I'll go with that....3-1, Berbatov ain't scored in a while so I'll go with Berbatov, Defoe and Huddlestone. Dyer for the barcodes.

And who do you WANT to start between the two?
Personally I want Keane to play!

I want Keane to play left wing. With Defoe and Berba up front and Steed in the middle with Hudd and li'l Lennon on the right.
I'd rather Gardner at left back than Lee right now, so bring back Benny.

Ledley's only just back in training so at least a week away, unless Spur's had a dream about him playing...:D

12th January 2007, 12:50 AM
I think it will be close considering Newcastle has played quite well compared to their early form, and honestly Martin's pace and skill scares me without Ledders suiting up. With Ledley not in the squad, a 2-1 scoreline seems reasonable, but if we destroy them, i'll be very surprised and equally elated.

His fitness couldn't have dropped as all the time he's been 'injured' he's been working in the gym, so I would imagine he'll slot straight in.

I'm very worried about Martin's (Obafemi, not BMJ!) pace assuming that Leders won't be available to play. Also concerned about Duff/Dyer breaking from midfield, especially down the flanks. I've got a funny feeling this will be a 2-2 draw. Berbatov to score one at least, he's due a goal or two.

Mido out with a groin injury(hmmm) and no sign of Davids yet again. This would be a very good game to bring Ekotto back.

And watch him get ripped apart by Dyer, Duff and Martins? I definatley wouldn't play BAE as he's dreadful in one-on-ones. I'd still think about playing Davids at left back if only to add some aggression to the side.

oh that's a good idea, why didn't I think of it.....:)
Too late anyway he's not likely to ever be seen in a Spurs shirt again. Also I do not like seeing players who are clearly on their way out given games over those that have a future - Murphy!

Duff's injured, Dyer will probably be playing(if fit) centrally as support to Martins, whilst Martins won't be anywhere near him.
Maybe I'd consider Davids at left-back if it was 3 years ago but it's as fanciful as playing Hoddle in midfield.

12th January 2007, 08:18 PM
They made it sound like Ledders would make it, I feel we actually really need him for this one. I don't support either left back playing, but i'd rather play Benny just because. Good argument I know. Lee has been poor recently - there you go.
I would prefer Keane left wing with the other two up top. I realise that this has about as much chance of happening as Halley's comet passing us by in the morning so i'll go with the same team (bar Lee) that has been so dreadful lately.
And i'm not very optimistic.

shay given has had a good half but to be honest most of the shots have been straight at him. better finishing and he wouldnt of stood a chance.
tainio is having a good game , althought it is against a clearly unfit butt and ramage (who are ya?!)

Weak goal to concede, Given has kept them in it. But we are playing well. Nothing more than that really, there have been times when we have played the wrong ball but nothing too bad.
I'm just waiting for someone to blame Robinson or Jol for the goal.
I also take it Defoe is pissing people off by being too selfish by going on a mazy dribble and having a 40 yard shot...?

they both give the ball away but at least ghaly looks up and virtually every time wants to move forward or play it forward . lee on the other hand either passes back or to the side and rarely ever overlaps. hes unbelievably negative at times, considering he has pace. whenever he does get forward his crossing is disgraceful with either foot

The ref went to the dressing room and booked chimbonda. He is a lucky boy, the linesman was looking straight at them and was only about 4 feet away, must be a spurs fan.

saying jol should be sacked is daft its the players, esp our defending at the mo that is letting us down, its switched from the forwards. at some point this season we will get it right across the park (it'll be too late)
however jol made another of his bizarre substitutions. taking off davenport then pushing dawson up front. then telling zokora to play centre half. wtf???? the mind boggles.

This is ****ing shocking. How have we ended up losing this??? Serious questions need to be asked of both players and management.
Just the players. I think Jol should deserve credit for how he managed this game. From our point of view it was in the bag - it's up to the players to make it happen and they didn't.
Whoever said we were arrogant - I said exactly the same thing.
That Geordie **** should of been sent off the one who done Lennon from behind. Dyer is the only Geordie player to come out with any credit from me - the rest weren't all that, we were miles better.
Loss of concentration at points cost us. You'll see it was Teemu who was defending for the Butt goal where was Calum? Without Ledley we look weak at the back. What else to say? Huddle didn't dominate the game like he should have/needs to.
Defoe MOM, great play, deserved more than the one goal but for some inspired keeping. In my view the two best keepers in the Premier on show today - even though Robbo hasn't shown it this season just quite yet.
Serious work needs to be done on set pieces. I feel like shit.

