for me nicely.

im not bothered if we dont get 4th, this season has been the best on record in the premiership and has seen our club make massive strides. im more than confident the step up can be made next season and right now im chuffed to bits with how the spurs have done.

if we miss out on 4th to the goons then so be it...it wont happen next season ;)

I'm sure everyone will be delighted with 5th come the end of the season, but NOW, our destiny is in our own hands...

Imagine the likes of the Nou Camp next season?

If we can't win at Grimsby, what chance have we vs Madrid and Barca?

At said at the start of the season, 6th will do so anything above that is better. Right now we need some or any European competition and it looks like we are getting it at last. More importantly we are getting it on merit, not through the cup or stupid fair play awards but through a good league position.

Imagine this, our season hits a high when we WIN on Saturday against the Arsenal and we secure 4th spot only for them to go win the Champions league.

or....

we lose and they pip us to 4th and we end up 5th and they win the Champions league.

or...

We beat them and they get knocked out of the Champions league :D

I'm sorry but I hate this "we gave it our best shot" "old college try" "best season on record" bullsh*t. The truth is that the teams above us and Arse*nal are the worst they have been in years. This is our opportunity to capitalize and a rare one it is too. We should have beaten or tied all of these teams if only we could bury the sitters from six yards out and not give up schoolboy goals like yesterday.
If you look at Boro' & Bolton last year, UEFA cup football did not attract any superstars to them. The best players want to compete at the highest levels and to get them we need the C/L.
My frustration isn't born from the fact that I think we're not good enough, we're proving we are. Why then should we be happy with fifth. If we had all of the points we literally threw away we could sitting back watching the gooners freak out. The players and the fans should adopt a winning mentality and neither should be content with the boobie prize.

who's content with a boobie prize? im not! european footy was the aim this season and we have it. no-one should be complaining and certainly shouldnt be lambasting others for being pleased with this season and the way its gone so far.

i think you've misinterpreted my statement. im not saying we gave it our best shot and we should be happy with second best. in fact, i felt 4th was a possible aim for us this season and i was called unrealistic by many on 606. howver, in that same breath, i stated that anywhere in the top 5 would be success for spurs.

we are only 4th cos arsenal have underacheived. howver, we deserve it now but we are still some way off being a TOP team! missing sitters and schoolboy errors prove this. the spurs still lack the extra 'something' to hit the big time. therefore, if we only finish 5th i'll still be totally overjoyed.

neither boro or bolton attracted top stars cos the top stars have never heard of them, simply, they are small, crappy clubs!!!

to rise from 14th to 9th to 5th within two seasons is excellent progress and martin jol has outperformed mourinho & benitez in his league acheivements in terms of position progression.

apologies if you thought this was a personal attack. I believe opportunities should be taken. The bar will be very high next season thus our recruitment in the off season is crucial. your quote about boro & bolton being crappy teams only highlights how sorry our situation has been over the years. both of these "crappy" teams have acheived more. i know we both want the same thing, i just want mediocraty to no longer be a part of the culture at this club. i really have nightmares about becoming premiership plodders once more. i've enjoyed this season too much for that i'm sure you have too.

Given our inability to win a game convincingly, I would not be too quick to see us in Champions League next season. Europe is very much like the Premier League, teams need to gain experience before competing at the top level. I think the side is generally too young to have a serious go at the Champions League next season, although it's obviously a great way to learn. You only need to look at Everton and the appaling impact the Champions Laegue had on thier first six months to see it's not all roses. I'm convinced the best thing for the club is to spend a season or two learning European football in the UEFA before graduating to Champions League football.

Having said all this, I genuinely believe we are the only team (other than the scum) to be set up for European football with no real need to change the way we play from Saturday to mid-week, possesion being the key to European success.

4th would be great! But are we ready? Seriously?
5th would be OK if the Arse were 6th and got knocked out of the CL.:p

I've said it before, we may do well in the UEFA cup and it'll be great experience for next season and then we can go for CL.

