My bets for us today are:

Jenas out to Stoke or somewhere..Muntari in.

Hutton out on loan.

Obviously the Croatian keeper on loan.

I give up. We need a world class striker and the only mention we have on SSN is for Steven Pienaar.

Another 9 months of Crouch/Defoe it is then...

At this rate its looking like Parker and possibly Cardozo....

The latest and quickly building ITK is Cardozo who we have linked with all summer but obviously is a third, or fourth choice in terms of a target. He is the only realistic choice left I reckon, as he has been well scouted. At least he is a number 9 though.

Parker could well happen, I think those two are only realistic incomings today.

All the ITK I've read this summer has amounted to precisley bobbins. I'm not even reading it anymore. I'll just check SSN and see what the score is come 6pm.

True, but it doesn't mean that all of the information was off the mark. Just remember the salt.

We are clearly trying to do some business but it has to be on the right terms for us, something Levy wont deviate from and I fully support him on that.

Exactly how I feel, we've been linked with every tom dick and arry and here we are again with hours left till the end and what have we got....an extremely pissed off Keane who knows he's not wanted, Defoe with dodgy bollocks, Crouch who can't keep his dick in his pants and Pav who would be better off doing comparethemerkat adverts.................fvck I'm pissed off.

Ollie via text: "Scott Parker's at Spurs Lodge. Not my eyes but from a good source. And any takers on Oscar Cardozo? Daniel levy is sorting that one out as we speak. Oh - Jermaine Jenas has turned down a move to Stoke

Can't see anything being done to be honest apart from our new keeper.

Would be happy with just Parker at this stage. Really thought we'd be in for a top quality striker but their not easy to get these days I guess.

Jesus Christ. If we sign Babel I might just give up and succumb to that temptation that's niggled at the back of my mind for ten years: "F*ck it, just get down to JJB and buy a United shirt like everyone else, in a few years you'll forget you ever supported Spurs" :001_rolleyes:

Trying to take Babel on loan, according to Roger Morgan. Can't see that being entertained, and it's not the sort of player fans were looking to join.

Being trying to get on SO for hours and it's overloaded, SC has just close due to the samel. Anyone know if Coys is the same?

Right, I know you're young (in relative terms to me anyway :frown:) and we all go through those "what's the point?" phases as Spurs supporters as we mature, but take a good long look in the mirror, imagine yourself wearing that red filth, slap yourself about the face a few times, then return to your senses.

And never repeat such blasphemy again!! :fight:

Oh it's too late for me now. I'm in and there's no way out, no amount of prawn sandwhiches will change that. But wouldn't it just be so much easier and nicer to be a United fan....

I like being a Scvnthorpe fan as well, nice community club, small fan base, no pressure or expectations, bit of history but nothing to go crazy about. Nice.

Let's put it in perspective though, imagine being a Leeds or Nottm Forest fan 8 years ago... now that's worth giving up for!

BBC Deadline Day live,

If he's not good enough for those scouse tits he's not good enough for us.

Babel looks like the only possible incoming player and even that now looks unlikely as West Ham will need another striker if they accept Pool's offer for Cole.

I would be stunned if we sign anybody now, I think thats it. All in all a very underwhelming window - down to the flat market.

So true! Its typically spurs style! We have got Keane, Crouchy, Defoe and Pav, why the fvck we need Cardozo? He is on the same level with them. Im always looking forward to this days and it alsways ends up in a shit day. I'm a bit annoyed tbh. We hear names like rossi, Fabiano, KJH and in the end it will be Cardozo, Pienaar or Babel. Rather sign no1, than one of the three. Well now we playing Champions League and we are going another year with Crouch and Defoe. Well done

But there's no need wasting money if your top targets aren't gonna come. Not much movement in the window and if we don't bring anyone in we will have to hang on till Jan.

I've never been a fan of Crouch and the Wigan game proved his limitations. But he is great away from home against sides who like to bully us. I think Harry picked the wrong team in Saturday, he needs to play players who want the ball at home and who won't be intimidated by the crowd.

Players like Forlan, Suarez, Fabiano ect would have been pefect for us especially the two Uruguay lads who love the ball into their feet.

Harry needs to be flexible, we don't have many footballers in the squad but in hindsight Keane, JJ and Niko should have started or played a part.

Gino Ginelli
31st August 2010, 02:27 PM

No big outs either though I notice. No exits for JJ, O'Hara etc. Is the market that shite?

its all bollocks anyway, the best teams have done the deals way before deadline day, if youre still seriously trying to sew up a deal in the last 24 hours then youre shit, unless of course someone suddenly becomes free as a result of something else going on .

