He's certainly proved he's nowhere near world class now.
Looked the worst striker at the WC, and that's saying something when N Korea were there.

John Tae Sae... he looked pretty handy him, would probably be dangerous in a decent team!

I read that he plays in the J-League, drives a Hummer, and is the only member of the North Korea squad to own an i-Phone (if indeed any kind of phone!)

Like Ronaldo with Portugal, Rooney is a world class player surrounded by mediocre.

Like Ronaldo with Portugal, Rooney is a world class player surrounded by mediocre.

So being surrounded by mediocre players means Rooney lost the ability to control a ball, pass a ball or make any sort of impression, not in just 1 game, but all 4 of them.
Ronaldo may not have had a great WC, but he didn't look like an imposter every time the ball went to him.

Star players are supposed to stand out and make the difference. Rooney was worse than Heskey.

Too true.
Maradona carried a very ordinary Argentina side to WC glory.

Can you imagine what the english media would do if we ever had a player like Maradona? He would be compared to jesus himself!!!

I think Rooney was demoralised by the ineptitude of the philosophy and the lack of development of the players around him. I still think he was trying to do the right things but struggling for form and help.

Playing with Brazil, Holland, Argies etc. he'd have had people reading him playing him good ball that would quickly play him into form. It was baffling but I don't think he's overated as a world class striker.

And that's coming from someone that thinks the genius has been knocked out of the lad since euro 2004 (where he was utterly sublime) by looking too much at Frank and Gerrard, the two most overated players in the history of football (okay Gerrard is spanking good in a forward central role, but as a midfielder he is outrageously overated).

Ronaldo is a world class player but overated when people compared him to greats. He's not Maradona, Pele, he's not even George Best or Zidane and he's not even Messi, who is trying admirably to get into this bracket.

Ronaldo is too hairbrained to ever be in this class. Portugal do have technical players who can meld a team at this level, but Ronaldo is always playing on his own, even when they were doing well. He never makes the players around him better and he never stands out as a brilliant footballer where it needs finding space from markers, a great football brain or a bit of guile, which is really one of the main hallmarks of the greats.

He is in Argentina mate. He's like Che Guevara over there!

He'd be ruined in the space of 6 months with our media...
