I've gone draw, because I've learnt to be pessimistic this season.

But if we start with the same lineup as Wednesday and combine the attitude of VDV with the teamwork of the second half, we should be doing well.

becoming a little pessemistc myself, though still think VDV and Bale will cut them open.

Just had a look at Lawro's predictions lol he got 9 out of 10 wrong last week with no perfect scores! the only result he got right was the pikeys! though based on that if he can atleast get the Spurs results right, he has us down for a 2-0 win tomorrow! I will go for 2-1 win.

A good win midweek should translate to a strong performance tomorrow. Unlike previous post-CL weeks, the opposition will be a reasonably strong force, and that should make a difference. 2-1.

If Crouch plays, 0-0, at best.
Pav or Keane play more than Crouch, Spurs win.

No way this team keeps a clean sheet. I'm guessing we play a 442.

Gomes

Hutton
King
Bassong
BAE

VDV
Huddlestone
Modric
Bale

Pav
Crouch

I'd like to see Jenas in there, he's done well and I'm sure he'll make an appearance at some point. Not sure on King's fitness level, otherwise we'd have to put Corluka at CB, SCARY!

Gomes; Hutton, Bassong, Huddlestone, Assou-Ekotto; van der Vaart, Jenas, Modric, Bale; Crouch, Pav.

Subs: Cudicini, Corluka, Kranjcar, Lennon, Palacios, Sandro, Keane.

Hudd at CB and Jenas in the centre with Modric. Crouch and Pav up front in a 4-4-2. Another very attacking side, but I can't help feeling either Palacios or Sandro would have been a better option than JJ.

:dito:

A bit of protection in front of Hudd/Bassong will be needed and keeping Young quite as the second striker. We will also definetely need to stem the flow to their wings with Albrighton and Downing who are both playing decent football at the moment. We need a Jenas game that lots here seem to see here, tireless work-rate breaking up play, pass it quickly to Modric and then let the real talented players take over.

Antilokhos
2nd October 2010, 01:33 PM
Not sure we'd really want Palacios there. With how poorly he's been playing and with a makeshift defense we don't need to give away a lot of free kicks. Sandro would not have been a bad choice, but I think Jenas' disciplined play is going to be quite useful.

Well, that goal was due, but Villa is probably due another goal or two from that half too. It seems odd that VDV is a much better header of the ball than our strikers (I'm looking at Pav's dismal effort from the same situation) and, even though VDV is the new guy, he seems by far to be the most fired up. From what I saw from a very bad stream, our biggest problem is ourselfs. Our passing and hold up play needs to be better, otherwise Villa will counter and look dangerous.

Get Bale in the game and make sure we get Albrington going the other way.

Apart from a silly mistake from Bassong (you should never lose the ball there as a defender) we haven't looked that bad.

We may not have had the luck as far as injuries are concerned but we sure have had the luck in terms of most of our results this season.

We seem to have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. Over recent years (before last season) we have seemed to always start really well and then fall to pieces as the games went on. Didn't we have a bout 5 or 6 results a few seasons back that saw last minute equalizers or winners for the opposition?

Yes we did go through a mad spell of last minute catastrophies.
But regarding our current situation and injuries notwithstanding,Harry seems to be badly mis-judging tactics and selections. The team will almost pick itself once everyone is fit but this is still the time for Harry to prove how good he really is.So far he has mostly been able to rectify the situation in the second half but our luck will run out sooner rather than later.

An important three points for us. I don't know if Bassong misses Dawson or what, but he has been awfully poor this season. Hopefully he, Palacios, and Lennon can all find their form soon and give us some much needed depth. I think there is hope for Lennon, after a rough start he looked a LOT better today. Still not the player of old, but much closer than he has been.

I was very impressed by Jenas today, he did everything that we could have asked. I've always liked him and am glad to see him playing well. He may not be the ferocious tackler that Palacios is, but he's been fantastic overall lately. If he could only start getting shots on target when he rushes into the box we'll be in business.

Modric and Bale were splendid as always. I think Bale drifted out of the game for a few stretches, but when we got him the ball he once again showed how dangerous he is. Modric combined well with everybody and definitely showed his class.

Our strikers were even pretty decent today. They missed some easy chances, but Crouch was instrumental in both goals and Pav's cross for the second was great. Both should shadow around VDV to learn how to properly score with their head.