I have been saying for months that we won't have a good season in the league this season but will have an excellent season in the cups, especially in Europe. Next season, however, we will be a top three team in the league. That's absolutely certain.

Sticking Dawson up front for the height, and he's better in the air than Davenport.
Zokora on at centre half for the pace to stop Martins breaking away as Sibierski dropped back to defend in the air.
It was odd, but there was logic behind it.

I didn't mean from a tactical point of view, i think the mental side of our game needs some serious work. We started the game like we wanted to rip them to shreds, we were on fire. Then it goes pearshaped when they equalise, we completely go to peices, we looked completely clueless. I understand that it knocked the stuffing out of us but we looked like we didnt know what to do. It seems to be something that plagues us season after season.

Sticking Dawson up front for the height, and he's better in the air than Davenport.
Zokora on at centre half for the pace to stop Martins breaking away as Sibierski dropped back to defend in the air.
It was odd, but there was logic behind it.
True, yet sticking the centre-half up front has never resulted in a goal. How many times has it been tried?
Great strike from Martins but yet again a distance shot from their left. A goal from Nicky Butt away from home shows great weakness on our part. We allowed a side with great injuries too much of the ball. I thought Tainio was quite insignificant once again.
Three home defeats compared to 2 in the whole of last season and yet to play ManU. More witheringly, goal difference for the two sides we beat last season but lost this season: 7-2 last, 2-5 this.

I'm not sure which part. We've lost 3 times already(Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle) and are yet to play ManU who won here last season and are leading the league so will expect to win.
The goal difference; Everton 5-2; Newcastle 2-0 both last season. Everton 0-2; Newcastle 2-3 this season. Tellingly neither of these sides are in CL contention.

Ah, how could I forget! Jenas rubbish in the first half but lays on the goal for Mido and then scores with a header. I guess it's because it was this time 2 years ago. Still, more revealing figures: 4-0 v 2-5. In fairness, both sides have paid big money for strikers who have scored against us in both games.

and before people start saying that when king is back it will sort it, he did a shocking example against these ****s up north for dyers goal.
i think im gonna have a go at the lottery this week as well, said 10 secs before martins goal that we always give away ridiculous goals from distance (campo, tugay, makelele, martins, shorey, barry etc) and when we do concede it always looks like they are gonna score again.

...and before people start saying that when king is back it will sort it, he did a shocking example against these ****s up north for dyers goal.
Disagree. King made sure Dyer didn't waltz past him and have a clear shot at goal. Dyer was looking to do that and only had a shot as a last resort. I do feel Robinson should have stopped that but he just looked completely mystified. He looked as though he thought it was going wide.
6 goals against Toon stiffs! Shocking. I just think it shows, despite the money spent, we are no nearer the top 4 and in fact further behind. I supported all the signings so I have no complaints about that.
I think it has to be taken into account that Spurs have only been consistently high finishers under Bill Nick. There is nothing in our history, in contrast to the Big Reds, that means we should usually be in the top 4. Titles are very much exceptions - Rowe's push and run side and Bill's double side. Even Bill could only do it once. It's very much the nature of Spurs. I was fortunate that my early years coincided with a number of top 4 finishes. Even then the shelf was complaining and constantly demanding Clough and Venables!

Sorry but we scored after totally outplaying them for all the match until that point. then the Toon kick off and surprise surprise we do it again and sit back , straight away we stood off them despite having ran the game earlier we decided to let them play cos we were 1-0 up , same old negative shit, then we start playing again once they equalise go 2-1 up and take our foot off the gas again. ok ok we had many more chances than them and deserved to win but we still AGAIN!!!! lost the momentum .

