Back in the day you had local born/ bred/raised players playing for both teams, theyd bleed blue blood in our case , and in scums case theyd just bleed to death hopefully :ciao:
Graham Roberts would be so up for giving someone a good ****ing kicking , hell even in the masters tournament a few years ago he was playing against scum old boys and he'd wiped out one of them totally on purpose and admitted so in interview after the match 'I still owed him !' he said.
Perryman, Mabbs.
Now who we have? King, Dawson and perhaps Defoe Id say would bleed blue , the rest ?
NOw you get johnny foreigner two season wonders playing, they have more Ouzo than blue in their blood, they have no real feeling for Spurs.
About 10 seasons ago I was working with some scum fans , horrible time , but they said openly that the NLD meant nothing to many gooners as they had the CL games and the 36 other league games to focus on to win the league and go far in the CL.
You dont get the fouls, you dont get the fights, and OK easier for me to say as I dont live near there now but does it really mean as much as it used to?
Its another game, a chance for 3 points or to progress in a cup if its important to you, yes beating them in a final would be better than beating Everton in same final, but we'd still only win the final .
I mean which would people prefer, beating Arsenal in all the games we play V them but underperforming on our seasons goals, or losing all NLD's in a season but overacheiving our seasons goals , and you cant say both cos thats too obvious, which is more important , one or the other .
Its like we have this neccesity to do better than Arsenal in a season . well being more realistic I was very happy finishing right behind them last season , if they finish 2nd this season id be very happy finishing 3rd

Completely agree with you. One thing will never go away though is the fans passion for the Derby (of any clubs), so debates and frustration will ensue after a match like last nights.
I think some of the foreign players understand the passion and importance of derby matches but as the game has become more global, the domestic game more expanded in Europe, rivalries have become more expanded.
We have put so much importance on beating thme because the gap between the two clubs grew so vast over the last 15 years. That gap has closed now considerably. There are different priorities.
I would certainly take this season two defeats against them this season, them finishing 2nd and us 3rd.

You are absolutely right on the point about the players. You would also expect it would mean less to the supporters now than it did years ago as supporters move out of the local area it becomes less of a 'local' derby for them. However, when you go to this game you realise what it still means to the supporters. The atmosphere for the Arsenal game is so different to any other & they are without doubt our biggest games of the season - i'd prefer us to beat them more than any other team.
However, the season is more important than the games against Arsenal so I'd settle for losing to them home & away if it meant finishing above them & in the top 4.

If we can finish top four every year and win a trophy every other season, then I will gladly lose both the NDL games. However at the moment we look like a one season wonder and are certainly getting ahead of ourselves by 'prioritising'.
Sky era and CL era rivalries are TV rivalries. The club that is geographically closest to you is always the true rival,no matter how much better one may be doing than the other and no matter how irrelevant the more successful supporter may claim it to be.

.
this sums it up perfrect for me, when George Graham was winning them titles for fun and we were utter shite, the NLD was THE only thing for us to play for as we were not going to have a better season than them.
Now theres a chance, a realistic chance we can , and some would say we have already by winning the CC while Arsenal only got top 4 and regular CL matches, and Im not debating that .
But for us now, games V other top 4 contenders should carry as much weight as the NLD.
But yeh I always tell the difference whether I was there or not of the fans atmosphere at NLD's , is there still the pure hatred now though, does it still go off somewhere afterwards or pre match or have they all grown up now :fight:

We are one season wonders, no ifs, no buts and will be until May 2011. Then we will see if the tag can be dropped. Judgement calls need to be made in a season we have not experienced in the modern game. Some might be right, some may be wrong.
Agree with last paragraph completely, my point being the rivalry for the core fans always remains but the game has changed and is different for the players now these days to some extent.

I would never, NEVER 'gladly' lose the NLD.
How can a spurs fan say that?

Would you rather win the league but lose home and away to Arsenal or would you rather beat them home & away but finish below them?

The former....but I wouldn't be GLAD to lose to them.

GS I'm going to mess with your emotional state even more.
I hated losing last night, was really upset but was far more embarrased, disappointed, annoyed and angered by the defeat by Wigan a few weeks ago where we dropped 3 uneccesary points in the league at home.

Yes, that was also hard to stomach, especially as I had to go to a BBQ full of Gooners straight after.
But no, I felt worse last night, the good name of our club had been brought into disrepute.

The fact is over many years that we rarely beat them in the league or finish above them. Finishing above them in the league IS beating them but we are inconsistant and have a better chance of beating them in a one of match like last year at WHL than finishing above them in the league. Both would be heaven.
For older fans finishing above them in the league was no big deal as it frequently happened and finishing say 8th when they were 12th meant nothing. However realistically now if we finish above them we are almost certainly going to be in the top 4.
The 5-1 league cup win was a great achievement even if then it was us with the stronger team against a reserve side. This defeat hurts more than if it was another team including other London teams.
