View Full Version : Tottenham's style of play

Jol's Yid Army

I like the big man Martin Jol, I believe he is the right man for the job and is the best coach / manager since El Tel. When he was appointed last season he said he liked to play attacking football with wingers and he was true to his word as we stuffed Southampton and Everton 5-1.

I’ve only been to a handful of games at W.H.L. this season but I have seen all of the SKY games. It seems to me that MJ has gone back on his word because the team seems to have very cautious style of play and a narrow midfield with Davids, Carrick, Jenas and Tainio. Granted MJ has started to involve Lennon (fantastic talent) which is great but the side still seems to be unbalanced.

In regards to the cautious style when I watched the home games against Wigan, Blackburn and West Brom we were very lucky to come away with 7 points. If it wasn’t for the brilliant Robbie Keane we may have come away from these games without anything. It seems to me that Tottenham invite pressure on to themselves and only start to play / attack once their one down.

Don’t get me wrong our home record speaks for it self, the league position doesn’t lie and it has been a great season what ever the final outcome.

What I’d like to know is other fans opinions about how spurs play, if you agree or disagree with what I have said.

i dont think we are more cautious, if anything the opposite. i think the introduction of Lee at left back ha smade us better going forward and davids on the left is purely as he can cover Lee's ass when he doesnt get back. i was actually at the west brom game and i think jol taking off kelly for mido and putting jenas at right back and keane on the wing was a stroke of genius which was very attacking and helped us to victory

As highlander said, both Lee and Stalteri seemed to have been signed as attacking full backs, which would imply that we're attempting to attack more. Doesn't necessarily mean it works like that on the pitch, but thats the intention, hence Lee always being up and Stalteri scoring the other day.

i think he's been smart with how he's started at spurs. If you look at the number of new and young players coming in, it would have been asking for trouble to just try and play football the spurs way. We've seen a few confidence problems in the side after the odd bad result, and he's taken all that into account and set up a strong defence, who rarely let each other down it has to be said, and a combative midfield. We've then punted the ball up field and forced teams to try and break us down as a team defensive unit, which is tough.

I think you'll see a lot more sides try it next year, especially at the start of the season. He's built a solid foundation for this season and it's kept our confidence up just, as i don't thinnk we've played well often. I do think it lacks a little tactical creativity, and we're certainly unbalanced without a left winger. However i suppose the best way for the players to learn to play is as part of a strong defensive unit, and then build on the flair and attacking as you learn to play together. The fact that we don't attack enough does make teams brave against us, but i think we need to take small steps and see what the team can do one season at a time. Hopefully we'll have a lot more games next season, with a better balanced side, and the experience of 2 legged matches will also forge the team together.
If we are at liverpools level in a couple of years then i will be happy.

We've gotta let the progression take its course and allow MJ to mould the team he wants, which isnt quite ready yet. Ironically you could quote the lager advert with the dutch fella (cant remember the lager)..."schtop, it isnt ready yet".

Next season we will be in europe and the team will make another step up.

Within three seasons we've gone from relegation threatened to mid-table to top5.

With a few more players this summer, including a left-sided version of lennon (ribery/wilhelmsson/pederson/arango???) and the strengthening of central defense and attack, we'll probably see more of what MJ initially promised.

The foundations have been laid and the team have the work ethic and defensive discipline that can be worked on and improved with the addition of more attacking outlets and options in the final third.

The Jol revolution is on spurs fans, hold onto your cocks...TUT, i meant as in cockerels ya dirty buggers!!!

Hopefully 'the revolution' finishes phase one this season.

i don't remember feeling as confident in a manager as i have with MJ

but saying that

as for play , what i'd like to see improve is that when we are pegged back we don't exactly seem coiled to spring forward given the opertunity, there seems to be a kind of wind up pause as we regain possesion, unless a long ball is played well. the players do seem to know were they wanna get to to be in good offensive positions but they get to those positions via positions not being open for a pass, limiting options for a fast free flowing counter and being a bit too easy to track. i'd like to see more creative movment off the ball while the oposition is on the back foot.

We have had a great season with players who have not played together a lot and are still learning, the signing of Davids was a master stroke and has helped the young players mature faster. We have a lot of young English players who will get better the more they play together but have not been in many pressure situations before, hence our nervous play at the moment. I have been supporting Spurs all my life and have seen many trophys won and I believe we are on the road to win more, Jol is the best manager we have had since Burkinshaw and with the backing of the board, players and fans will bring the Glory days back to our GREAT club.
