Both have come in for severe criticism but they were exceoptional tonight.
Hutton made some excellent interceptions and was a constant threat going forward. Bentley put in his best performance in a spurs shirt.
The RHS had great balance to it.....and these 2 barely get a look in.

Although I didn't see it, I can see how they would compliment each other. Bentley has the ability to drift around and take up different positions a bit like mod on the left which would leave Hutton with space to run in to, and huttons strenght is to run onto a laid off ball and whip it in or burst into the box him self.
I'm going to take a punt and say if we have to start with Bentley against scum then it might be an idea to put Hutton behind him even though I've not been happy with hutton for a long while . My reason is with bentley. And chorluka there is no pace on that flank and bear in mind the little fat Russain who some how has bundles of pace and a cannon of a shot plays down that side for la shite .

I had big reservations over the signing of Bentley for that price because I didn't think he was really top level, BUT I believe he is a very good player and talented.
I believe the only reason he was been woefully limited and a major flop is because he very much needs a natural full back behind him and not a stop gap but granted very talented player in Corluka (who is really a majestic cm).
A natural full back is much more help going forward and creates more room for the winger to do damage. And it is very pronounced with a winger that doesn't have the pace to create positions to do some damage.
Harry is bloody good but imo there have been some things that he just settled into from the previous regime and didn't question it enough imo. Things like people telling him Boeteng was trouble, Corluka is the right back, end of, Corluka has never played midfield here, Bentley just ain't working etc.
A few things I think should definitely be given a proper run are: Hutton and Bentley, Charlie in midfield, Lennon on the left until Modders is back.

Hutton was excellent, playing like he used to at Rangers. He certainly compliments Bentley much better than Lennon - he seems to stifle Lennon, much the same way as Glen Johnson annoyingly does in an England shirt.

Bentley and Hutton...Charlie and Lennon. Those pairs compliment each other well as one has more pace than the other.
I think we should risk putting Hutton in ahead of Charlie for this one and I would start Bale as well on the back of that performace. There is no point in telling these players to perform and when they do they are still out of the side. I think Bale's pace and ability to deliver a ball will be much needed against the Goons, Niko has a great delivery but lacks real pace...I would go for Bale.

I don't really see that to be honest. Lennon has been scintillating in an England shirt with natural full backs behind him. Helps him and any winger imo, but especially ones that have trouble creating room for themselves, like Bentley.
Just because they go beyond them and take some of the burden and the glory of attacking the full back doesn't mean they are stifling them. Overall the threat is greater and you take more territory and other spaces, more space opens up to the winger. In Lennon's case probably slightly less often but when it does it will open up like when Moses split the nile and then he will crush them devastatingly. In Bentley's case he will get pockets of space deeper from an overlapping full back and will get room to cross effectively, which is his strength.
When Lennon plays for England and when he first started for spurs he had natural full backs behind him and was opening things up as well or better than he does now. What he has improved is his final product, which has nothing to do with what's behind him.

Great foolishness to base any selections for Arsenal on the back of a CC win at home against a depleted Everton in the midst of a bad run.

That is true but even still I stand by those selections. With Lennon and Defoe out of the side we lack serious pace. Ok maybe sticking with Charlie as he can be depended on, and I rate him highly as RB. Hutton still lacks defensive composure but his pace to support Bentley could be a big plus. Its not that we beat a side going through a bad spell and conjested fixture list, I am thinking of what we are missing given injuries and suspensions.

Harry on Bentley and Hutton
"I thought he (Bentley) started well tonight I was so pleased with his performance, that's what we want from David Bentley. That's the David Bentley I used to watch play for Blackburn and the kid I saw play at arsenal that went to norwich and followed his career. That's the type of performances he put in and paid the amout of money they paid for him. When he plays like that he's a top class player.
We had a balance tonight, you know David needs people to run and Alan Hutton playing behind him tonight got forward all the time and gave him that support and kept getting on the overlap getting up and palying with him. Together they played ever so well"