JOH injured until Jan, had an operation on his back, so wouldn't pass a medical. JJ supposedly not interested in a loan to Stoke.

Expect Naughton could be a late loan, but it is surprising that the only squad out has so far been Taarabt.

Not Spurs related, but WTF is this?!

Martin O'Neill is being brought in to replace the outbound David Moyes at Everton. Moyes will make Mikel Arteta his first signing as the new Aston Villa boss.

Gudjohnsen at Stoke and about to sign.

Babel seems to be going to either Wham or us. Ineligible for CL so that wouldn't make a difference, but he should be thinking that one of those clubs could be bottom of the league with null points after 6 games.

This is a disgrace!! We've failed yet again to gain vital strength in a key area of the squad!!

Oh well, I guess we'll just have to make do with the squad we have, who are only good enough to get... fourth... place...

In all seriousness we have strengthened, with Gallas and Sandro but would loved a world class number 9 but with the way the market is these guys dont grow on trees unfortunately.

I know, it makes a bloody mockery of everyone else's cagey approach to the window when they can just go do that. They've probably gone and upgraded on each key position and can make a serious push this season. Although their result against Sunderland would suggest they are capable of the same bollocks we are...

But yeah, Gallas is definately strengthening our defence, Sandro will be an upgrade on Palacios. It's not too shabby is it?

Put it this way, at least we weren't as bad as Man Utd and went and signed the wrong player again...

Gino Ginelli

Right, I'm off home. Hopefully in the half hour it takes me we'll pull a miracle signing of Luis Suarez and Sully Muntari in the dying seconds in exchange for Jermaine Jenas and a bag of pork scratchings.

earl warwick
31st August 2010, 05:11 PM
I bet VDV's been there since yesterday, possibly in a secluded room, all pre-arranged with Sky. Mainly Spurs stories again today - Pienaar, Pienaar with Keane included, Babel in a helicopter, then Babel's helicopter going to Wham, but then a big fight between Wham and Spurs, then Babel's getting a train back, 5 mins to go, last minute Dutch international, go for a break, VDV!!!!

Completely pre-planned.

3 phones. They obviously realised they couldn't kid anyone with the complete lack of transfer activity. Discount City, and it's at about a quarter of the level of 2 years ago.

Sky: Harry, what's happening with VDV? We know he's here.

H: Who? The Madrid boy? Where do these stories come from? I thought it was April Fools! I've been watching a practice game, there's no Dutch internationals here. The chairman gave Madrid a ring last week but nothing doing, they wanted 25m for him, ridiculous.

On an slightly related Spurs topic, how the **** is Gyan worth £13m, when Bent, proven 1 in 2 games scorer, was only £10m? I know there are add-ons, but Gyan is a massive risk. Less than half that fee for me.

Mind you, I thought Bent was a better buy than Torres, based on Torres's record in Spain, and seeing how Morientes, who looked a sound choice, had disappointed.

Whatever way you cut it, its pretty incredibile business for a player who was strutting his stuff for one of, if not the, biggest Clubs in the world and is fresh out of a WC final - and its not like he's in his thirties, he's 27 and entering his peak. A fantastic age, loads of experience and still has plenty of years infront of him.

From the Beeb:

1953: Those Harry Redknapp quotes for you, then: "It (The Rafael van der Vaart deal) is still dragging on. We have been trying to do something but we are waiting to see if it has all gone through and we are hoping it has. It's something to do with clearance. I think he was going to Bayern Munich yesterday for £18m and suddenly he became much cheaper. They let me know around 1600 BST that he was available for £8m and for that money he is a top player who will definitely improve us. The fee has come crashing down because the deadline is so close. He's a great passer of the ball, he's a top footballer, he will join in here and be a big plus for us. We were also interested in Ryan Babel, he was a player we made an enquiry about but it never came close."

Probably more to do with Jose and Madrid. Possibly the one instance where CL football has made a difference to the player, since he is eligible, and left Hamburg for Madrid because he could have the chance of CL.

Fine, but the real question is: Why leave everything to the last moment?

The fee isn't the question. Madrid have got their money back, they wouldn't have expected anything like £18m. Jose knew the players he wanted to keep (Diarra a possible exception), since he has Gago, M Diarra and Gago to line up alongside Alonso. Also Pepe if he was desperate.

Where would VDV be likely to feature in a centre where Kaka, Canizares, and Ozil are available? The answer is nowhere. I expected VDV to end up at Bremen or elsewhere in Germany.

A real coup for us. The player to replace Modric, or line up in a 4-5-1 alongside, or in the centre with Hudd with Modric left and Bale LB.

