Sven today confirmed that he will take Wayne Rooney to the WC finals come what may. personally i think he's going to only miss the group stages if that but this is a huge lift for everyone to know that he will be there and will comeback in key games after the group stages. this is absolutely fantastic news.

That sounds like the exact words of Jamie Redknapp?

it is, but not everyone is blessed with sky sports like us

So we may well have ashley cole, Michael owen, Sol Campbell, Wayne Rooney, Jermain Jenas, Ledley King all recovering from long term injuries with no match fitness. That sounds a little risky to say the least, the poor preparation and lack of experimentation during friendlies may well cost us dearly.

The last time we went into a tournament with injured players was David Beckham, and he played absolutely pants.

I think Sven is a total idiot and taking all these injured players like he surely will do will make England a joke in the world cup. We need inform fit players not big name injured ones. Rooney is class, but last time he had this same injury it took him 10 weeks to heal before he could even start working on match fitness.

I think I wish Sven was gone now..

Rooney has never had this injury before!

Yea he has and it took 12 weeks or something till he was fully fit. It was the year he left Everton for Man U. He done it vs Portugal I think...?

What might have been if he never got that injury right at the begining of the Portugal game. Ah well that's footy for ya

No injured player who is out for any part of the world cup, or has been out for a while i.e owen, campbell, cole should go. simple as. This team is run incorrectly, there is a wealth of English talent not even given a chance coz Sven has favourites. The likes of Nolan, Bent, Parker, Defoe etc have not really been given anything near to a decent chance because of the 'clique' within the england squad. Form has never been a factor in Sven's selection process. Owen Beckham Ferdinand etc all picked regardless. It's pathetic, to say the least....

I can't agree. Rooney is THE main man for England, without him our chances (which are not that high anyway) are dead. He has to be given every chance of making it even if he's only fit from the knockout stages onwards. Would have to give Cole and Owen a chance in the warm-up games too!

I think you underestimate England mate. We're not a one man team yeah Rooney would be missed as would Owen and Cole, but we got adaquate cover with Bent, Defoe, and Bridge. Bent has scored 18 goals in a sh!te team this season, Harewood another striker who has scored a good few in a sh!te team. With Robbo in goal, Terry in defence, and Gerrard and Lampard in midfield we are well capable of competing with the best teams in the world.

I agree, Rooney is a great asset, but there are ways of performing and ways of winning without him.
Mainly it just means that somehow Gerrard and Lampard will have to work something out to be able to play together.

It is obviously a little early debating whether he should go. Give it another 2 to 3 weeks to see his progress. If he is expected to be nearly there, he should be in the squad.

Because of who Rooney is I think we have to take a risk and put him in the squad but it is a big risk. Six weeks is just minimum time it will take for it to heal so it will probably be another two for him to feel comfortable so that is 2 months! Last time, although a different and more important bone, it took him 12.
All this based on the fact we do well enough to still be in the competition when and if he is fit.
The problem would not be so bad if Sven did not take the other injured and out of form players such as Owen, Cole and Campbell.
I'm just wondering now if with his Rooney situation King loses his place because of it.
Spur

It will be centre half that loses his place - unless Sven only takes one right-back and Jamie Carragher to cover, which is what i'd do, then take five strikers.
Personally I wouldnt take rooney now, but still take five strikers nonetheless.

I personally think both Lennon and Dawson should have guaranteed their places...like I said, if form came into the question.

We have to take rooney, there's no choice. We don't have another player like him, and if he is only fit for the second round, so be it. Imagine it, 1-0 down to Germany, last 20 minutes, bring Rooney on - you'd back him to score one and make another, even after 6 weeks out!!

Rooney has to go ... half a rooney is better than any of his possible replacements! but can he afford to take owen if he isn't fully fit as well surely that leaves him too thin up top ( although that has been said about sven in the past!!)

2nd May 2006, 08:23 PM
We need to take him, but at least we have the option of selecting someone else if he is not fit. New rules mean I think we have the day before the Paraguay game to change him with someone else (exactly who with i dont really know) as long as he has a medical reason which he has.
But I agree we are still a good team without him although a great team with him

If the strikers are on form then they could still win I think

Maybe if Rooney isn't there from the start it won't be so bad. It lowers expectations and takes the pressure off. Look at '66 no greavsie ... he didn't get into the final team!!! Everyone is saying how he will be fit for the semi/final . surely we get that far then the squad will deserve to be there regardless!!!

We have a strong enough squad to win the wc, with or without rooney! Our team is young but experienced and we have the best mid-field in the world! Our defence is quick and solid and the fringe players are good enough to walk into 90% of the other wc teams starting XI, if, we get a little bit of luck and remain positive (and that includes Sven substitutes) we have an excellent and realistic chance of bringing the trophy home with us!

There is only one weak link in the english team .. Sven he isn't the most tactically aware. most times it's case of hope the players can do it. If he opens up his ideas and allows formations to change depending on the situation then we have the ability to beat anyone. Usually it's a case of pass it to beckham or rooney and hope!!!
Stevie G and carry england to world cup much like baggio in 94 if he allowed to . not playing beside lampard but carrick instead.
AndyHarker
4th May 2006, 06:21 PM
Stevie G never seems to reproduce his club form in an England shirt, we REALLY need him to up his game at international level if we want to win this year! If, SG can reproduce the form of CL final last year, we have as good as won it!

I honestly think carrick could sit in the middle and let stevie do his thing. he has more energy and desire than any of them bar maybe rooney and becks.
imagine the attacking force of becks, cole , bent , defoe/crouch and an all singing all dancing stevie g with carrick pulling the strings. Oh let's not forget billy whiz( lennon ) on the bench waiting for his crack at them. Defensively they will stay sorted.( as long as campbell gets another slap in the nose)
I think we can be optimistic . but will mclaren have a say in what happens at the world cup???
AndyHarker
4th May 2006, 06:34 PM
McClaren will have his say, i was reading Sven's response to the appointment earlier, and he says that McClaren is very vocal about the squad already! I just hope that, if required, McClaren will be screaming from the touchline, egging the players on

The important thing for Rooney is to try & keep his cardiovascular fitness up. With a foot injury the best option (when he's not in his oxygen tent) is the pool.
