How have they managed to turn an exciting event ( like European football )
into a yawnfest like the CL group stages ?
And then they go one better with the Europa Cup. Tune in to the Villa game now on CH5, all the Villa fans have come dressed as seats.
Pathetic.

Probably dancing in the streets of Birmingam tonight, as they're out of that Micky mouse, Euro disney europa cup league thingy.
Now they can concentrate on league placings.
Which is unfortunate for us maybe, and not what EUFA had in mind when devising this shit competition.

All this new format is doing is handicapping teams with aspirations of trying to get a CL place, bogging them down with fixtures.

Spot on mate.
I bet all the big teams in Europe, particularly over here, had a big say in the format.
And I wish someone could explain how clubs actually make money in playing the Doggio and Duckio when Sky aren't interested, and CH5 probably pay about 20 quid for the TV rights.

When I realised they were adding even more shit games to the new europa version I said the end of the last season I hoped we finished 8th and didn't apply for the intertoto, and that's what happened and I'm glad.

It's a distration, a shit event until the last 8 and it's FOURTEEN games before you get to where it starts properly. It's not disrespectful to our traditions to not want to be in it. It's not the same as before, that competition is dead basically, unless you sacriface a chance at the top four places to win it and that's not worth it considering you will probably be back in the 18 game slog (14 of which are meaningless) or worse.

There's just a huge gap between the two euro leagues in money, prestige and I mean how many teams must be in europe these days? It's crazy.

Change it to prelimes and get rid of the muck and then add in the good sides at an appropriate stage, simple. Then at least have something that is worth more than the hassle. And let the winner play in the cl if you want to make that the prize piece (which is how they have made it).

In the champions league they clear away the dross first so it can be a proper event. I don't see why they want to turn the other one into almost another league season and not even a good one, it's like the spl.

Joke.

The way it is now you are definitely better off not in it so you can concentrate on closing the gap on the big teams and get into the money pot or long term it just gets harder to break the hold at the top end.

Ironically, they are the only teams that can really sustain a challenge on four fronts as well because they have the cl money to do it.

I never saw what was wrong with the old 3 European competition set up anyway. Why must people always be changing things for the sake of it? Bastards!

Why? Because people in UEFA sit in rooms and say words like 'exciting', 'invigorate', 'refresh'. What they forget is there is nothing more exciting than a straight 2 legged knock-out. Nothing needed to be changed, there was never a need for a league system at the beginning.

I have an image of a board room scene akin to the itchy and scratchy episode of the simpsons:

"Excuse me, but, "proactive" and "paradigm?" Aren't those just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.
(Silent pause in the room.)
I'm fired, aren't I?"

Everything is about the money and greed of the Champions League now, the UEFA Cup used to be a decent competition before we started handing Champions League spots to 4th placed teams.

Simples, more game more revenue. Greed.

That is true for the CL but not for the europa league which is a complete joke.

Ask yourself the question why are english clubs rubbish in the second tier european competition.

The answer is teams like villa are actually secretly pleased to get knocked out. 20 odd matches is a complete joke.

There is no glory glory nights like in 84 it was a respected competition now its on channel 5 and hardly anyone watches it. 3

I'd rather win the carling cup than the europa league. Winning the uefa cup in 84 really meant something now uefa have destroyed a great competition.