And this was another game where Rafael Van der Vaart showed that he is a class above the rest of the squad. He plays with the most passion and the most skill, and he seems to be starting to rub off on the other guys. He's still settling in and I believe he leads us in goals in the league already. As the team gels around him I think we'll improve massively.

malc123
2nd October 2010, 04:19 PM
Very good result. Despite going behind and having to hang on at the end, I actually felt our play was more positive and unlike some of the recent matches, I had belief they would actually score. Looks like we are going to have to play 4411 all the time now. Even Lennon showed some sign of getting back to form and Palacious did not do anything stupid and passed to our team. I saw Harry giving Wilson some last minute instructions. ( Do not get booked, give away any stupid free kicks or penalties and try and pass it to one of our players when you get the ball) Lets hope we have turned the corner in the League.

Now it's over, that was a truly great result for us. Aston villa are no slouches are will trouble some top teams this season. Spurs are unpredictable but there is some quality football being played. They are starting to click and once they do, they are going to hammer someone good and proper. I know, I know there are questions about tactics, players etc but VDV is an amazing find, he is the best player I've seen in a spurs' shirt for some time and he brings a never say die attitude that lifts the place. Great game, proper crowd and it rained! That's what football is about!

didnt have time to make a pre mathc prediciton.

post match analysis was that the defending in the first half wasnt great, but not suprised as it was slightly make-shift.

did well to go in at HT 1-1. second half display was much better with vdv in the middle and lennon out wide.

thought the second goal was tremedous. the finesse of vdv's dummy was in a different class.

woah, woah...Bassong was at fault and it was embarrassing the way he got so easily out muscled...yes he should of provided cover but that justs wrong.....nobody in the ground expected that to happen, Bassong losing out like that.

Hudd is better at CB than Corluka for me and that was borne out yesterday. Of course he's much better in midfield though.

Bassong was definitely at fault, but Hudd gets an assist. He should have definitely at least moved to position himself between Heskey and the front of goal. And I'm talking after Heskey had already taken the ball, it seemed Hudd was still just ball watching as Heskey came in down the line.

Great turnaround... shame about conceding another cheap goal.

RVDV was a late entry into my wedding speech last night... as thanks for not letting Spurs ruin my big day :santaclaus:

woah, woah...Bassong was at fault and it was embarrassing the way he got so easily out muscled...yes he should of provided cover but that justs wrong.....nobody in the ground expected that to happen, Bassong losing out like that.

Hudd is better at CB than Corluka for me and that was borne out yesterday. Of course he's much better in midfield though.
did you see how many times Dunne was in the right place at the right time when the unexpected happend at the other end?
Granted he is a nailed on CB and OK maybe Hudd V Corluka is too close to call
Hudd could have and should have been much better positioned to cut the cross out, he was only a step to the left away but he never even tried to take that step and the ball rolled passed him, as soon as Heskey had gone towards the byline, Hudd should automatically of moved over to close the angle, the ball likely would not then have got passed him.
Yes Bassong should have been better in the first place and yes HUdd done very well in other scenarios so maybe Im focusing on this one a bit too much, but as it cost us a goal and at the time that was a big issue , he can certainly learn from it.

If Crouch plays, 0-0, at best.
Pav or Keane play more than Crouch, Spurs win.

Oh yeah he can learn from it all right...but Hudd aint a CB and he struggled in the air against Heskey and Carew when he came on. My point is Charlie seems to be even worse.

Didn't see the game or the higlights because I was too busy getting ruined in Nottingham this weekend. Would suggestions of VDV becoming a permanent forward be accepted?

Yes, think of it as 4-4-1-1....

One article I read today likened Rafael to the lovechild of Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles. Fair assessment?

VDV reminds me when Robbie Keane was bang in form and would play behind Berbatov. He would pop up everywhere, chase everything and score crackers.

The bloke has a great scoring record, he can play upfront for sure.

I had that thinking myself.

And the best thing about VDV is he doesn't come with a annoying dutch stalker called Van Chodawinkle.

Me too, but to be honest he's class above Keane - but he's class above most so thats no insult.

Dare I say it...he's similar to an inform Rooney as well. Well I mean they have similar attributes regarding work rate, vision, awareness and overall skill and ability.
