sure it'll be all over the news tonight but thatcher has elbowed pedro mendes in the city v pompey game. It's one of the most dispicable things i've ever seen in football. the commentators are all trying to dum it down while giving reports of mendes, now stretchered off motionless, has had a fit and been taken to hospital. Thatcher's forearm smash should be used as an example by the FA to remove this kind of unprovoked assaut from the game once and for all. I sincerely hope mendes will be ok.

Poor mendes was spark out while still sliding into the advertisment boards. Thatcher is a dirty f**ker and he should be banned for a long time. The question still remains, how did he stay on the pitch??????

it was awful. the ball had gone and there was no need to even challenge, not that he did, he never looked at the ball just his head. Then ran off leaving him sparko on the floor. throw him out of football for good.

NO1 deserves that kind of assault especially Mendes! Thatcher is dirty dick!

He also kicked Benjani in the head. Although that was an accident.
BTW what f*ckin game was the ref watching tonight? Mendes laid out, yellow card. Blantent handball by a city defender, nothing given. Hope he's not there on Saturday!

Saw it on MOTD, sickening elbow, Mendes looked like a rag doll.
What annoyed me was Thatcher bowling off afterwards thinking he'd just knocked out Mohammad Ali!

That was intent to do the guy some harm, absolutely shocking Thatcher should receive a life long ban no place for players like that on a football pitch

Life is a bit much, but it was a horrendous tackle. One of the worst I can remember. Awful. I'd give a 12 match ban for that.

i hope mendez recovers quickly , always liked him and seems he has found his niche at portsmouth .
i havnt seen the incident yet so cant really comment but sounds bad , and knowing thatcher the knob probably sees it as a way of leaving his mark , stamping his authority on the game which he cant do through skill, ive seen him try it before
i am sure we have all played agaisnt these types when we were younger , it takes the fun out of the game .
i guess as the ref has given the yellow card he will have to claim to have seen the incident , acted upon it therefore no further action can be taken against the prick.

It was an absolute horror challenge. He only had one thing in mind as he was running for the ball, and that was to take out Mendes.

Ben thatcher is A complete C**T. Sorry to be so blunt but he is a ****ing disgrace to football and an example should be made of him so we can eliminate the elbowing problem once and for all. I have no problem in players raising there arms when jumping for the ball but what happened last night was undefendable. Thatcher was guilty of a very similar gutless challenge on nicky summerbee in a wimbledon v sunderland game, i think summerbee had his jaw or cheekbone broken.
Im sure we all wish pedro a speedy recovery and lets hope that Ben thatcher gets what he deserves which will probably be nothing from the FA as he was booked for the challenge, meaning that the issue has been dealt with(another quality ruling by the FA).

The FA have just announced that they're going to look into the incident. Lets hope they ban him..for a long time.

here it is, the diff angles make it worse. watch mendes on the first one, he's just kicking the ball out, thatcher doesn't even look at it.

Watching that incident on Sky from about 5 angles it clearly shows he was going for Mendes and took him out on purpose. I understand Stuart Pearce trying to defend his player but in this case there simply is no defence.
Also, the game is leaving the F.A., FIFA, UEFA etc for dead and they need to get up to speed with what is going on in the game before and not after the event.
Take the world cup, the USA were seeded in the top 10, above Argentina and they are pants. Thankfully, even though it is after the event, the rankings are now changing to reflect teams correctly.
As for this Thatcher incident and the F.A. saying nothing can be done because he has already been punished with a yellow card. Then bloody well change the rules! If we had seen that on CCTV in the highstreet Thatcher would have been locked up for assault.
As Harry said, how the hell can you get a yellow card for pulling your shirt up over your head when you score a goal and have the same for assault? Then, they ban Rooney for 3 games for playing in a friendly tournament. It is a total joke and I hope the F.A. actually do something big this time, like 10 game ban (yeah right).
Right, I'm off to kill someone and then get caught for speeding home because once they have punished me for that, surely they cannot charge me with murder too :D

That really is shocking. Had that been me running up behind and it happened to my teammate I would have to smash the****ing shit out of the one who did it - that would be in any level of the game. That truly is sick.

It seems to get worse everytime i see it, i think i better turn Sky Sports news off!! I honestly cant see why the portsmouth players didnt rip his ****ing head off, that elbow could have could severe long term damage.

I thought stuart pearce was a good guy, a REAL football man, but mostly a decent man. He actually defended Ben Thatcher, even having seen the footage!!
He's gone down in my estimation.

Have to defend your team in public, 1st rule of management. Slate them in private, defend them in public - remember Sven? Only ever slated his team to undercover reporters dressed as Arabs...

Shouldn't matter. Do you think Jol would defend one of our guys if they did that?
No chance.

Sorry Tom i cant agree with that. Defend them when they do something that you genuinly believe is unfortunate, mistimed, unlucky. This was assault, it could have not only ended his career but possibly his life. I agree with the poster before me, there is no way that MJ would stand for that.

Not really the same thing. In our game we carried on playing when a player was faking injury to exploit the gentleman's rules of the game.
Yesterday was a flat out assault. No manager in the world should ever even try to defend that kind of behaviour.

Completely agree. What Thatcher did has no place anywhere yet alone a football pitch. Headlines keep saying 'Thatcher FOUL'....What the **** is that? A Foul? It wasn't a ****ing foul, it was plain and simple assault. The cops are involved now and rightly so. I hope the nasty little **** gets locked up for a bit, hes done this sort of thing before maybe that'll teach him a lesson.
It's still unbelievable, I mean he raised his arm just as he gets to him as well. He had no thought except to take him out. And if I was Pearce, I'd fine him as much as I was allowed.

Yeah, i remember watching him 2 foot Allan Nielsen when he played against us before.
He's a real nasty shit.
You would hope that Pearce would have the bottle to fine or ban him, but i know he won't.
Here's to hoping he gets locked up.

im seriously surprised the pompey fans didnt jump over and kick thatchers head in, they dont normally need an excuse .
a ref, two assistants and a 4th official and they still get it wrong.
the fa will treat this as an excpetional case, theyve already said this, he will get done, they are getting tough as per Rooneys friendly ban ,
thats the worse thing ive seen since that french poof cantona jumped into the crowd (i cant belive the other fans didnt kick the shit out of him then either (wouldnt you if hed jumped into the WHL crowd and kicked your neighbour), its a free for all if he chose to jump in there)

thatcher is a BASTARD for what he did and the ref is a bastard too . with the intent he (thatcher) went in with if he had caught pedro in the eye or temple it would have been even more horific.
some one should do the same to him ,if you like to give it you should be able to take it .

just seen it and was worse than i thought it could be .
to be fair have looked at the man city fan forum and they are all seemingly appalled by it , with calls of a ban or sacking predominant .
as said by others if stuart pearce has seen this and still backs thatcher then i loose a lot of respect for someone i always thought played the game hard but fair .