My take on the game is total disappointment!!
There are three instances where I can swallow defeat
1) When we have played utterly shit and deserve to lose (example - Arsenal this season)
2) Where we have played very well, but not quite as well as the opponent (Liverpool away, this season)
3) Where both teams have played very well, but someone nicks it (5-4 Arsenal, 2004)
But this is the dreaded 4th instance where I just cannot and will not accept defeat...when we are the better team by far and still lose. Thats a sickener and blame just has to be handed out.
Robinson - You do not get beaten on your near post, yes, Davenports defending should have been better, but it was still a goalkeeping error for me
Davenport - Ruined all his hard work of late, with an inept Doherty-esque performance. He looked nervous throughout the match,
Lennon - I HATE criticising him, but at 2-1 up, hardly a commanding lead, to start showboating and doing wasteful backheels is the sort of thing that can cost you...and it did.
Huddlestone - Anonymous for most of the first half, not what he have come to expect from him. I just hope he isn't starting to beleive his own hype.
Tainio - Why Jol is starting him is anyone's guess, against Portsmouth and Cardiff he was our worst player, how he can earn a starting berth over Zokora is beyond me. He was terrible yesterday and was to blame for their winner.
The rest of the team all played very well. We dominated the game for the most part, and look much more of a threat in attack, Given made some superb stops, but after we went 2-1 up, will really should have made it 3 or 4, we just collapsed, in true Tottenham-under-Pleat-or Hoddle stylee. I don't like to see that from a team managed by Martin Jol. You do not lose home games in that fashion.
If we do not bounce back immediately, we will be savaged by those red bastards!
JJ
15th January 2007, 10:53 AM
We didn't really collapse at all. We dominated near the entire match, and conceded goals during very brief lapses of concentration.
For the first goal, Huntington was Huddlestone's man, but he got caught up in the movement of everyone, then ended up getting blocked off by Sibierski.
The second goal was freak. Dawson was tracking Martins, and doing the right thing by easing him further out wide. It was an awesome strike. Some might say Robbo shouldn't have been beaten at his near post, but it was hit very well and noone could have expected that to happen.
The third goal, although well pulled off by Newcastle, was again a lapse of concentration. Ball fed into Sibierski (I think it was him?) which meant Davenport had to follow him out to stay close. Butt kept running, Tainio didn't track him well enough, one-two is played and Butt finishes well. (Not sure who asked why it was Tainio defending against Butt for that goal, but that's why)
You get slack and you get punished.

JJ....how can a 2-1 lead that is turned into a 3-2 losing position within a couple of minutes, vastly against the run of play described as anything less then a collapse.
It may have been a brief collapse in that we went for the equalizer for the remainder of the game, but in those 3 minutes, 3 points turned into none. Thats a collapse for me.
Martins was the only goal that couldn't have really been prevented
And we should have really had at least 4, we didn't take all of our chance, thats not including the great saves by Given.
JJ
15th January 2007, 11:07 AM
If we'd collapsed we would have been thrashed. They had 5 shots on target, we had 13.
There's no collapse there, just a poorly defended free kick and then 2 minutes of substandard defending which lead to 2 goals.
The best part of the other 87 minutes of play was us. We created chances throughout the whole game, right up to the final whistle.

We generally defend pretty well. I think we have more of an issue with the area between midfield and defence. Alot of the time there doesn't appear to be any sort of clear shape, so players tend to get lost between the two and we get punished.
I thought Tainio's workrate yesterday was good, but beyond that i still struggle to see what he brings to the team as far as the football is concerned.

There is a serious lack of aggression amongst the players. It seems to me that they think they have a divine right to play football and not get thier hands dirty. There is also a very damning lack of responsibility taken by the majority of players, not one of them ever attempt to take the game by the scruff of the neck in the way that Butt did yesterday.

Sadly it was preventable. Teemu's stupid and sloppy ball (symtomaptic of our season) to Defoe on the edge of the area put us in real trouble. As soon as Newcastke started to break I knew they would score, it's just SOOOO much like Spurs. I'm afraid Tainio was also at fault for Butt's goal, a weakassed challenge and no strength shown to prevent Butt from turning him. Teemu the Terrier? More like Teemu the poodle.

