Hell yes. Although if I were in power I would give an 18 month suspended sentence.
If he gets yellow card ever again in his career, that is when the sentence becomes active.

Absolutely. There are big problems within the game in my view because some of the ways they deal with things are ridiculous.
It is also ridiculous to say he should be banned for life, he didn't pull out a knife, let's have some common sense here.
A 12 match ban is properly appropriate for an awful tackle like that, but of course since the ref dealt with him as he saw it on the pitch they'll probably have some crazy rule that they would be undermining the ref to go over his head.
They should have a tuesday commitee to look at the weeks talking points and see if they were appropriately punished, and then they could add more punishment or recind punishment. They don't need to dissect all incidents but just the blatent ones. This needs to be done to sort out diving and to deal properly with bad tackles etc.

The BBC said that the police are also looking into it. So he may be charged with a criminal offence.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that somebody can be charged with a criminal offense for something that happened on a football pitch. It was an awful tackle, it is for the games authorities to deal with. Why is everybody getting their knickers in a twist?
Well I know why actually it caught the attention of people because he was knocked out cold. If he'd have gotten up straight away it would just be deemed a dirty tackle and it would have been mentioned and then forgotten. He'd have gotten a ban from the fa and end of.
The same thing happened with Bowyer and Dyer. Fights break out between players all the time but because it was between two teamates it caught people's attention. Bowyer actually had to go to court over it... ****ing ridiculous.
The only time the police should be involved is if a player pulls out a knife and stabs another player. And that's the only time somebody should get a life ban aswell.
Thatcher deserves a 12 match ban, and progressively higher bans if he repeats it. That will stop him doing it.

1) dont think we should really call it a tackle , because it wasnt , it was a thug of a player taking another one out because pedro nutmegged him a few minutes earlier
2) agree the bowyer /dyer thing going to court was stupid , they were both as bad as each other , no harm done aprt from to the club and that is where any action should have been taken (and was if i remember rightly )this , i can only call it assault , was against an opposing player with a different outcome and totally unprovoked .

so if a player elbows another player ,thats sport???
say a player runs for the ball , ends up in the crowd and gets an elbow from the fans, is that sport too??
no one can expect the fans to behave themselves when they watch the players doing worse things and getting away with it (relatively speaking) and still being paid vast amounts of money and treated like demigods by the teams and other fans.
think the best thing to come out this world cup was that everyone finally seemed fed up with all forms of cheating, now the authorities have to deal severely with it all while the irons still hot

That's a shocking opinion. What Thatcher did was GBH. If someone came up to me an elbowed me the head running ****ing fast that would be as well. And if there is absolutely no sporting reason or cause as to why someone did something as bad as that then yea, it is a criminal offence. He was playing a game of football, but that sort of thing belongs no where near the field - not even saturday or sunday league have I seen something that bad, and i've seen some nasty stuff.

Duncan Ferguson got locked up for headbutting a player.
Why is this any different?

25th August 2006, 07:43 AM
He did the same a few years ago while playing for Wimbledon, he poleaxed a player using his elbow, he still has'nt learned the errors of his ways.
I called for a life long ban, nothing has changed my opinion he's done once, he'll do it again and again.
If he wants to fight that badly, he should go-out down to Manchester's Moss Side, i'm sure someone down there will oblige him.

First,I think the only reason a lot pf people go on about police involvement is because the FA time and again prove they havn't a clue about dealing out the correct discipline for incidents like this...I don't believe Thatcher meant to harm mendes to the extent he did, however he was reckless as to whether he did or not and that as we know is just as dangerous..it wasn't just an elbow it was a forearm smash with a definite movement of the arm.
Mendes could have died..or been left with serious health problems. The worst thing is that this isn't a one off incident involving thatcher..pre season his elbow on a players chest in the far east contributed to that player collapsing a lung!but the press didnt report it much here..then the attack on summerbee..and his horrible tackle on alan nielson v spurs.
The disgrace is that someone at the FA hasn't come out publicly and condemned this assault..even now they are busy trying to cover themselves legally...what a bunce of kippers(two faced and spineless)...Thatcher should be banned for a considerable time.
If not I hope someone puts him in hospital..

what the hell is ridiculous about it??? if it had happened anywhere else the police would of been involved. police get called into places of work everyday mate. just because footballers nowadays think they are above everyone else it don't mean they should get away with deliberately injuring someone. ban the prick!

