli
21st February 2007, 01:21 PM
Looking at the players they're missing, and with us seeing Jenas and Defoe returning, as well as Mido starting to get himself back in the team, this is a great opportunity to get an away win and keep our season kick-start going.

Let's be looking for some more Mido / Keane combo's.

Matix
21st February 2007, 01:34 PM
I think we need to give the starting XI a go and see if theres any consistency there. I would like to see Mido given a go becaise given the chance he could be a useful striker.

Interesting to hear Jol is thinking of the possibility of fielding different teams for cup games next season:

"I can see why the Arsenals and Liverpools play different sides in the Carling Cup for example.

“Maybe that is something we have to learn for next year, to compete on all levels and still do well."

Is anyone else finding it hard to get the motiviation for this game? I mean if we win great, but it doesn't really help our league position that much, and the chances of us qualifying for Europe via the league are looking unlikely. If we lose then I won't exactly be distraught, and am definately more excited about the cups at the moment than the premiership.

Keane Berbatov

Gino Ginelli
22nd February 2007, 08:11 AM
Well, well, well. What do we have here? Two away victories on the bounce? Can it all be changing? Well I say let's just keep our feet on the ground and stay cool for once. Sudden swinging of attitude from (whispered) relegation fears to top six fantasies will only lead to complacency and inevetiable dissapointment. But two things stood out last night which contributed to the victory, things that have been lacking so far.

First, Zokora actually pressing and tackling the opposing midfield, leading to Lennon's run and Berba's goal. Secondly, Jenas actually facing goal, thinking positive and, crikey, having a shot on goal! Which he scored. Very well I might add. Essentially, a CM pair actually doing their jobs, similar to saturday. While they did get bossed around again in the second half, that was partly attributed to Moyes 5 man midfield. 3 on 2 is always going to be hard work. But invariably that allowed our attackers to have what I thought was a good game (although what happened to Robbies left foot will have to be explained by those behind the goal)

Also mention should go to Robbo, who is now back to his old self, showing great agility and shot stopping reflexes at the crucial moments. Arteta's goal was very well placed, so nothing against Robbo for that. Plenty against Uriah Rennie who again showed he's not fit to referee a conference match. Tit.

Anyway, as said earlier, let's keep the bouancy under control, and focus it into taking Notlob apart, 'cause nothings going to feel sweeter than "'avin" that lot... bar Huddlestone busting the net against the Arse and taking Lehmann's head clean off in the process... of course

MaccYid
22nd February 2007, 08:49 AM
Major observation from the last 2 games has been the return to form of Robbo. Last season he must have won us about 8/9 points with saves to either keep us in the game or protect our leads.

Earlier in the season some of those efforts by Fulham & Everton would have gone in and we would probably have lost.

So after an indifferent season, a big well done to Robbo. He has to make sure he continues it now for the rest of the season.

Ginola's Son

just been reading the suns write up on the game, what a load of bollocks. bitching about leon osman, and dawson and gaiving MOM to zokora. dawson had a blinder for us, providing some much needed impetus. Ok he gave away the free kick which was silly but otherwise he was magnificent. thought him and chimbo played really well. gardner hung pyo out to dry again and i really can't see why we kept him and let davo go. Our midfield looked a mess and totally lost in the second half. Jol had to freshen us up and bring on defo to hold the ball up.
Also thought lescott looks a quality player.

spurs61

I'm still on top of the moon (nice mix of phrases there) two victories in a row, both away from home against Premiership opponents. And we seemed to play decent football right to the very end of both games! Could this mean that MJ has finally accepted that his previous tactics were shambolic at best? Even Zokora had a decent game.

I note that our slump in form and improvement thereof has coincided with the inclusion and then removal of Huddlestone from the team, coincidence?

MiloMinderbinder
22nd February 2007, 12:11 PM
Was it JJ that tackled some scouse git to set up Lennons run? excellent tackle moreof that please. And Berba's finish was of the highest order. I am still to be convinced about Zokora.

And it's Bolton (bolt on) next, wonderful, that'll go on eof two ways, either we'll play them off the park or they'll bully us into submission, either way I am all for giving that **** Diouf something to roll around for, take it in turns to kick the faggott in the balls "that's from your missus you ****ing queer".

spurs61

Perhaps. But what are you saying...he's no good?