I thought we were superb yesterday (bar the defence lapses!) and am gutted that we didn't take the three points..even the newcastle fans know they rode their luck big time yesterday.
The crux of this is that we'r a couple of players short of being a top four side..we need a more aggresive player in the middle of the park (whether zokora is going to manage this remains to be seen) a lefty and a left back (even though lee wasn't bad yesterday and am not his biggest fan). A centre back is aslo required...to deputise for king or daws.
Above all though we are lacking serious leadership on the pitch.
I must add malbranque battled well yesterday and was very busy..can see him being a big player for us..I also knew it would be the new year before we started to see the best of him due to his long injury lay off.

Olly, exactly, we played so well, which I why I find defeat so unnacceptable, bloody Newcastle, it happened in the cup in 05 too, totally outplayed them, yet, they get the result. It's not fair...but that is football, unless you are a top 4 four team, you just don't get the luxury of good fortune.

The crux of this is that we'r a couple of players short of being a top four side..
Not that old chestnut! That's generally what we were all thinking at the end of last season and we brought in 4 players in the summer, yet we've gone backwards. Even if you discount Zokora and Ekotto as not having performed well, there's still Berb and Chimbo who have. I feel we'll be a couple of players short of being a top 4 side for a while yet.
The weakness of the left side is chronic and no early solution looks in sight. Whilst Mal has been an improvement there, he and Lee can too easily be forced off the ball or forced inside. No central midfield combo has been truly convincing and without King we look too likely to concede goals. Nearly a quarter of our games have seen us concede 3 goals.

Have to agree with the last post. We are way off being a top four team at the moment. We lack the self-discipline to not choke once we get in front.
I'm not sure that it's self-discipline which is to blame, the players are clearly told to play in the manner they do having gone a goal up. We had exactly the same problem last season and it resulted in the loss of the Champions League place (blessing in disguise), it appears that neither the management nor the players have learned their leason.
I just can't figure out the thought process behind some of our tactics and especially the substitutions. Yesterday, for a few examples, Newcastle lined up with one of the least experience left sides I've ever seen in the Premiership whilst we had a very quick and dynamic right hand side. Can anyone explain why we were not constantly attacking Newcastle's left side? A further observation is the mind boggling substitutions, as far as I could see Teemu had a very poor game whilst Steed buzzed around busily and was a constant thorn in Newcastle's side. why in the name of everything holy did Jol decide to withdraw Malbranque? What was wrong with putting Steed in the middle to continue what was his best performance in a Spurs shirt? One more question, when will we accept that Calum Davenport is a liabilty who has no clue how to defend or dominate his centre forward? Does Calum think that by marking space he is doing his job properly or is it just another abdication of responsibility?
Ginola's Son
15th January 2007, 12:54 PM
I'm not ready to turn on Calum just yet, because I have seen him play well, he's inxperianced at this level and is not the finished article yet. He know's he's in King's shadow and he is trying...but yesterday he was not good enough by half.
Steed was fabulous yesterday, I always knew he'd be at Spurs one day, and you are right, we need to give him 90 mins, he looks fit to me, yet Jol has pulled him off (not literally) in every game. I think Tainio must be Jol's little bitch.

The guy is 24, he's spent quite a bit of time playing in the Championship (and looked distinctly average) and has spent two seasons trying to make the step up. He has not convinced in any Premiership game he has played and we have conceded stupid and sloppy (that word again) goals in every game Davenport has played. Dawson looks a shadow of his usual self when Davenport plays and I have nothing but sympathy for him. I actualy thought that Davenport had one of his better games by his standard but he's patently not good enough and should be nowhere near the first team. Added to that is the fact that the club are clearly trying to include him as a makeweight in the Ashley Young saga which is not going to help either his confidence or concentration.