The FA must make an example of him, whether the referee deemed it to be a red card or not, the video evidence is conclusive. A prison sentence would not surprise me, if they fine him, then it needs to be realistic, based on a Premiership wage.

So your over the park watching a sunday morning game and a fight breaks out between two players and you would want the local FA to sort it out because it's a 'game of football'
Only when one of the players go's to the kit box and gets the orange knife to stab the other player would you involve the police and courts
No wonder local football is dying on it's feet and no one wants to ref it.
What thatcher did was deliberate and he would have probably got away with a yellow card like he did if it were a 'park' game but he's been caught on film.
I'm just glad he's still not playing for us.

If it happened in Sunday League he would have been red carded and there would have been a mass brawl.
The difference here being that he was in the public eye, being watched by tens of thousands, including children, and he did what he did. He put a fellow players career at risk and he should get ****ed in every possible way.

Listen, we're talking about professional sport here not sunday league. I'm not thinking about sunday league, that is a different arguement.
Do you ever watch pro rugby? There are horror tackles, stamping etc. every game.
As for putting every workplace in the same category, you simply can't do that. These guys work in an environment of physicality, it is totally different. They play a sport and half of the game is a physical battle... and in the prem it is about 75% physical.
When the lions played the all blacks last year two kiwis did the most horrible tackle you'll ever see in your life on Brian O'Driscoll. It was pre meditated before the match. They turned him upside down and made him fall on his head. They wanted to put him in a wheelchair. That is a life ban tackle.
And kids are not stupid they see the condemnation that everyone has for an awful tackle, they see the punishment handed out and they know it was a bad tackle.
It is all about context, given Thatcher has a history and he also did it just a month ago and there is **** all provocation (a nutmeg) then he should get minimium 12 matches and maybe even the season. But no more, let's not go crazy. It is a man's game.

Rugby and football can never be compared. It would be like comparing basketball and netball, granted the aim is basically the same but they're entirely different games and the levels of physical contact are worlds apart.
Of course professional football is different to Sunday league, but at the end of the day these are guys who devote their lives to being in the best possible condition to do their jobs, and for someone to show absolutely no regard for that and to put a fellow players career and physical health in such danger, it's absolutely unacceptable.
They put themselves on at risk of being injured accidentally, not deliberately.
And i agree, it is a man's game, but Thatcher's actions weren't those of a real man.

I'm not comparing them directly, sorry I should have made that clearer, what I meant was that the police should not be involved in professional sport. There are physical sports and there are internal sanctions for those sports.
But if it is pre meditated before a match that two players are going to turn a guy upside down so he'll land on his head because they were trying to put him in a wheelchair... then that deserves a life ban in any sport.
Thatcher was cowardly, I said that already. I never claimed his actions were that of a real man. I also want him to be severely punished. But I'm just saying it is physical sport, it is a man's game so let's not go overboard.
He didn't randomly run up to a guy on the street and do it, he did it on a professional field of play in a very physical sport, it is not a police matter. Nor is it a life ban, it was an awful tackle but not one that deserves a life ban.
As I said before it is all about context, and he collapsed a guys lung a few weeks ago in China and there was **** all provocation (only a nutmeg) so he should get a lengthy ban maybe three months to six months. If he commits a similar tackle again and he's thirty years of age then it should certainly be on agenda that this guy never plays again.

that deserves alot more than just a life ban from sport. A pre meditated offence like that deserves criminal charges and a lengthly jail sentence whether it's on a sports field or not.

Yes, you're right about that. I forgot to add that. There is a line where the police have to become involved in pro sport.
But it has to be a very very very bad incident and even then it is something that has to be considered very carefully. Like Bowyer ending up in court over hand bags was so unbelievably ridiculous.
And I don't believe that they should become involved with Thatcher here either, as I've said I don't think it is a police matter, but the games authorites have to deal with it properly.
If they dont give him a lengthy ban and a severe warning he could commit an equally bad tackle again. It has to be clear that if he does it again he will get a ban so long (he's thirty now) that his career will be effectively over... or he might even get a life ban.