What a change even being able to discuss the topic of Euro footy!:D

We can start the discussion now, as far as I can see we've almost guarenteed our UEFA spot at least?! I'm already thinking about away trips to dodgy former Eastern Bloc countries and their nubile women folk, cheap beer and fine beaches:D

oh for sure and i cant wait for next season. in fact, ive been saying that since christmas. i always felt this would be a key season where we fly or burn and that it would actually be the platform for real success next term. weve consolidated our top5 place and i think this will help the team make another progression next season and move up to a new level.

european football of any sort would help this and obviously CL would increase the rate of progression, i hope. what worries me is that we do an everton, but somehow, i doubt that (cos they where crap last year).

i dont think the spurs tide can be stopped now, even if we fail to clinch 4th. two or three KEY acquisitions will take us up to a new level and one of those has to a clinical finisher (van nistelrooy or kuyt would be perfect), a left-sided aaron lennon and some defensive cover.

when i say cover, i mean a versatile bench warmer as i believe both lee and stalteri will show real enterprise next season after bedding in this season. ive been told that trabelsi is a done deal which would be sweet indeed, so maybe a bit of CL experience to replace the excellent but ageing naybet, wouldnt go amiss to cover suspensions and injuries.

no matter where we finish this season, i'll make a bold prediction for next...3rd or 2nd ;)

Yep! Spot on! Look at the table - Bolton need a maximum 12 points from 4 games AND us to lose all 3, it's not going to happen!

We're already (almost, touch wood) in the UEFA Cup. The difference between 5th or 6th means nothing! If we don't get 4th, I don't care if Blackburn finish above us to be honest. Let's get that draw at ARSE and then see what we feel like. If we don't get in the Champs League now, we're not guaranteed it next season. In fact I won't be confident! There are still 4 better teams than us in the Prem (and that hurts to say).

If we get knocked out of the Champs League at the first stage, then we'll be in the UEFA Cup anyway so what's the point in hoping we only reach that competition?!?

Come on Villareal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think 5th is ok given the position we are currently in. It doesnt matter how the other teams have done, people talkin bout arsenal havin a bad season, its SPURS im concerned about, and 4th is a realistic albeit overdue target. Even if the A**E win the champions league and we finsih fourth, there's pride in being able to say, as the table doesn't lie, that we are the fourth best team in england while finally being higher than the g**ners at long last! We should have helped the cause by drawing last weekend, but it's in the past and we have to make sure we do not allow arsenal to win this weekend, then, it's all down to us and it feels great to finally be able to say so. F*** the cynics, the future is bright and i'm sure that even though we'd be devastated to finish above arsenal and lose out on CL because of their fortunes, at least we finished above them...and lets look forward to next season! Come on, we're tryin to break into the elite, there's always pride at stake and I would be personally gutted if we finished 6th. Gutted. People talk about the big 4 (Chelski, United, Liverpool, A****al), I am hopin that after this season and next season's (hopeful) progression that we'll be part of the big 5 in england, and a mainstay, where this massive club belongs.

Greed is good , at least in terms of winning every game and playing in the elite competitions. We should be doing everything we can to get that 4th spot, and I'm pretty sure that MJ will be disappointed if we dont get it. Who wants to sit at the kids table at a wedding?

That said at the start of the season I'd have bitten your hand of for UEFA cup football, so if we do only get 5th or 6th will I be dissapointed? Yes , for about a week then I'll remember what we have achieved (We are about 18months ahead of where I thought we'd be) then a big smile will come back as I look forward to playing Dukla Gherkin and Sparta Hampster and winning in Europe again.

We cant really lose , I love that the conversation at the end of this season is about WHICH european competition we will be in next year , not the normal we had a sh*t season , but next year ....

I think we deserve 4th spot having been in the top 6 all season, but 5th will do. As i said somewhere else, when you haven't qualified for Europe via the league for 23 years, any european spot is a massive step up.

5th will do but when we have been 4th for months it will be horrible to lose it in the last 3 matches especially to arsenal. Whatever happens we have shown great improvement and it will only get better