We started with all the right moves got our reward and then folded faster than Superman on laundry day. Why the hell did we stop carving them open down the flanks? I dare anyone to say that the manager can't be held at fault for that.
Davenport:mad: needs to be put in the same category as Zokora:mad: , i.e. neuter the **** so he can't breed and prevent further generations of incomptence - the boy is a complete shambles and Dawson suffers as a result. Who taught him it's a good idea to follow the deep lying centreforward over the halfway line - ******.
All 3 goals were eminently preventable, why was Chimbonda bombing forward at 2-1 and why the hell was Martins shown onto his LEFT side, do the team not do basic research and analysis into the oppositons strengths?! The 1st and last goal were individual sloppiness from Davenport:mad: and Tainio respecively although Robinsons position for the 2nd and 3rd goals was also questionable.
As it happens Tainio had a decent game, the problem was that Hudd is so immobile that Teemu had to cover his ground for him as well. I wonder if we don't need to play two central mids with Hudd to do the fetching and carrying for him.

Davenport is just a liability, Lee im not even gonna waste my time on that c*nt!!
Dawson needs a rest and i think needs to work on his distribution as whacking it ip the pitch sometimes doesnn't help
Hudd - Starting to believe his hype a bit too much and needs to be brought back down to earth a bit
Ghaly - I dont care what you ssay he's wank end of!!!
Berbie doesn't like it away from the lane and needs to sort that out right now!!!
AND finally Tainio - WHAT THE F*CK?????????
finding it hard to disagree there fella, anyway theres no swearing on this board:rolleyes:

It's not that difficult,we squandered a pile of chances, defended like shyte & started to showboat at 2-1 instead of burying them! This one felt about as bad as Spurs 3 - citeh 4 in the Cup a while back...all I can say is that we'd better win a cup as we're going nowhere(at least nowhere upwards)in the league!
well said my friend, anyways we gotta win a cup coz ive made a promise to streak,im sure other members will fill you in:p

Well KingKeane,I'm sure you've thought long about this...why did Keano try & return the ball to Berb after he had been put clean through, surely he should've smashed it across the keeper for the far corner????
it was Ghaly and it's becaue he's not a centre forward.

If you really must know you nosy gits. I had my question to Clive Allen published in the program yesterday. Clive is one of my all time favorites and I think he has conducted himself admirably throughout his time as a Spurs player and coach. My question was this;
Firstly I'd like to take the opportunity to praise you for the excellent role you play as a high profile ambassador to the club, your eloquence and passion for the club is evident for all.
You spent some time in the French league with Bordeaux; what made you decide to move across the Channel? Was the influence of Messrs Hoddle and Waddle a factor in your decision or did you feel (as I did) that the standard of British football at the time was poor in all aspects including player salaries? Do you consider your time with Les Girondes a success given your spectacular scoring rate in the Lilywhite shirt?
I think it might be a good idea for the forum to submit questions on a regular basis as we will raise the profile of the forum and attract the fans who go to the games. Thought/comments?

Funny you should ask that, I was frothing at the mouth last night watching that games. Did anyone else notice the paper thin Newcastle defence and their childlike lefthand side? So if Steve Bruce, that managerial colossus, can spot the weak link in the barcodes , namely their total lack of competant defenders, why can't Martin Jol?

Well, to be fair the Newcastle defence didn't do much against us either.
The only difference last night was that Birmingham scored their chances.
spurs61

And Newcastle scored......once. No, the only difference is that Birmingham went out with a game plan and stuck to it. They also didn't allow Newcastle to hit them on the break at pace which is their only real asset. The fact is that once again we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, another inept tactical display.

So 13 shots on target and the majority of possession all game isn't sticking to a game plan?
Creating chances from start to finish isn't sticking to a game plan?
And we got hit on the break once and they scored a freak goal from it. There was nothing tactically inept about it at all. Huddlestone didn't mark Huntington properly for their 1st, and Tainio didn't track Butt for their 3rd.
Don't blame the loss on tactics if it was down to slack individual defending during vital moments.

Brum should have had at least 4 goals in the first half, all clear chances. As it was only 2-0, Newcastle were back in the game after Milner's long range effort but then Taylor was sent off 2 minutes later. Newcastle didn't get an easy goal back early as they did against us and that made all the difference.
Worth remembering our home game against Blackburn last season where we were greatly outplayed yet won 3-2. It's not all one-way traffic.
