Barclays Premier League - 28th Nov 2010 - KO 16:00 - White Hart Lane
On the back of an excellent 7 days for Spurs, we play host to rebuilding Liverpool on Sunday. Hodgson's new regime has shown signs of recovery with the return to fitness and form of 'Nando Torres, but are still failing to convince on occasion. Important wins over Chelsea and West Ham in recent games are in stark contrast to inert defeats to Stoke, so there are still big questions over their resolve away from home.
We are still missing key players in midfield with Huddlestone and Van Der Vaart, but with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale we still have match winning and in form stars, especially with Jermaine Defoe likely to make his first start for us since his injury. Palacios looks like he's slowly returning to form, but personally I'd like to see the improving Jenas alongside Modric in the centre of midfield, with Crouchy joining JD up front in a 4-4-2.
Mostly because Pav seems to be going through a little bit of a dip in confidence, and Palacios doesn't offer much creatively or show for the ball as much as JJ. This way the 3 units won't get linked up and we'll be forced to go long for Crouch all day long. JJ and Modric together at least offer that dynamism. Not on the same level as Tom and Rafael do naturally but it's the next best thing.
If we're struggling to create much more than long ball > knock down > shoot and getting frustrated we could always bring a player like Crouch off and bring Niko on in the hole and try to break them down that way.

I sense a draw for some reason, I don't think Pool will have a great side against us but with Torres and Kuyt they can hurt us for sure. An early goal would do wonders for us, I can see G Johnson being exposed by Bale.
Hopefully Crouch and Defoe can win us the game, we need to be ruthless against sides who have a big name in football but not a great team.
Who wants to step up to the plate? Crouch? Defoe? Lennon? We should be refreshed and raring to go on Sunday at home, no excuses IMO.

No Gerrard should give our midfield a less difficult game than it could have been. I fancy Benni to give Kuyt a real battle, and as you say Bale is going to tear the defensive black hole that is Glen Johnson a new one. It's all about how well Gallas and Kaboul can handle Torres int he end, a one man front line on his day.
Oh how I'd love to see him playing for us in front of VDV!

How great is Torres? Surely last season at Liverpool? Our defence will have to be solid because Torres is a match winner and can score against any defence in the world.
But Liverpool aren't all pulling in the right direction, they don't have a great team and defensively I believe we can ask them more questions. A win would be massive psychologically especially for our title aspirations, the higher we aim for the easier it will be finishing fourth.
Fingers crossed.

i thought that aswell. will jj be back after his knock against bremen?
gallas and kaboul will need to be strong and keep torres quiet. bale should pin johnson back so liverpool wont have as many oppurtunities attacking wise as they would normally. kuyt vs benni will be another big battle.

I suppose Palacios in for Jenas if needs be. In that case I'm concerned about how creative we can be then. I'd consider going to my backup formation as the starting lineup:

For me this is a huge game. While I dont need to go into how significant the derby victory was, derby' can throw up results like that. But a win against Liverpool will set us up perfectly for the xmas period. If we can be on top form; winning games and playing with confidence going in to the busiest period of the season then that would be perfect as the games come thick and fast.
Not that I think we are genuinely in this season's title race, we certainly arent out of it. If we were there or thereabouts after the xmas period then we have an excellent opportunity to cement our status as a top 4 club (which for is the priority).
With this in mind and the fact that we are at home, I think w should rest VDV (he does seem to be carrying something so he needs to be managed) and JJ, go 4-4-2 and attack them. My line up would be:
------------Gomes------------
Hutton---Gallas---Kaboul---BAE
Lennon--Palacios--Modric--Bale
--------Crouch---Defoe--------
Bench: Cudicini, Corluka, Bassong, Bentley, Kranjcar, VDV, Pavlyuchenko
I do fancy us to win this game, but I also fancy Kuyt to score as he always seems to against us.

Like Turkish I agree with everything in this quote including the team line up. Concerned at our inability to put together a winning run but we need the 3 points to keep in contact with the top 4. Need to score first as I cannot see us winning from 1-0 down in this match. Do not expect Defoe to last 90 mins but with need to score first prefer to start him. Hope that wednesday was turning point for Palacios who I thought had a good game.

I think Highlander's line up is spot on. I'm not sure if VDV is going to be able to feature, but if he does, we need to play him. The game is at WHL after all.
A win is going to be very important, it takes us to 5th place, 1 point behind City and it would going to open up some breathing space between us and Liverpool.

Not often we all seem to agree with the best line up but we certainly do for this game. I think the pace of Bale, Lennon & Defoe should cause Liverpool all sorts of problems as none of their defenders or midfielders look particularly quick (Johnson being the possible exception). Defoe against Carragher! Bring it on!

At risk of breaking the mutual and rare THFCTalk harmony, can I suggest that those midfield pair run the risk of being isolated from the other two central units, as there's no one who can show for ball at either end and link them both up. For example, Palacios is just the destroyer, and Modric is actually a much deeper player than people realise, not the VDV like attacking force. I think that given the lack of JJ and VDV we would be better with Niko in behind JD to offer that free role that we genuinely seem to getting used to.
Just my thought. Carry on...