Technically or physically? Technically he's very gifted, has great vision, can use both feet and has a nice shot on him. Physically, although he looks imposing he is in fact a great wet lettuce! The real problem with Tom is his glaring inability to cover ground quicker than the proverbial tortoise. You can be the mosted talented player in the world but if you can't get around the pitch you aren't much use. He's more suited to Italian football than he is to the Premiership and unless he and the coaching staff spend a lot of time working on Tom's mobility, I don't see how he can be considered a regular first team player. It's a crying shame but that's the reality as I see it. :(

Ah c'mon! THis is the perfect time for you to admit defeat and come over to my way of thinking. The most obvious thing about the past two games is that we have played with guts, with passion, with drive, everyone seems up for the cup...not down for the count! Nothing of note has changed tactics-wise, it's merely the players actually turning up to earn their spurs!

C'mon S61, do the unthinkable and change to the right side!

Ah, but I've only ever been on the side of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, not Martin Jol the manager! I also always said that I didn't really want Jol to go, just to acknowledge some abysmal mistakes and rectify them. In fact, as the team has played a totally different and more expansive game in the previous two matches, surely you were the one who was wrong?! As was evidenced last night, the players were still pushing forward and attacking with ten minutes to go and one point in the bag, something you would not have seen two weeks ago. I'm told that the double "training" session last week was in reality a forum for the players to air the views on what has gone wrong this season and how to address the problems. It was the first time MJ has asked the players opinions and they loved it.

Anyway, I'm not going to celebrate until we've one more than two very winable away games; I expect at least nine points from the next four league games to show that we have indeed turned a corner in the season.

Spur

Aren't we all?

In fact, as the team has played a totally different and more expansive game in the previous two matches, surely you were the one who was wrong?!

I must have missed that different game then. I must say I only caught the highlights last night so I can have a limited say on how we played the game, but against Fulham we played little different to what we were before. Fulham still dominated large periods (as I hear so did Everton last night), and as I said after the game, the differences were clear - people were playing with balls, playing for each other, playing for the fans, and more importantly, perhaps, taking their chances. And that's the difference.

I'd also just like to point out that having a keeper on form seems to make a big difference, and that we most definately rode our luck at times in both games.

I honestly think its a bit of both. There's has been a marked improvement in player effort - and it comes under Jol's remit, as a manger, to boost his players and install belief to the best he can. When I saw Mido was starting against Fulham I was delighted - paid dividends as we know..and one notable point from last night was we went for the win in the last 15 mins as oppossed to say bringing on an extra defender and settling for a point..we didn't sit back, everton had their spells like we had ours - the difference being we went for it at the end and were rewarded for doing so...how many ponits have we thrown away trying to protect a lead or a draw and have been bitten in the ass?? For me their has been improvement over all areas..

agreed about playing in much the same way as before. we kept playing long balls, to keane mostly or straight into howards arms. berby doesn't like being target man too much, and leaving him isolated seems to be a sure way to piss him off and put him off his game. that's not to say he shouldn't get on with it and learn to take the knocks. Considering he scored a great goal, he played without confidence (and without the ball) for much of the game.

for me the game was pretty even, everton probably had the more goalmouth chances but didn't look like scoring. we looked slightly lost and lacking in direction. Jol has to stop the team playing poor tactically though. lennon was unused in the first half and we pass the ball around far too slowly. by the time zokora has received the ball, turned towards his own goal and then looked up and turned the right way again, the impetus has gone.
It may have been a good game to warm up for bolton, but bolotn will be encouraged by our lack of direction and tackles. i think they'll beat us unfortunately.

Spur

It took no more than 4 seconds for Michael Dawson to play a long ball to their keeper...WTF?!?!

DiamondGeezer
22nd February 2007, 04:03 PM
Going back to fulham and everton having parts of the game, for one we were away from home and the home team will always have parts in the game where they will be all over the away team and for two, whoever you are playing and wherever the opposition will have a spell in the game of dominance its just football. So i wouldnt worry about that.

I didnt see the everton game as with spur i just saw the highlights but we got the win, and played ok, maybe i didnt see it all but last year we didnt play well in everygame and it shows a gd team that can win when playing badly.

same as the top sides.

but i think a good season would be getting into europe whatever way, but im not sure if the intertoto counts but well see.

I saw good things,1st half was excellent & I thought we were unlucky to be tied at the break.2nd half Everton came at us hard for a while, but really weren't that dangerous & then it got interesting as we didn't SIT BACK,but went for the win & got it...deservedly!I'll never be a fan of Gardner, but again we got away with it...Zokora is starting to make some good runs,Tainio had a good game(would be interesting if he could stay healthy)Berb is magic....BUT the most important thing of all, Robbo is regaining his form & that spreads confidence through the team. Two successive away wins against Prem opponents who are notoriously hard to beat on their own turf, catches my attention anyway!

i think MJ finally discovered some motivational tactics hence the double training session last week.......and look at the results of it so far. However lets wait until we win the next three in a row then congratulate him albeit a bit too late for this seasons league campaign.