A little info from roger morgan on spurs odd:
Been told that legally the Premier League would be on dodgy ground halting this move. Apparently their side of the operation was less than efficient and they were deluged, as they always are, by paperwork at window time. Loads of clubs had trouble getting paperwork confirmation from League. It has nothing to do with the FA by the way, this is a Premier League and FIFA operation. On Monday, I'm told the PL didn't even staff up their offices for the Bank Holiday. I'm told the deal should be sanctioned tomorrow. There may be some sort of statement urging clubs not to push it. But we should remember that the Premier League is there to facilitate the signing of good players to their League. They are not there to quibble over a delay of a few minutes caused by a logjam of paperwork.

Well, that's my five penn'orth

I think it will go through, and it's a great signing. BUT, it's not what was needed. We desperately need a top quality striker, and we know that's not something we could pick up on the cheap. We did not address our needs, so I think this was a failed transfer window for us.

I am delighted to have Van der Vaart coming, a fantastic signing and I have no doubt he's going to help make us a better team. But I don't think he's going to get the goals that we need.

We needed a defender, we brought in Gallas.

We needed a creative midfielder who could score, create goals and improve our squad. We got that in VDV.

Sandro could turn out to be a cracking buy, fingers crossed he does the buisness.

How many strikers out there that would improve us? Fabiano didn't want to join, then he did and Sevilla kept fvcking around with the price. 25m for Fab who has a 1 year left on his contract? No way pedro.

Harry isn't stupid he tried for a striker, but he couldn't get his top targets. Maybe a blessing in disguise, a player could come available in Jan and the rest is history.

You are assuming that we are still competitive in January. We needed to build on last season and we didn't, we've mostly stayed still. Gallas is pretty much a straight swap for Woodgate, Sandro is unlikely to impact given how young he is.

Yes, Van der Vaart is a very nice player to have, and we seem to have gotten him at a good price. But midfield was the one part of the squad that didn't need addressed so it seems a bit silly that our big signing was there.

I agree about the striker, but disagree strongly that he is unliley to get us goals. Have you seen his stats...its something like 93 goals in 240 odd games.

The one thing we have lacked for years is a goal scoring midfielder and when the strikers dont turn up we have no answer for goals. We couldn't get a top notch striker this window, another solution is to go for a top class attacking midfielder who has a fantastic goal return.

Modric wont get the goals from playing in behind, VDV will.

It did need addressed, we dont get enough goals from there - its another way to get more goals if you cant upgrade a striker, which is difficult. Playing a 4-5-1 will allow us to use Modric and VDV, particularly away in Europe.

Woodgate played a handful of games last season, so its not like he played any real part in getting us fourth last season. Gallas and VDV bring a wealth of experience and quality to this squad. Sandro could be ready before many think.

Sorry that is not standing still, couldn't disagree more.

Not a bad deadline day, typical last gasp nonsense from us. You wait around for ages with the Fabiano's, and the Parker's and the what not. And then 5 mins from time, up pops Van Der Vaart! Mental.

Always got the feeling Mourinho liked us. Still want him as Spurs manager when he get's booted out of Real and Harry's had enough. I think he'd enjoy it here.

Anyway, decent enough transfer window considering the flatness of the market. Experienced replacement for Woody in Gallas, upgrade on Wilson and Jenas in Sandro, good goalkeeper backup in Pletikosa, and a World Cup finalist playmaker in Rafael Van Der Vaart who is comparable to David Silva (who cost City over £20m), upgrades on Krancjar/Keane/JJ in one fell swoop! All for under £20m, and two of them were free!

Yeah we coukld have done with trading in one underperforming striker for a prolific one, but it's still a decent job if you ask me.

Good post GG. I still dont think some on here recognise the coup this would be if we pull it off. I would take VDV over Silva anyway and for the figures quoted for both its an absolute no contest. He edges it as the better player for me.

The reason why we are getting him for 8 million is completely down to it being last minute - had it not been we would of be paying quite a few million more.

Extremely excited by this and we have always needed a bigger goal return from midfield. I could see VDV doing very well at Spurs, very well.

Now let us pray :santaclaus:

Agreed on the first point, good deadline day, bad transfer window I think.

Based on what exactly? That he's Brazilian? That there is a lot of hype around him? He's not proven anywhere in Europe and jumping from Brazil to England is a major switch. To act like he is going to walk into the club, instantly settle into a completely different culture, and become the best DM we have is very wishful thinking based on absolutely nothing concrete as far as I can tell.