Amateurish defending in that last 5 mins of the half.Palacios has been shockingly bad and we are not creating enough, which is why it was vital that JD should have taken the chance that fell to him.We have looked vulnerable to the counter attack all game.
The only positive is that Liverpool have 3 players on yellow cards,so surely to God the tactics must be to lure them into making a rash challenge and getting them sent off.But at the moment I wouldn't even fancy our chances against 10 men or even 9 men.

Well, we are hurt that our only playmaker out there is Modric. And he is having to spend too much time defending and covering for Wilson's mistakes. To get something out of this game, Lennon and Bale will have to take over, they are going to have to run at their defenders and try to get the ball to Defoe and Crouch. I don't see us getting a goal any other way, and Defoe was way too wasteful with his effort.
If we are still down at the 60 minute mark, I would think about sending in Niko for Palacios. Get another creative fulcrum in there to try to make something happen. As much as I desperately want to be rid of Palacios, I'm not sure if I want to risk that change just yet. Hopefully Harry can get the boys refocused at half time and we will come out and attack Konchesky.

Defoe has looked impotent in front of goal, and Crouch is still providing good hold up play and defends well on set pieces.

Great game but Lennon needs to get in the game more. Palacios is slightly better this half, but passing is terrible.

I think we also stopped getting the ball to Lennon. We've been giving Bale the chance to run down his flank, but more and more it's been Hutton getting the ball in those positions on the right.
Maybe Bale and Lennon should switch sides, give Lennon more room, and let Bale attack Konchesky.

Seems Harry was happy with a draw, I have no idea why that has been the case. This game is there for the taking but we are sitting with a sub unused...

Can't believe it, Lennon could have had two even though he had a quiet game. Amazing, once again we come from a goal down (a silly goal) and show real heart and fight.
Why can't we achieve something this year? We still have Dawson, King, Hudd to all come back. Plus Lennon hasn't even got out of second gear all season.
Fantastic win, triffic bouncebackability shown once again.

No excuse for the pen miss, but Defoe has been out for a while and we can't expect miracles. Him and Crouch worked hard.

A fantastic result but far from a fantastic performance.Liverpool should have really been 2 or 3 goals out of sight but for their wasteful finishing. But the old cliche is that it's the sign of a good team who can play badly and still win.
Palacios was better in the second half although it would have taken something supernaturally bad for him to have played worse than than the first half.JD was off the boil not surprisingly but Modric was our man today.
Sometimes you just have to grind out a result but it seems that we are too often having to battle back from a goal down.Let's enjoy it while our luck is still holding out.
But in the space of 8 days we have had massive league wins over Arsenal and Liverpool and sealed our qualification from the group stages of the CL.It's not perfect at the moment but our best this season is still to come.

Haven't jumped out of my seat like that since ?????........... Well since last week actually .
What a win . I felt sorry for luka a bit playing with palacios and being scared to pass to him . I really like Wilson I would really love for him to get back to his best. That would give us a further boost.

Cracking game that, full of incident. We just plugged away and eventually broke them down. Modric was superlative, Gallas imperious, and Bassong really impressed me as well.
Great, tough, hard fought win.

Another fantastic comeback, we might have won ugly but three points gained. MOTM Gallarse, well deserved. Shame Palacios still not found his form. COYS.

good performance in the sense that we worked really hard to get the 2 goals and fought tooth and nail for everything.
not sure how wp cant pass 5 yards. he could do it on wednesday but seems to have have forgotten that by sunday.
thought defoe didnt have the same sharpness that he normally does and resulted in him having an off game. think he should have gone off for pav after 80 mins.
next up birmingham away and we all know that will be a difficult game.

Modric is an absolute genius. He was basically playing on his own in the middle in the second half and he orchestrated everything, and even managed to help out with defending aswell. I absolutely love that guy. Huge sigh of relief mainly thanks to him.
Defoe you stupid prick, stop f*cking taking f*cking penalties - how many more will you waste before you stop?

You are right. Every time he takes one I think he's going to miss! worrying thing is that nobody else seems to want to take them. Bale in midweek was looking round waiting for someone else to take it but nobody wanted it. Hope we don't end up in a penalty shoot out any time soon!

This, this, this - a MILLION times this. Luka was sensational.

I didn't think we played very well today, and I think that was due to losing VDV when we did and the ineptitude of Wilson. Its a shame about Wilson, but he's just not good enough anymore, the club has moved up a level and he's been left behind. His stray passing was destroying every attack we made in the first half, it was only in the second, when Luka almost stopped passing to him entirely that we made in-roads into the Liverpool box.
We didnt play well, but we won ugly and thats what the good teams do.

When Wilson was so important to us, he wasn't playing like this. We know he can do better, and so does Harry. I understand wanting to get him back to his best, if he does, that is a very valuable weapon for us to have. We need a 3rd quality CM. Sandro could be that in another year or two (hopefully sooner). O'Hara is the forgotten man, he should be back soon and may be a very useful partner back there with Modric.
I'm happy we got the win, but I think we played poorly, and if we want to be good, we have to stop giving up the first goal. Good teams don't do that, and if we want to be top 4 again, let alone push for the title, we have to stop being so sloppy. We picked up 2 valuable points on Chelsea and City today, we need to keep the momentum going forward and keep picking up points.