I am not unhappy at all about signing Van der Vaart. He is a top class player who will produce for us. Very thrilled that we were able to take advantage when this offer popped up. However, one move does not a successful transfer window make. We failed to address our biggest needs and a lack of top drawer striker is likely to hurt us more than the addition of a top drawer midfielder.

Like any new signing there is never any guarantees, particularly younger foreign imports but Sandro has been scouted for a long time and has been building quite a reputation for himself. You dont get into the fringes of the Brazial squad at the age of 21 if you dont have something about you.

Palacios has been on the decline for some time now, as much as I like him it is sticking out like a sore thumb. As for Jenas? Well he's still Jenas - on his day he can very useful, but more on often than not it isn't his day really, but to be fair to him he can turn in some solid displays. A good squad player for me though - who knows he aint first choice.

The way things are at the moment I wouldn't be one bit surprised if Sandro eclipses both these players in the not too distant future, maybe not this side of Xmas but sooner rather than later.

Hell it may even get Wilson to focus more and up his game.

In that he's a hard working defensive midfielder who also has good passing range and has already won major club honours in his country. I am under no illusions whatsoever that he will instantly become our greatest midfielder destroyer since that scots bloke from Hearts came down to the Lane, but I think there are alot of pointers to suggest that we have indeed signed a very highly rated young player with more natural talent and composure than Palacios, and with time will prove to be very key.

Or he could be another Kevin Prince Boateng for us. Only we'll be playing him in his correct position.

We havn't failed. If Levy couldn't do a deal that was within the interests of the Club, well that is not failure.

Levy wont deviate from that. We couldn't get the targets we wanted on deals which were feasible - for the Club. There are a lot of variables in play with deals - not to mention an ever changing environment. Levy has the big picture to think about.

Yes it would of been brillant had we got a top class forward in on a deal that was realistic for the Club but it wasn't to be. I dont see that as being a failure, we have just been a tad unlucky.

We need more goals upfront though. We couldn't do it with a striker so we bought a very attacking minded midfielder for an absolute steal - and a world class one as well. Thats a pretty dam good way to make up for the loss of a top notch striker. We have been crying out for more goals from midfield. When you look at the way Gerrard, Lampard and even Fabergas have contrubuted in recent seasons. There practically forward goal stats anyway.

I would hardly call this standing still, we built on last season for sure. Fans wanted a cb and we brought in Gallas. Fantastic buy imo. Gallas is a straight swap on a player who never plays. Why can't Sandro have an impact? Lennon did, Bale did, Hudd is ever improving and if your good enough your old enough.

Very nice player to have? The guy is bordering World class for me, for 8 million that is a deal that only Levy could pull off.

How many of our Midfielders get goals? Or create goals? Only Bale, Niko and Lennon. Hudd hardly scores, Palacios can't pass let alone score and Modric doesn't have a end product. VDV will score you 10 plus goals and even more assists. He can also play at the highest level and change a game with a bit of skill. The guy is the closest thing to Hoddle we have had in yonks. I wouldn't count Modric because he doesn't score or assist.

We tried for a striker, but if your targets aint gonna join what can you do? Buy Charlton Cole?

VDV is world class for me. Ok he only got a chance in the first eleven last season because Kaka got injured, but he played pretty well on most occssions. I mean his Hamburg form was sensational. 83 caps for Holland as well.

This is the biggest signing we have made since Klinsmann IMO. I think we have a few players who are close to world class or just about edging into that bracket. But for me this will be the stand out player on our books, the one world class player we can really boast about it with some conviction - if he settles and plays how we know he can.

Most other fans know it as well, thats why they are envious.

Providing we kick on and keep making progress this signing should lure more world class players to the Lane. This could be the start of it. If we qualify out of the group for the CL, a forward in January could be on the cards. No matter, this is a huge signing for THFC. Fits the profile for a Spurs Legend in the making - and for 8 flipping million.

Thrilled, totally thrilled.

Take a bow Levy.

At first read I want to think that you're overhyping it and getting carried away. But the more I think about it, I can't remember the last time we signed a genuinely major player of the World Cup, and a finalist at that.

Ok, ok. I mean't aside from the RW dynamo that was Ruel Fox, of course.

Didn't Ruel Fox cost us £4m? £4m!! Half a Van Der Vaart! In 1995!! The mind boggles...

From wiki...god we have wasted some money in the past

He did, however, play four times for the Magpies the following season before signing for Tottenham Hotspur on 6 October 1995 in a deal worth £4.25million. He was Tottenham's second most expensively signed player at the time - second only to Chris Armstrong who had joined them for £4.5million a few months earlier.
